Temple Community Hospital Hospital
I had heard wonderful things about the hospital prior to admitting. Even though it's older, I was told that many patients were very happy that the nursing staff was wonderful. Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience. Too many times I felt that the nurses felt that I was bothering them for assistance when I needed them. Not all of them were poor but the ones who were really stood out and clouded my overall experience. I will say though that it is great that the hospital allows a family member/friend to stay in the room with you.
What can I say about the staff? Excellent!
My only complaint was that I couldn't seem to keep an IV in my arm for very long (weak veins)and so the nurses had to keep coming in and putting a new one in another spot of my arm. Then when they couldn't find a decent vain in my arms they had to quit giving me the morphine drip. Unfortunately, I had to have an ok from the doctor for oral medication and it was so late at night that they couldn't reach him. I spent one agonizing night without morphine but I got through it ok. The nursing staff woke me up a lot to check on me which was not always appreciated, especially in the middle of the night, but hey, at least they cared to do it, and always with a smile.
Before checking into the hospital, I was quite leery about it based on the other reviews I'd read here. I'm somewhat of a, ahem, "High Maintenance" kinda gal... so I was thinking this place was going to be a real dive and possibly even have sub-standard care. Still, though, I went with it based on the fact that it was the chosen hospital through the Liv-Lite program. ANYWAY... the hospital was absolutely FINE. Not luxurious by any means, but they were certainly accommodating; fed my husband 3 meals/day and let him sleep in a bed in the room with me! Couldn't beat that! The staff was incredibly nice; I felt like I truly KNEW them by the time I'd been there a bit. They were all so warm, welcoming and positive! The only low point was the hospital staff being mostly Asian; there was quite a distinctive language barrier at times. BUT they were all pleasant and tried their hardest, and with some patience on my part, we worked through those situations. All in all, I'd rate them as one of the friendliest hospitals around! I'd definitely go there again, if need be.
My fiance was able to spend the night in my private room. I found this wonderful. Patients were able to have visitors for as long as they like. And that made for a more pleasant experience. I unfortuately was located by a very vocal woman in an adjacent room who often made her needs very vocal. Other than that... I have nothing but high marks for Temple.
Overall my stay was very positive. I did have some problems with understanding some of the nursing staff. Many of the nurses are from other countries and do not speak English very clearly. Thankfully I had an easier time coping with communicating with them since I teach English in China for the last three years. But for others it might be stressful in getting your point across to them along with trying to understand what some of them are saying to you.
Pain management-They had me on Morphine continuous drip and it made me feel extremely anxious after a couple of days. I think it was too much for my system. The anesthesiologist was very helpful in getting my medication changed to something more comfortable for me. I also had two hernia repairs at the time of my RNY and I was very comfortable.
Chairs-I wasn't comfortable in the chairs in the rooms. The hospital should consider LazyBoy recliners or softer chairs for their patients afer surgery. It was extremely uncomfortable for me to sleep in a bed after surgery. But overall I received good care and am grateful to the staff for everything they did for me!
I'm not going to complain because I trust Dr. Nazarian and am just so grateful to have surgery. The only part that was REALLY bad was in ICU. They must assume that everyone is knocked out so the whole night they YELLED LOUDLY down the hall, laughed, told jokes, and I felt were VERY disrespectful to the patients.
