Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Hospital
I have nothing negative to say about Dr. Quilici. He and his staff are very nice. I havent met many really friendly surgeons. I dont think its their job to sit and shmooze with me. I want a great surgeon not a talk show host. So my impression so far is a good one. I am hoping to have a good experience and do everything he tells me to do. I believe the support group meetings i will attend at St. Joseph's will be the best help i can get anywhere. I will update as to his bedside manner.
Dr. Quilici has a reputation as one of the best surgeons in the area. He was independantly recommended to me by a few different doctors who don't even know each other. My dad is an anesthesiologist (though not in this area) and he talked to the anesthesiologist at Cedars Sinai who does more of their WLS cases to get the inside scoop on who was the best surgeon. The other doc told him that while all the bariatric surgeons were good, that she really preferred Quilici because he was not only as good as the others, but he was also fast and had gifted hands. He doesn't scrub with residents, so that means your surgery will take less time than if he was teaching residents while he was working. This means less time under anesthesia, which is a good thing. rnrnI switched to his practice after I had done ALL my pre-op testing, etc, in another bariatric practice. Therefore, I cannot say what the entire process was like from start to finish. I switched to Quilici and had my surgery 9 days later. He wanted to get me in quickly, but I did have to give the gal in his office who does the insurance approvals a little \"nudge\" to make this happen.rnrnI liked his assistant doctors (Tovar and McVey) as well as Julie (nutritionist). He sponsors a support group lead by a psychologist. The surgery and post-op diet info is very good, I actually switched from another practice at Cedars-Sinai and I felt Dr. Q's info was more complete and his pre-op class was better too! (Though to be fair, these other surgeons are also very good from what the anesthesiologist above had told my dad.)rnrnFor post-op visits I see whichever doc is available--usually it's been Dr. McVey, once it was Dr. Q. They, as well as Dr. Tovar are all very skilled so it really doesn't matter to me which one I see.rnrnThere is one small thing that I would change--Dr. Q closes the incisions with staples--I wish I would have known that because if I did, I would have asked for stitches or liquid stitches instead. Yep, that's purely for vanity reasons. My incisions are quite small but I'd have preferred no staple marks.
He is very popular with his patients, however you typically don't spend much time with the doctor. He is generous with his patients offering different types of support groups at no cost. His program is very structured, the therapist, nutritionist, and the rest of the staff are there to assist. He has a lot of patients so there is usually a wait when you go for appointments. He is an expert in the field and I felt very comfortable with Dr. Quilici as my surgeon.
I like doctor Quilici, except you do feel rushed. He doesn't spend much time with you, but then again he always has a full waiting room to get to. As for office staff I think its a strange group. some are very nice most are not and not some of diffulculties I had getting through the steps to surgery was do to there lack of follow up and I believe work ethics. But I'm through that part now and ready to go. Surgery Friday Sept. 10.
I had my first appointment on 9/24/08.The wait was long but I was quite impressed with how the whole appointment went. We had a very small group meeting with Julie prior to seeing Dr. Quilici. Julie explained, very well, the various surgery options and the whole process before and after the surgery as well as the various risks. She was patient, and answered all sorts of questions. I thought I had done my research before getting there but had some surprises. She answered so much that once I got to the doctor I was out of questions. I liked Dr. Quilici. He comes highly recommended. He is very too the point and is not a big talker. He will give you his honest opinion. It will be short and to the point. I was sort of concerned after reading the various posts concerning him. I , however, found him kind, caring but once again very short. I feel very confident with his skill and I am anxiously looking forward to getting this show on the road. Because of my age I need to see a cardiologist and a gastroenterologist prior to getting a surgery date. Those things will be accomplished this week. I am hoping that I will be able to have my surgery by the end of the month. New patients will also have to get a psych eval and attend a support meeting. I have both of those accomplished. The office seems very well run but it does seem difficult to get the office to return a call. I feel very comfortable in the hands of this surgeon.
Dr. Quilici is great. He's very skilled at what he does. Even while I was in pre-op, the nurses were raving about how good he is. I have another medical contition that made my surgery a little more challenging, and they had every confidence Dr. Q was the only one that could handle it. His aftercare is super. I'd rate him a 10 out of 10
