University of San Francisco Medical Center- Bariatric & Metabolic Center Hospital
Dr. Posselt is the only surgeon who would do my RNY due to how much I weighed in the first place. He is kind and supportive, and I find him a most pleasing physician to deal with.
I too have had some issues with not getting consistent information from other staff members, but have the highest regard for Dr. Posselt. I highly recommend him for your procedure if you live in Northern California.
Dr. Andrew Posselt is a highly skilled surgeon independently rated by Castle Connolly. He is also a transplant surgeon at UCSF. I selected him based on his qualifications and experience. I also felt that a transplant surgeon would be overqualified to perform routine bariatric surgeries. My hunch paid off given that I suffered no complications from the surgery and my recovery has been terrific. I would highly recommend him as a skilled bariatric surgeon. UCSF is a good facility overall. However, they sometimes lack the communication skills among the surgical team members. Specially, the residents need more supervision and help then they are given. The facility otherwise is an excellent hospital in Northern California. Be certain to seek out 13th floor rooms which are in par with modern day hospital accommodation and offer greater comfort then the standard dingy rooms. The most rooms on the 13th floors offer great views and large flat screen television sets. A comfortable room with great views would certainly promote healing and mental well-being. Trust me, when you are recovering from a major surgery, you need every bit of support you can get. Having a comfortable room with a view goes a long way in achieving this objective. Dr. Posselt is also an ardent advocate for his patients and he tries hard to fulfill patient's wishes to the best of his ability. Just remember to do your homework before selecting a surgeon. In my humble opinion, you could not go wrong with Dr. Posselt. Good luck.
I would never have had this surgery had it not been for Dr. Carter. His confidence in the process and procedure was palpable and just gave me the final impetus. He is upbeat and gives you a true picture of what your success could be like! It moves you forward. I know some wonderful bariatric surgeons but he is very special. My first impression of him was that he knew the surgery vs any other procedures and was fair and honest about possible outcomes as they applied to you (personalized). His staff was fast to schedule my surgery once they received the final approval and they were very efficient. His associates (other doctors) highly respect him and his work. They make a very seamless team. He is pleasant, funny, and comes to see you often. He is also concerned and doesn't hesitate to order tests or meds that can increase your comfort during your hospitalization. I can't say enough about him and I am sorry we had to move away, which in all fairness he advised against so soon. But he and his team supplied me with everything I needed to be followed by my current physician. I am doing great because of him. I thank them all.
I was very happy with my surgeon and the hospital stay. However, I had virtually no follow up. I followed up with my PCP but every time we did blood work she said everything was fine. A few years later I have an episode of Transverse Myelytis and am paralyzed from the chest down for months. I can not prove a connection, but my Vit. D level was 20. It should be 100. Seems like there should be more follow up there as the PCP don't seem to know what to look for. I can't help but wonder if any other people, that have had the gastric bypass had any experiences with auto immune diseases after the surgery?
My first impression of Dr. Rogers is that he was a no non-sense surgeon. He was polite answered ALL of my questions. Day of my surgery I felt a connection with him and he seemed for real. I felt I was in good hands. His staff was excellent during the entire process. After my surgery while I was in the recovery room, he spoke to my sister, who was at the hospital, to inform her of how the surgery went. Apparently there were concerns during the surgery regarding my heart, but he assured my sister that everything was okay and I was put in a private room near the nurse's station. A couple of days after the surgery Dr. Rogers came to see me. What a sweetheart! and not bad to look at either!!! He reassured me that everything was fine looked at my incisions and answered some questions. I would rate him as excellent, but wished I could have seen him a little more than just once post op.
He was busy and seemed to be not very personal. My impression did not change. The clinic I went to was staffed by some nice people, however the nutritionist who spoke to us on our very first day was rude and abrupt and discouraging. Dr. Rogers was not responsive to my pre-op calls and didn't even visit me in the hospital until the day I left. Aftercare was not emphasized at all except for follow up visits. No referral to support groups, on line communities, resources for food, vitamins etc. I have no doubt about his surgical ability but the bedside manner left lots to be desired. I would say that if you don't have to have surgery done at UCSF, don't. It's a big machine and quite impersonal, although the nursing staff was great. These of course are my experiences and someone else's experience may be different.
My first impression of Dr. Rogers was that he was so easy going, had a wonderful personality and took time to answer every question my husband and I had. He explained the benefits and risks of the surgery and complimented me on my research and readiness. In fact since I had planned to have surgery at John Muir which wasn't approved by insurance, I came to him with all my tests completed. He was thrilled and said I was the 1st one ever to come prepared to go and he said let's schedule surgery. My impression has not changed since surgery.
Esther his Assistant is very nice and responds timely.
Karen at the front desk is a little regimental but when I reached out to her in a friendly way she has come through like a dream when it comes to scheduling.
I had questions and got called back quickly by a nurse practioner and told them I would like to see more of a schedule in the post-op program. I was told that they are re-doing it.
I would recommend Dr. Rogers to anyone, he is an excellent surgeon who understands people.... he plays clarinet too!
