Baylor Scott & White Weight Loss Surgery Program Bariatric Center

My first impression of Dr. Provost was that he reminded me of Dana Carvey a little. He was pleasant, caring, and confident. He does give little eye contact, as I've read others mention about him. Aftercare and exercise were both emphasized a great deal- he wants a lifetime commitment to both. He was a bit pressed for time as he was running late, but he did let me skim through my list to see if there was anything he did not cover. He also apologized and assured me that I would get all my questions answered.. later.
His staff was terrific! David (insurance guy) was surprisingly friendly and funny, much different than I expected after our few phone conversations. Lois (nurse) and Michelle (dietician) were both warm, helpful, and friendly, as well. After a 10 month wait, my consultation with Dr. Provost yesterday was better than I hoped it would be!
Dr.Provost is one the greatest doctors Dallas has. He is a very caring person and truly wants his patients to do well. I can't say how comfortable I feel having him do my surgery. His waiting list is very long but well worth it. His nurse Lois Hill is great as well. A very busy person but shows much concern. His insurance guy David, on the other hand is jerk. I think he gets something out of telling people that they were not approved. But again Dr.Provost is well worth it.
I went to one of the seminars that he does. He was very informative and lighthearted. I liked that because it made him seem just like a regular guy that you could talk to and joke with. He explained both the Lap Band and RNY in detail including what would happen prior, during, and after surgery. He reviewed all the risks that this surgery could have. He answered any questions I had in my mind and one very important one. What was his death rate to date? He said it was 5%. That seems very high to me but then he explained that he takes cases from all over the USA that other doctors refuse due to the patient being a very high surgical risk. That explains away the high death rate sufficiently enough for me. He does have an aftercare program and monthly support meetings. I am looking forward to my consult with him and hope it will be soon.
My first impression of Dr. P was great he listened and answered all my questions the only thing was it takes a long time to get an apppt. The office staff is so nice and helpful. My appt was 11-14-02 insurance approved me 12-18-02 but I have to wait till March to have my surergy cause he is so booked up.I will let ya'll know more on March 10 I go for my pre-op testing
My first impression of Dr.Provost was that he was a very laid back individual, also just plain down to earth good old guy very easy to talk to. I really loved it when he came into the room to talk to me my first visit and propped his boots up on the stool and sat on the counter and was not intimidating at all. Really seemed like he cared about me and wanted to hear from me any fears I had and what I expected out of the surgery. Of course anyone would think their Doctor is the best in the world when he or she saves your life but I know my Doctor is the greatest and I can't begin to tell how much I truly appreciate what he has done for me. I had given up on living and was just expecting to die at any time as I had already had several heart episodes and was in a wheel chair as I could not walk from the front door to his office without being totally exhausted. When he told me that I have to come back for checkups for the rest of my life I felt great no problem at least now I have a life. Well gotta go for now as I have dance lessons tonight and going to play golf tomorrow with friends right after I go hang gliding and before I actually can fit into the seats on the plane when I fly to Cancun next month. LOL Life is great!!!!!!!!!
the dr was a cutie pie...that's my fav way to assess how good he might be...i had read here that he did not look folks in the eye, but i didn't have that issue...he was nice enough...his "speech" seemed a little canned, but when i asked quesitons, he seemed more presonable...i guess that's just one of the drawbacks of doing this thing a co-zillion times and anticipating what the person will ask...*****the office staff was quite stoic, but the folks behind the doors were all kind...they were easygoing and were eager to answer any questions that i had...all of them gave me time to formulate my questions...i didn't feel rushed at all..i was quite impressed...****they talked to me about prepping for the surgery, insurance concerns, pre-op visits, after-care, diet and lifestyle change...****he addressed the
He was very nice and I am looking forward to working with him in the future as I go on my weight loss journey. I met him at his support group meeting for pre and post op folks. I attended three of these meetings while I was still living in Dallas about a year ago. Now I am finally scheduled for 2-13-02 and I am very excited to start my new life on "the other side". His staff was very nice and helpful and worked quickly to give me a surgery date when I went in for the consult. I can't think of anything I least like about Dr. Provost, but I guess I should hold off on that until after the surgery!?..
He emphasized aftercare more than anything else. He made sure I understand that this is a lifetime commitment and I can't just do it "whenever I feel like it" or I will die! I am ready to make this commitment and am looking forward to my pre op appointment on February 7 at Parkland. I will be attending his support group once a month and going to support group meetings in my area in between. All of the risks of surgery were addressed during my consult. I would rate him a 10. As far as surgical competence vs. bedside manner, I would go for surgical competence any day. But again, I will have to wait till after 2-13 to address that.
I am having my surgery with Dr. Provost. I was told by my primary care doctor at the VA Medical Center that he was a very good doctor and had performed lots of lap surgeries. My consult with him is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2003. I went to three of his new patient support groups and met quite a few of the folks he has done the surgery for and they were "walking miracles" to me. His support group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, one time for pre ops and one time for post ops, but everyone is welcome at both. It was great to be able to meet the doctor and talk with so many people who had the surgery and were so happy! He explained the surgery and the risks very well and answered lots of questions everyone had about the surgery - before and after.
What completely put my mind at ease with moving ahead with this surgery is the fact that Dr. Provost was confident and self-assured. He covered the risks first, describing all that is done pre-op, during surgery, and post-op, to dramatically reduce the chance of complications. The one thing he did say that made an important impression on me was that all risks are preventable. He knows the risks and having done many, many surgeries, prevention is first in his eyes. No surgery is without risks. As for the benefits, because of all the rewiring that takes place, I asked him what kind of life/health I could expect at the ages of 60, 70, or 80 if I have this surgery. His answer to me was, "great health!" It made sense to me when you figure that your health deteriorates faster when you grow into those years especially with a lot of extra weight.
As far as his office staff goes, his nurse, Lois Hill is really awesome, yet very professional. His insurance processor, David Morris, was very thorough and did admit that they were at least 2 weeks behind in processing the insurance paperwork. This could frustrate some people but I realized early on in my research that 'patience' is a must. It took me about 9 mths. to get my initial consultation. I am driving 6 hours to have this surgery. Dr. Provost was fine with the fact that I do/will attend a support group in my city and wants to make certain that I also have an aftercare dr. I have emailed/spoken to some of his patients. Most have had great results and very few developed complications, yet they ALL say the same thing; "Dr. Provost is the Best!"
