Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group, Inc. Bariatric Center
Dr Zorn is a very personable and thorough surgeon. At the hosipital the nurses kept teling me they thought I had one of the best surgeons for this type surgey. Since I live about 3 hours from San Diego he has bent over backwards to do my check ups at a closer location before they do thier meetings. One of the things I really like about him was his understanding that I wanted to go back to work after two weeks. He said if you have an office job and will promise to go home if you feel overtired, go ahead
Dr. Zorn was very nice. The first time I met him was back in September of 2002. The first appointment went very smoothly. He was running a bit late but I didn't have to wait that long. He answered all of my husband's questions and the one or two that I had left. He did give remind me of the risks but was very positive about the surgery.
As for the office staff, some of them seemed to busy to deal with you but others were great. For instance Myla, she was the kaiser processor and she was there whenever I had a question. If she didn't have an answer she would get it for me.
Surgery was 01-06-03 and all went well. Dr. Zorn came in to check on me a couple of times. All went well, he was great and I would recommend him to a friend or family member.
Dr. Rumsey was very nice and extremely informative and has a good bedside manner about him. The internist and phych staff and the office staff were wonderful, very inviting and friendly. Dr Rumsey did address all of the aftercare and risks of surgery. I have been to two of the seminars in Walnut Creek given by the Pacific Bariatrics group Dr's Tanaka and Zorn which were very informative and everything Dr. Rumsey went over with me re-inforced everything I already had read and heard in the seminars. If I had to rate on a 1-10 scale 10 being the best he would get a 8. Of course I will re-evaluate this score once I actually have the surgery (I'm sure it will be a 10) :) Thank you Dr. Rumsey!
I was concerned about using Pacific Bariatric, my experience with what I perceived as the basic incompetence of the front office made me very leary the guy behind the knife would be a brainless twit too.
However, after meeting Dr. Zorn (I watched to see if he washed his hands before my exam, and he did) some of my fears were removed.
He is very calm and quiet, gentle during exam and open about answering my questions including # procedures he's done, # of bad outcomes (death rate) that there would be no trainees for my surgery (anesthesia, arterial blood gas etc).
He spent an hour with me, all after 5pm. (Visit was scheduled for 2:30 but his internist was delayed by 2 hours, forcing Zorn to stay after hours.) He didn't rush me to get out of the office so that he could too)
Choosing a surgeon is rather like playing the lottery, there really isn't anyway you can know anything about his/her actual competence unless your in the medical field yourself.
The literature this office has is wonderful, including nutritional support for pre and post op, much better than Kaiser.
My impression of Dr. Rumsey, was that he seemed very nice. He was also very caring and was able to answer all my questions. He asked me if I was there alone, and I told him my mom was with me so called her in and explained the surgery to her. He also answered all her questions. He told me I have to loose 25 pounds before the surgery. He talked to me about the risk of the surgery, and made sure that I understood what it involved.
Dr. Eugene Rumsey was wonderful, extremely competent and I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to perform the surgery.
He is a part of Pacific Bariatrics in San Diego. They are very prepared to work with the special needs of bariatric patients and they are extremely friendly, cooperative and always there to answer any questions.
If you have an opportunity to have Dr. Rumsey as you surgeon you should definitely go with him!
