Highland Hospital Bariatrics Bariatric Center
Dr. Omalley has a dry sense of humor he can come off with not the best bedside manner. He is an excellent surgeon though and the Obesity clinic at Highland hospital is out of this world!rnI had a wonderful journey with the nutritionists, psychologists, nurses and support staff. I think they did a great job educating about the surgery and especially the nutrition needs after you make it through the surgery.rnThey took care of all the paperwork needed with the insurance, I had absolutely no need to do anything with paperwork once I had visited my primary doctor at the beginning to have them write the initial referral letter.rnI even had put off having my gallbladder taken care of as they were planning on taking it with my Gastric surgery, but it decided it couldn't wait two more weeks, a fellow surgeon, Dr, Johnston did that surgery and did a great job and was very wonderful in explaining everything and answering any questions I had.rnOverall I think that I had a great experience, and if there were any complications I would not hesitate to go right back to Dr. OMalley. His staff is great, the Nurse practitioner that I saw on my follow up appt. was very nice, took her time and answered all questions I had!rn

Dr. O'Malley is very bussiness-like. He doesn't spend a lot of time hand-holding or making you feel comfortable with him. It is apparent when you meet him that he knows what he is doing and is more than competent in the Bariatric field. But, if you are looking for a surgeon with a big personality who will spend time chatting with you and comforting you, he isn't it. He is in high demand and is in surgery constantly, therefore, has no time to spend forever with his patients. He absolutely made me feel like I was making the right choice in going with him based on his experience in the field, and I have no regrets in going with him. My experience with the Bariatric team has been nothing but positive and my experience post-surgery so far has been nothing but positive. The only criticism I have is that I have had to wait for long periods of time (upwards of an hour) past my scheduled appointment time.
Met him breifly at the first seminar that I went to months ago. seemed very caring and informed about all of our concerns. He took the time to speak to the group and to individuals to answer any questions. All the staff that I have had contact with so far have been wonderful. They work together as a team there at Highland Hospital in Rochester. I have a appointment to talk to Dr. Johnson on the 16th of June after that meeting I should be scheduled for surgery. I will know more after that date.
One thing I guess I should not do (and please take my advice if you haven't met Dr. O yet) is listen to others opinions of him. Sure at the seminar he is right to the point, doesn't want people to jump around with questions (just wait until he gets on the topic or ask when he is done), and tells it like it is. If you can't handle this, get someone else! When I had my one on one my appointment was at a certain time and I DIDN'T HE DIDN'T COME INTO THE ROOM UNTIL 2.5 HOURS LATER!!! I'm sure it wasn't his fault but come on office staff couldn't you have called me and told me he is running late? My husband took off from work and wasn't even able to meet him because he had to be back to work. You know office staff, other people do have lives PLUS in seminar we were told IF YOU ARE LATE FOR ANY OF YOUR APPOINTMENTS THEY WILL BE CANCELED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE THEM. Anyway, Dr. O and I were joking around. I didn't find to be stuffy. Also, when he came to see me in the hospital he was joking around again. I guess if you joke with him he will do the same. rnrnI think the office staff (dieticians, secretaries, etc) shouldn't threaten unless they are also perfect. rnrnI would rate Dr. O a 10 out of 10. Hey, no complaints about his capabilities when he is the TOPS!

My 1st impression of my doctor was that he was very educated in the feild of wls and that he really knew his stuff. He is very technical in the way he delivers information to you which to me is fine but to some it might be slightly confussing if they have not reserched anything about wls. I have only met him once so i will update my after thoughts of him later. The staff at highland hospital is nice and polite, i like the fact that they meet with you in a seminar before you even start the wls program. Also there is a nurse how has had the surgery on his team. I guess the only thing i did not like was he did not have a really upbeat personality but that is not what i am paying for LOL. Future patients should know that they have to go through a structured program before they can have surgery that can take up to 6 months. Dr. O'Malley strongly emphasized aftercare to ensure a succesful wls. There is a great aftercare program at highland hospital. The doctor told me all the risks involved in the seminar that i had to go to before i started the wls program he was very forthcoming. I do not know how i would rate him yet because i have only met him once so i will update that in the future. I think that bedside manner and surgical competence are very important.
I was a bit apprehensive before meeting Dr. O'Malley as I had read that he is a no nonsense, abrupt type of person. I was delighted when he was so helpful, patient and really took time to answer questions during the seminar. I can't wait until I get to meet with him prior to surgery because that will mean I am one step to getting this done!
overall opinion, great pre-op, good surgery stay...nice guy....... not so happy with the aftercare. I stopped going to the office or calling when i couldnt see him for aftercare, i was not happy with seeing a nurse only.rnjust my personal opinion though. rnI would and have recommended him to others cause he is great at what he does... just office and aftercare back in 2004 wasnt up to my satisfaction... very well may be different now that was a long time ago.
