Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group, Inc. Bariatric Center
Dr.Zorn will by my surgeon. I met with him on March 6,2002. My appt was at 3:15 pm & got in pretty much right away. He explained the surgery to me & where the scar will be. Anwserd all my questions & I was very happy with him. The office staff was very nice. I had someone who weighed me at the beginning & she had someone else's height & weight info in the scale. But that was the only problem I had. The dr stressed how important it is to follow the aftercare program to get the best results because the surgery is only a tool to help you lose the weight. If you continue to eat the way you used to, you wont lose the weight. I have weighed the benefits & the risks. And there is nobody going to stop me from having this surgery. It's going to give me my life back.
Dr. Rumsey was all business. Afer my exam,
we then sat down and went over the proceure,
what to expect after surgery, my hospital
stay and also the risk that are involved. He
was patient and answered all my questions. I
had spent a year researching, however there
were some things that I needed clarifaction
on. I must of called the office a hundered
times, and each time everyone was polite and
eager to help me. I feel blessed to have the
opportunity to have this surgery at Pacific
Bariatrics in San Diego, they have an
experienced group of surgeons that stress
aftercare.
Dr. Rumsey walked in smiling as looked me in the eye and extended his arm for a handshake. He made a customary greeting and we exchanged polite conversation. I was sitting on the exam table with a large blue paper gown on with nothing underneath. He examined me around my stomach and liver areas and listened to my lungs. After the exam he left briefly so I could dress. That was a nice and respectful detail that I liked; it is easier to talk and focus on the conversation when I am dressed. Then he came back in and discussed the surgery in detail. Dr. Rumsey stated that with my symptoms that surgery is needed. He considers me a higher risk patient and requested that I replace two of my meals with Pro-Complex. He said that the protein meal replacements will help my muscles and it should allow me to lose about 20 pounds before surgery. He also said that having the protein drink as a meal is filling. He said my blood sugars are all over the place and I am at risk to develop diabetes. He also suggested walking as much as possible because he is concerned that about me getting blood clots. He advised me that anytime that I am sitting over an hour and my legs are bent then there is a greater chance for me to get a blood clot. I don’t have good circulation and I do get numbness a lot. He compared the risk of surgery versus doing nothing…and he said for me doing nothing is a greater risk and that is why the surgery is indicated. He said since I was over 40 years old I was past due for a mammogram and suggested that I get that done as well as a pap smear. He asked me to give his office three weeks that way they can get the chart organized and then they will call me(I think with a surgery date). At that time I should mention to the girls that I would like to be on the cancellation list. He asked me to call and leave a message for him in one month to let him know any progress that I have made in my weight loss. If I have gained any extra weight then he may consider delaying the surgery. (I can make sure that I don’t gain any extra weight, but normally I don’t lose a lot of weight and that concerns me. But as long as I don’t gain I’ll be okay. I’ve been on the semi-liquid diet for two days and I am Hungry. I’ve been doing a lot of water loading, but I’m still having stomach rumblings and feeling shaky.) Anyway, at the end of the discussion, he wished me good luck and said he will see me at Mercy Hospital.
I remember him saying that PB only had 6 deaths and 7 leaks in 5000 operations, 2% blood clot complications, and all the other complications are less than 1%. I really felt very comfortable with him and look forward to having him perform my surgery.
I had a good feeling about Dr. Zorn right from the start. He sat down and took his time with me. I didn't feel rushed, and he answered all of my questions. Before I went to Pacific Bariatric, I read many comments and selected Dr. Zorn based on my research. I definitely made the right choice. Many people have criticized his office staff, but I have always been treated professionally and with courtesy when I'm there.

Dr. Zorn was very clear in outlining all of the risks of surgery. He also went into great detail about aftercare and what I would need to do to maximize my weight loss. I felt much better about the surgery after I left his office.
Dr. Zorn is the best. He's like a nice grandpa. He's really busy and has alot of patients, so the personalization wasn't there.
His office, Hillcrest Surgical Medical Group, is very busy and crowded. Expect delays when going for check ups.
What I like least about his is how busy he is and how hard it is to get an appointment to see him.
Dr. Zorn really stresses aftercare and has a planned structure of post-op appointments. He also has a guide for week by week what to add to your diet and what to stay away from.
Dr. Zorn didn't really talk about the risks of this surgery with me before hand. I had already educated myself about the risks. The medical group he is with addresses the risk of surgery in an informative intro to WLS session that is required before the surgery.
I would say that he is an 8 out of 10. A little more personal care would have been nice. I never really saw him till day 3 post op when I asked him if I could go home yet.
His surgical competence is the better part of him. He has performed this same procedure thousands of times.
My first impression of Dr. Zorn was that he was knowledgable and to the point. He didn't sugar coat things. My impression hasn't changed..I still look for him instead of his colleagues to answer my questions. The office staff at Pacific Bariatric is fine, not over friendly, but not snobbish either. What did I like least about Dr. Zorn...he is always behind in his appointments, but then, that is also a good thing...he is answering someones questions and easing fears. He has his patients see him at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. He is fairly insistent on this, but then, I haven't tried not to see him, after all, he is the one that is knowledgable. He addressed the risks of surgery fairly well. I think he is a Dr. that expects his patients to do their own research as well. I thought he was a great Dr. I am quite pleased with my surgery and the aftercare I have had. If you are looking for a Dr. to baby you, you might want to choose someone else...he is very no nonsense. You have to do this, you didn't go through major surgery to have someone hold your hand. But if something seriously scares you, he will ease your concerns.
Dr. Eugene Rumsey at Pacific Bariatric Group was one of the nicest men I have ever met. He was very encouraging and explained what he was going to do during my surgery in detail. Everyone at the group was extremely sensitive to overweight people and very nice.
I appreciated Dr. Rumsey being as detailed as he was. He asked me if I had any questions for him and did not seem rushed at all.
He did emphasize what I would need to do in order for my surgery to work well. He did emphasize exercise/water.
He went over every risk of surgery in detail. I would rate Dr. Rumsey a 10 in my book. In fact, the entire hospital staff was a 10!
Dr. Rumsey, at Pacific Bariatrics in San Diego,
Ca. is one of the best doctors I have ever been
to. At my first pre-op visit he took his time to
explain the open RNY to me and my husband.
He explained every detail and was very honest
about the outcome and possible complications
of this complex surgery. We were allowed to
ask all the questions we wanted to without a
time restriction. His aftercare is very good too.
I developed a problem and he is making sure
that I get all the proper care that I require, even
coordinating with my HMO (Kaiser) for aftercare.
I rate this Dr. as a 9+ (no one is perfect!)
His front office staff could use some classes in customer
service. It is very difficult to get to talk
to anyone. The front office staff seems to
be extremely busy and overwhelemed. Once
you do get past the people that answer the
phone and get connected to the case workers
the whole thing reverses! They are so patient
and nice. I had Myla as my case worker and
I could not have asked for a better, friendlier
person. The nurses are the GREATEST!! I have
not met one that I did not like and thought
was extremely knowledgeable.
Sometimes the wait for your appointment
is a little long. They have a sign in the
waiting room that states that your wait may
be long because of the care they are giving
another patient, but remember that the care
you will get will be just as good. I will
wait for good care anytime and good care is
what you will get from Dr. Rumsey. I would
recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Rumsey was very kind. He described how exactly my surgery would take place, did a brief physical and asked me some questions about my medical history. He was very professional and answered all of my questions..even the stupid ones (smile).
The Pacific Bariatric staff was also very nice and professional.
