Heathcliff Quioco, M.D. Bariatric Center
Dr. Q is very professional, very straight-forward. He doesn't candycoat the risks of surgery and emphasizes that this surgery is the LAST resort for weight loss. Overall I've been impressed with him and his office staff and I feel like I'm in good hands.
I didn't so much care for the fact that the office staff sets up your appointments and then calls to tell you when they are, but on the initial consultation I was asked if there were any dates I was not available. The inconvenience is offset by Dr. Q's "bedside" manner because even though he is reserved and always in "doctor" mode, I felt more comfortable with him than more chatty physicians. Never at any time did I feel rushed in his office and he always seemed to be looking to answer any question I might have.
My first impression of Dr Quioco was that he was a quiet reserved man. On my initial consultation, he did not rush me, sat patiently through my barage of questions, answered them all, and was upfront and honest in his response. He had me come to a second consultation with my "support person" (my husband) and discussed with both of us the life changing event that we were about to undertake. We had my 18 month old daughter with us...and he didn't mind one bit her playing with his golf balls...After this second consultation, I had to have a GB ultrasound, EGD, and psych eval. These are required by him...not my insurance. At my pre-op work up at the hospital, they did a EKG, labs, and a dietician consulted me on the post-op diet. As far as aftercare, what I know of now (I am pre-op still) you have multiple visits with him at varied times in your post op life, the diet he will consult you on, you can use the Bariatric Center here (which is basically Medifast) if you want. At this point I would reccommend him. This process has moved very quickly since the time I called to make the appt...to surgery date...We are at roughly two months.
At my last appt with him prior to surgery...he looked me straight in the eyes and said are you sure that you want this surgery...you know that you could die from it...I told him that I was aware of all the risk...I am ready to make a change now to have a longer, healthier life with my family...
His office staff is great and worked out all the details and took care of all my insurance in one week I was approved and set up for everthing needed to get the surgery taken care of before year-end. I think Dr. Quioco will take good care of me. He takes this surgery very seriously and wants to make sure that I understand it. It lets me know that he is a very good and thorough surgeon, I couldn't ask for more than that.
As a nurse on the unit where Dr. Quioco's post gastric bypass patient's come after surgery, I am able to see first-hand how his patient's progress after surgery. My first impression of Dr. Quioco was that he takes a profound interest in his patients. He treats each and everyone as an individual. He takes time to discuss any problems that may arise at great length and lets the patients know ahead of time any risks or complications that may occur. I found my self treated this same way before, during and after my surgery.
His office staff has been absolutely excellent. Charline is wonderful working closely with the insurances and I have never called regarding an issue that I did not get the answer right away or a call-back from her or Dr. Quioco within a few hours.
Dr. Quioco and his staff are tops in the field of obesity and the gastric bypass. I highly recommend Dr. Quioco for his surgical competence and bedside manner.
He has a pretty structured aftercare seeing his patients through the Bariatric Center which offers several options for the postop bypass patients to choose.
I liked him, you could tell he takes this surgery very seriously.
He became more personable each time i met with him.
They are nice.
Nothing.
That he makes sure you are doing this for all the right reasons.
A lot, the surgery is a tool but you have to do a lot of the work.
Yes, reccomends support groups and healthy eating.
Very serious risks were explained in detail.
Very good.
Surgical competence is exellent and his bed side manner improved after surgery.
<center>My 1st impression of Dr Q was that he was very knowledgable and very concerned about his patients reasons for WLS. He addresses the seriousness of the surgery and explains it is not an 'easy' way out.
After I was finally approved and the surgery had began Dr Q did everything within his means to keep from turning the surgery from a LAP to OPEN. I might've had more little holes but not to be opened up demostrated that he is a VERY SKILLED doctor in his field.
His aftercare has been great the followup appointments have helped educate me more and if you need to have an answer to a question he will call you direct ( not pass it off on one of the office staff).
The staff was great and handled all my inquiries and insurance needs quickly.
The only thing I would say to be lacking is a nutrisionist.
My first choice was Dr Davenport, however she only performs open, and I would like to do this lap.
That brings me to Dr Quioco. I called on 8/26 and scored a Consult appt for 9/16 !! I was told that Surgery usually "happens" 2 1/2 - 3 months after the 1st appt! I verified with Anthem that Dr Q is a participating provider, all I will be responsible for is my copays. I met with Dr Q on 9/16, he is a very serious man, he checked me out and then we talked in his office. He makes sure it's you that wants to have the surgery not your family, he also makes sure that you know the risks. Not rushed at all, asked me several times did I have anymore questions..
I already had met Dr. Q when he did my mother surgery. He is a great surgeon and a great man. However, he has a very dry sense of humor and doesn't get my jokes sometimes. His office staff was great, I feel like I have bugged the heck out of Charlene, but she is always nice. Dr. Q really feels that "this is your new body, you need to learn what you can eat". I sometimes wish he had a better aftercare program. Dr. Q has been doing this surgery for many years and I guess he probably knows better than I do. Overall I trust and respect him and his decisions.
First impression of Dr. Quioco - I felt totally at ease and trusting of him.
My impression has not changed, but has become stronger.
His office staff is very professional, warm, and caring people.
There is nothing I don't like about him or his staff.
That he is a wonderful, dedicated, knowledgable, trustworthy doctor.
He was adamant about aftercare.
He adressed the risks of surgery to the fullest extent.
On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate Dr. Quioco a 10+.
I prefer surgical competence to bedside manner.
