Highland Hospital Bariatrics Bariatric Center
I was approved by OHIP on October 13th and was fortunate enough to get into the October 20th Bariatric Seminar hosted by Dr. O'Malley. My first impression was that he is very knowledgable of both the surgical procedure and the necessary after-care lifestyle changes. My personal meeting with him was short, but understandably so, as there were 12 other patients waiting for one-on-one consultations that afternoon. He was to-the-point and I was satisfied in the level of confidence he instilled in me.
His office staff and the Highland Hospital facility were great. I have been back for my pre-ops and my surgery date is coming soon .... December 15, 2004. Wooo Hooo
I was very impressed @ the first meeting.
I was even more impressed over time and greatful for his talent and very happy that I found him.
The office staff has always been patient, helpful, and very informative.
The waiting period for the inital group meeting was 9 months and the surgery 4 months after that. Too long of a wait.
He is very knowledgable and able to present all the technical and complicated terms simply and easy to understand.
Dr. O'Malley and his staff are very strict about pre and aftercare.
Aftercare is very structured with written instructions and follow ups.
All the risks of surgery were openly discussed in detail, and were included with my paperwork.
I would rate him as excellent, and I'd recommend him to anybody that is intersted and serious about this surgery. He is a Genious.
His bedside manner and surgical competance are great.
From the first time I met Dr. O'Malley I was very impressed. During both his general information session and my initial consultation he was very thorough explaining all aspects of the surgery, recovery and risks.
His staff are extremely competent & helpful. Diane Loper, his office manager, took care of everything ahead of time for me.
Because I travelled from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Rochester NY for the surgery most of my post op followup has been done by phone with his nurse practioner Kim. She is excellent.
Dr. O'Malley is very professional, has a well set up program, valuable information, and he and his staff are very knowledgeable and a great resource. I feel the only thing that would improve services to clients would be better information regarding diets for people who have food allergies.
His program is very selective and provides as much support as anyone wants to take advantage of.
The hospital experience was pleasant, suggestions were appreciated and everyone helpful and friendly, very compassionate.
Patients are encouraged to join support groups, given lists, are checked regularly and have access to his staff with a good turn around time.
Dr. O'Malley spends approximately 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours with you prior to agreeing to do the surgery He requires a Psychiatrist consult (his choice of doctors) which took me 1.5 hours.
I would definitely rate him to be top notch. He is personable, talented, a highly competent surgeon, easy to talk with and I would choose him over anyone else out there.
On a rating scale one being lowest and 10 highest he and his program rank a 10+.
My first impression of Dr. O'Malley was he is young and good looking. He is fantastic! He is very quick but thorough. He listens and provides detailed answers and sometimes explains too much if that's possible.
The staff at first seems gruff, but I warmed up to them over time. It seems as though they are overworked or need a vacation. After all he was on Oprah! I guess he is a little busier now :)
I was recovering when I saw him on the show. What a rush! My doctor on Oprah... Alright you go Doc O'Malley!!
Dr. O'Malley does not have the best bedside manner but he is a great surgeon. Maybe he doens't need to have compassion. I thought he could have been a little more talkative when we checks on you after the surgery.
I actually had to go in for another surgery and he seemed much better this time (August 2004). The surgery was due to the permanent sutures coming apart and my intestines went where they shouldn't have been. I felt pretty lousy and couldn't eat or drink much at all. He shook his finger at me for missing an appointment but took care of me like a caring, concerned physician.
I wish they encouraged a support group after the surgery. I am now finding that I want to be involved in a support group and came across this site. Now I know there is a support group right in my back yard!
Dr. O'Malley is a great surgeon and I believe a great person. He is truly conerned with helping us "fatties". While most doctors look at us like we have three heads he doesn't bat an eye at the extremely large patients in his waiting room.
Not once did he make suggestions of trying to diet or try this diet pill or just push away from the table. He knew that I was at my witts end and wanted to help. I thank him for that. He never judges. He never puts a number on how much one should lose. He says everyone is different. I am glad that he did it this way because I probably would have been obsessed with the "number" and not how I feel.
I feel awesome and my 7 year old daughter says I look cool in my new clothes. We all know how fashionable the larger clothes are (tee hee). She is very proud of me and so is my husband. Neither of which have a weight problem.
Dr. O'Malley is a 9 1/2 in my book. Just a little nicer to us after surgery and I am sure he will be a 10. Yes he is that perfect! I would recommend anyone considering this to have him as their surgeon.
