SSM Health Weight Management Services Hospital
I felt safe and comfortable with the pre-op staff. The people prepping me for surgery. But after I was moved to my room from recovery I was very disappointed, most of the nursing staff was nice but there were a couple who where very rude. They were all supposed to tell me everytime they came in per the dr's orders (and he also told me if they didn't to let him know) to do the leg exercises they showed us to help prevent blood clots. There was only one nurse who did remind me and she only reminded me about twice of the several times she was in my room. One of the nurses even got offended and arguementative because when I came in from recovery I was kind of out of it so I asked her to please not to forget to remind me, she said she didn't know what I was talking about so I tried to explain and she essentially said the dr was not her boss, I was out of it, so she argued with my family about it but I told my mother I didn't care if she was mad or didn't know, now she did and I just needed her to remind me because I was afraid I would forgot, but she never did. The other bad experience is that my fiancee' stayed with me in the room so non of the nurses helped me out of bed for any reason at any time. I did ask them 3 or four times to help so my fiancee could get some sleep and they would say sure then leave the room never to be seen again. My surgeon and operation where great but my hospital stay was very disappointing.
There are not enough handicap parking places.
We were told we would be in private rooms after the surgery. Instead, I was sent to a semi-private room. Since I was from out-of-town, my husband also went to share in my care and we had numerous problems trying to get him a place to stay. He was eventually allowed to stay in my room "on the floor" the first night, but only after he was first told he would have to sleep in the lobby and consent was given by the other patient in the room. We were moved to a private room on day 2, where he was given a nice fold-out bed to sleep on. Just be aware that this is a surgical floor and it appeared this was not a one time thing. You may not get the private room you were told you would get.
Everyone from the pre-op department to radiology was wonderful to me and my family. I was also very impressed by the care given by my daytime nurses and technicians. They made each day better with their smiles and willingness to help me heal with my kind of humor.
I was put through duplicate procedures without reason. Admitting/billing called for info. they already had obtained at the pre-op lab visit. I was typed and cross-matched at pre-op lab visit. Had band on and it was still "good". It was done AGAIN because order was there. Questioned why and not given an answer. Never had problems with blood sugar. Finger sticks were done although I was getting lab draws each AM that tested BGL. I guess as a RN, MSN I just expect health professionals to use their brains to cut down on non-needed procedures. I was kept in PACU for about 7 hours because there was no bed available on the floor.
I had three wonderful nurses (out of about 6). The other three were just dingy!! I found that what one nurse would tell me the next one would tell me something completely and totally different. It was somewhat confussing...but it all worked out in the end. I was across from the nurses station so it was quite noisy in the night. The over all care was very nice.
They are incredibly understaffed. It took FOREVER to get a nurse to come change my IV machine when it beeped, but when my mother or husband went to find a nurse after paging them twice, they were never just sitting around. They were tending to other patients with bigger needs than a beeping machine. It's not their fault, it's just a staffing problem. I would DEFINITELY recommend having someone stay with you if you have that option. My mother stayed with me during the night & was a huge help. I didn't have to wait for a nurse when I needed anything.. she was able to tend to 90% of my needs.
