I went to Dr. Mun at the suggestion of my sister. She is a research nurse at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Initially, I was going to have the Lap-band done by Dr. Jones at the Beth Israel but I could not stop thinking about a prosthesis being inside of me. Dr. Mun was also located at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. My sister stated he was the best in the area with the best record for Lap RNY. She had done extensive research on this and she had Dr. Mun do her surgery. Both she and her husband had the surgery. She has lost 117lbs. in just over a year and her husband has lost 238 lbs. in roughly the same time frame. In addition, a frind of mine who is a nurse also had Dr. Mun and said not to go to anyone else. He is a Harvard trained surgeon who is the premier specialist in this area of clinical practice.

When I met Dr. Mun for a second opinion...I liked him immediately. He was very professional, caring and kind. He was also not judgmental in any way. He described the research, the risks, the changes I would experience and the need for follow-up care. I knew immediately I had made the right choice.

Two years ago...his patients wanted to celebrate for and with him. They organized a huge fashion show South of Boston and invited him and recognized him with a plaque, etc. The show was a professionaly organized event. I was told by my sister he was gracious and humble at the recognition. I am grateful to have had him as my surgeon. He was recruited by Partners (the Medical group of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mass General Hospital and the Faulkner Hospital...all in Boston). He is now based at the Faulkner Hospital and will develop the program there. His assistant Joyce Clark is a joy and extremely helpful.

I recommend him highly to anyone considering this type of surgery. Dr. Mun has the rare blend of surgical competence and humanity.

Dr.Mun is extremely nice to speak with. He listens intently to any concerns or issues you may have in regards to your surgery. He explains in detail the various options you have as a patient and what he would suggest your best outcome would be. He makes sure you have started your supplements and have met with the nutritionist to fully understand your postoperative program. We talked about the risks involved and he explained them in detail. I felt fully aware of what would happen before, during and after surgery. His bedside manner and from what I understand from many of the surgeons I work with that he is a wonderful, talented and extremely competent surgeon. I feel very blessed to be having him as my surgeon.

Because I had post-op complications (wound infection), I spent an additional week in the hospital, followed by weekly visits to Dr. Mun.

He was absolutely terrific. He was patient, sympathetic, smart, and very concerned about my well-being. It was obvious to me that he had the respect of the other doctors and the nurses at BI.

Dr. Mun is moving to Faulkner Hospital, and I plan to continue my care with him. I wouldn't consider seeing anyone else.

My first impression of Dr Mun was that he was a very nice down to earth man. I felt very comfortable around him. As I got to know him up to and after surgery, I felt even more comfortable. He came to see me every day I was in the hospital and was great.
The office staff is fantastic. I love them all, very nice caring people.
If you're thinking about having the surgery at BI the only choice is Dr Mun.
Overall I would rate him an 11 on a scale of 1-10. Thank you Dr. Mun.

Dr. Mun was very pleasant, and informative. He went over both surgeries to make sure that I was confident with my decision for Lap band surgery.
He had me meet with a second surgeon to go over the surgery to talk of the benefits of both again.
The program is very thorough in making sure that all aspects of your care are met. I haven't had surgery yet but am pleased with all the assistance I have received from everyone.
the one thing that did stand out is the surgeons are definately more confident of the results of the bypass versus Lap Band.

I had to have a Revision by an amazing Surgeon Dr. Robert Zane he had to redo my RNY, since it was done incorrectly.(I do not want to name the facility or the doctor on this public board due to the rules here on OBH. you may email me privately and I will answer any questions) I had a RN but No Y. The surgeon that did my first WLS routed my Y up into my bile duct and into my Esophagus. My intestinal limbs were cut from 120 cm down to 40 cm. Dr. Zane was able to correct most of this damage. I also had two hernias that Dr. Zane cut right thru them. My pouch was a 4 oz capacity and was totally lacerated with ulcers due to the bile duct routing. I had the worse case of GERD u can ever have! (I suffered like this from Mach 2001 to April 2002) Dr Zane was able to re-construct me a 1 oz pouch from the former stomach that was folded and stapled.Oct 2002 I had to have another surgery by the wonderful Dr. Zane seems my intestinal wall collapsed and Dr Zane had to do a quick Intestinal hernia repair. He put in special Teflon. I was very ill and the hernia was growing bigger, and bigger. Dr. Zane only had me wait 30 days so; i wouldn't have to suffer very long! Dr. Zane has the best beside manner and he will explain answer and even tell you the Truth and has compassion for your pain as well!!! I wish Dr. Zane did my RNY the first time around!
9/5/00 first RN No Y. 4/2002 RNY rev. 10/02 major hernia Repair. There is alot more to my story, but we will save that for another day just so happy to be ALIVE! Thank you Dr. Zane

I met with Dr. Zane on October 20th. He told me what the surgery is, and we talked briefly about the after affects. I will be meeting with him 1-2 weeks prior to surgery, and he said that we would discuss it in greater detail then. My surgery date is December 28th, 2004.

Dr. Zane is very friendly, straight forward and honest. One of the best that Kaiser has to offer. Everyone in the bariatric recovery ward was good to me while I was in the hospital. They had an aftercare nurse, (and are in the process of hiring another) that you can call for assistance, answers, etc. but she either quit, got promoted, or fired. No one has said. The dietician is very good, and the monthly support group meetings are informative.

I cannot say anything bad about Dr. Zane. He was nearly perfect to me. I would and have recommended others to him.

dr. Zane and Dr. Hindee (the endocrinologist) explained the risks of surgery well. I would rate him (on a scale of 1-10) a 9 (no one is perfect)!

Both bedside manner and surgical competence are of equal value.

Dr. B was very thorough. I brought a list of about 80 questions I had gathered from friends and the internet. He went through everyone and answered, going into detail when I asked. His office staff is good, especially Stacey. It is Kaiser though, and being an HMO its a bit of a pain in the butt. At my 3 month check up he was planning on leaving California. I found out at 6 months that he didnt. I will be going back to him to find out what kind of tests I need at this point. My PCP is a dweeb, and no one has done any follow up on me. Again, Kaiser. Kaiser provides a monthly support group, but it doesnt have a great feeling to it. They lost their Bariatric coordinator and the program seems lost and underfunded. Dr. B stated the risks honestly and frankly. His aftercare program was nonexistant. Such a small bariatric staff cant handle what the needs of the patients are, and its a shame. Surgical competence was great, bedside manner fine too. I would definitely go to him again, and will suggest some ways to make aftercare better. Its not all in his control though. As I said. Kaiser.
