SSM Health Weight Management Services Hospital
The hospital was clean and adequate to meet my needs. It is just as good, if not better, than any other around. The only problem I encountered was that the "transporters" were so busy that I had to wait in recovery longer than I should have and it was worrying my hubby upstairs. Other than that one incident right after surgery, those transporters really know how to drive the hallways!
Nurses were repsonsive. I was awakened frequently for vital signs, labwork, etc, but that is just life in a hospital. The only negative comment I have wasthe transportation team: I had to wait about a half hour in radiology waiting for someone to take meback to my room after my swallow test. Also atdischarge,my husband had to wait 45 minutes at the entrance waiting for transportaion to find a wheelchair. They never showed up and my nurse ended up finding one herself and taking me down.
no hot water available because of dialysis on another floor--RNs had to microwave washcloths (Couldn't take shower whole time I was there) RNs aren't filled in on the aftercare needs in WLS--couldn't answer questions, slow to respond to IV pump problems, bringing meds, contacting physicain. Was told to sit down and stop walking because nurses were too busy to help me stand. When I had a question about how often I should change gauze for the drain, the RNs told me they couldn't answer it, I should know that from class. They said they didn't know much about the surgery, and I didn't speak to anyone from my surgeon's office until late Tuesday (a resident who had no bedside manner), so I felt really alone.
Felt like the Nursing staff need help on just basics....telling pt to move feet and legs and walk.....getting pt incentive spiromiter....trying something less for pain than the strongest med available to them. Was offered the anointment of the sick, but never got it. Did get communion! Never saw Dr de la Torra!!
Before surgery care was great, after surgery my first day nurse, was very rough, stepped on my foot 3 times, pulled my hair out when helping me change my gown, threw the call button onto my stomach, leaned over the bed and put her hand and weight on my stomach, then night nurses, would just come in bluntly turn on the light, say nothing then start to try and take blood or poke you in the finger, or shoot you in the stomach, no sweet talk, nothing, not that I am a big baby, but it's nice when you're not feeling well, to have someone at least ask you how you're doing. I had a really nice lady come in on the last day to try and get blood out of me, and the nurse was nicer on the last day. But for those 2 first days I was there If my husband had not have stayed with me, I would not have any sort of care. Also Dr had said that with each vitals the nurse is to tell you to pump your feet for blood clots...NOT A ONE TOLD ME!
I ran a fever for 2 days and have sleep apnea, I was in ICU the entire stay. The care was excellent. My doctors staff recommended that we not bring gowns and utilize the hospital gowns, however the hospital had a very difficult time locating larger gowns and I was continously asking for a larger gown. They were not well versed on the nutrition side, insisted that I should use a straw, and I was chastised for not eating more! Other than that it was the best hospital stay I have ever experienced.
The nursing staff is a problem. I think in general they are very good and competent nurses, but they are NOT trained to care for people who have had bariatric surgery. Not ONCE did anyone encourage me to walk, not ONCE did anyone tell me to flex my feet. If I hadn't taken the initiative, neither of these very important things would have been done.
The only complaint I had is the nurses are not instructed in how to deal with WLS patients. They certainly have no knowledge of the lap band procedure that I had. I had to educate them on what it was and how I was to eat and the protocol involved with the band. The radiology dept. at this hospital was rude and not at all accomodating. I waited about 45 minutes to be taken back to my room and I was sick. The radiology lady employee busted my IV and I had no fluids going in. The barium made me sick, and I had to sit there until someone had mercy on me to take me back to my room. I almost didn't get to go home that evening. Bad, bad experience.
