Coastal Center for Obesity Bariatric Center
I have not met Dr. Owens personally yet, I've only heard him speak at the seminar that his medical clinic held (with Carnie Wilson as a guest speaker). But he did seem very down to earth. He was very comfortable in talking about the surgyer and knew a great deal of the history and different types of WLS. Also, his concern for his patients seemed very genuine. He has personally performed this surgery more than on more than 1400 patients.
His staff at the clinic are wonderful. They are just the nicest and most helpful people. They are genuinely excited about you having the surgery. Some of them are WLS patients themselves.
Dr. Owens, along with the clinic (Coastal Center for Obesity in Orange County, CA) are very concerned about the aftercare of their patients. I have not had the surgery yet, so I can't say first hand, but it sounds like they have a very agressive recovery program in place for their patients. I know that they will have the patient up and walking the same day of the surgery. They also madate the use of nutritional shakes for the four weeks following the surgery. They also have a nutritionist, physical therepist, and psychologist as part of their staff that are used during your post-op recovery and follow-up appointments.
Dr. Owens definetly stressed the risks of the surgery. But in a way that made them factual, not scary. He makes the patient understand the risks, but also made the patient feel comfortable that he and his staff are prepared to handle them.
Well, I wouldn't rate Dr. Owens yet, as I have not had a one-on-one yet, but so for I think he's a very capable doctor.
He seams very nice I meat him at a seminar he had and had Carnie Wilson there to talk about here WLS. I meet post opt patients and they were very satisfied with the doctor. I meet some of the staff as well and they seamed very nice I submitted all my paperwork and copies of my insurance cards. I have Cigna HMO and Aetna PPO. Hopefully one of them will consider paying for my surgery.
Dr.Owens has a great reputation as a skilled surgeon. He gets straight to the point loved his seminar and my pre op visit with him.He is very imformative about WLS and has been doing it for some time. His office staff is great they sure have taken care of all my fears! One of the gals in the office had surgery with the DR.10 years ago.I heard his bedside manner is that he's pretty quiet I'll find that out soon. His support group is very great and his aftercare is wonderful. He stesses upper body exercise.Dr.Owens talked very much about the risks at seminar and had alot of patience when having to answer alot of questions from all of us attending.
My first impression of him was on an OK level, I really didnt know much about him. My impression changed over time due to being able to talk to him and learn his views and perspectives on the surgery. I believe that if a Dr can help you trust what you are doing is right, that is half the battle. I havent found something I dont like about him *YET*. He has a good bedside manner, doesnt make you feel embarrassed or rushed. Has a good sense of humor. He emphasizes after care and support groups like you wouldnt believe. He does have a very structured after care program and besides the eating regimin, lol or noneating, he teaches physical therapy and stuff. I know the risks of surgery and they scare me immensely however I am also scared of diabetes and heart failure and disease.. Weight those options...I so far rate him as a pretty good choice. I'll let you know more detail post-op.
Living in Las Vegas I felt that I had no other choice than to have the local surgeon, Dr Fisher, perform my surgery. I was not at all comfortable with the idea of that. I was discussing this with a friend from work who told me that Dr Fisher didn't do her surgery. She had gone to Dr Owens, and really liked the way he treated her and the helpfulness of his staff! Alas, my options are open again. I called Dr Owens' office and spoke with Valerie. She was so kind and patient, answering questions for me. We spoke for 40 minutes about the surgery. I then received a packet to fill out, and the seminar date. I attended the seminar here in town, and to my surprise, I felt completely comfortable. Everyone (Tina, Michelle, and Valerie) I have talked to either at the seminar or calling their office have been so nice. I was able to ask the doctors wife Tracy (who is also an RN on staff) and ask a few medical questions. I am so grateful that I found this doctor!! I am awaiting approval from my insurance. I know that if I am in need of anything, I can rely on his staff to help me. He seems shy, but very competent. He has performed over 1000 surgeries. He is concerned with aftercare, exercise, nutrition, and your general well being.
I think Dr. Owens is great. His staff is helpful and knowledgable.
The name of his center is: Coastal Center for Obesity, and is in Orange, California. Dr.Owens was very informative and I liked him alot. Was very caring and shows great concern over his patients. I feel like I have definately made the right decision having him do the surgery. He has a great bedside manner, and great sense of humor. He is very informitive regarding weight training and even shows you how to do each exercise. I really have no complaints about Dr. Owens.
Future patients should know that he is a very quiet man, but very smart, and will answer all your questions. He does the initial consultaion with others looking into the surgery. I did not know this. He goes through each persons history with everyone in the room. I did ok with this, however, some people might have a problem with it. They need to inform you when you call and make your consultaion appoinment that there will be others in the room with you, as medical records are confidential. He stongly emphasizes support group and keeping your appoinments, as well as exercise.
Overall, Dr. Owens is excellent and I would rate him a 10+.
