The day of surgery I was in a hospital of excellence. I experienced professional people, a clean facitlity, and my surgery was right on time! The surgery team was very reassuring and concerned about my comfort and pain level when I woke up. I had a great CNA (Rose) who made me very comfortable in my room and was very caring.
The next day deteriorated each hour I was there, and was more like I was on some crazy hospital comedy. This included 3 shifts of nurses before I could convince someone to stop running around and help me out of my bed to walk, midday (day 2) before I was even told what the breathing device was for next to my bed (10 seconds of instructions necessary), an iV tower that either beeped night and day, or leaked my medications all over the floor (hey, did I need that?), and OVER 8 HOURS of wait and frustration to get a 3 minute Upper GI so that I could be cleared to eat or drink and then go HOME. My only angel was my CNA, Nicole. Throughout the day, she tried to help me, mop up medication spills, fix beeping machines, refill ice packs, and generally just be NICE. She was the only one that would help me get up and made it so I could do it on my own. All while helping the extreme vomiter next door. Ironically, I overheard Nicole being scolded twice by someone sitting behind the desk for being too busy to respond. WHAT??? She didn't even begin to defend herself to the degree she should have AND had a smile on her face each time I saw her.
When I finally got to radiology in the evening (no food or drink, day 2) the place was empty and a guy was kicking his feet on a file cabinet. I was told that they were busy and short on transporters. Believe me, I would have walked myself! After I got back to my room, and got my "discharge broth" (5:30), I probably set a new record for a bypass patient drinking and packing at the same time. I told my husband that we were not hanging out for the probable delay in the discharge process. We were going to get out however it needed to happen. My RN must have finally heard me because she came running in with discharge papers while her patient in the next room was vomiting loudly. Kind of sums up the day.
Would I come back? Yes, the surgery went great, but I would probably find another hospital where I could have a it all. Would I complain and be a much less easy going patient if I ever did come back? YES!!! I should have called my surgeon and a patient advocate to get me the upper GI. I went from feeling GREAT day 2, to feeling squishy and weak because they could not get me a 3 minute test so that I could procede to food and recovery. I'm sure my insurance company would not love that I was there unnecessarily past checkout, just waiting...It really boils down to things seeming unorganized and departments not helping each other out. I was totally dependent on my RN and she was not my advocate, nor a good listener. I hate to make this issue define my review, but it certainly did cloud my experience when so many other things went well.

I loved that fact that I had direct contact with my nurse and ma... didn't have to push a button at the nurses station to get hold of them
Staff was extremely helpful and pleasant... truly tried to anticipate my needs.
