I WAS IN POOR HEALTH WHEN I WENT TO SEE DR, MILLER. IN FACT, I WAS TOLD I PROBABLY WOULD ONLY MAKE IT ANOTHER 4 YRS.UNLESS I TRIED THE SURGERY. HE TOLD ME MY GOAL SHOULD BE 110#. I HAVE LOST 115#, AND IN BETTER HEALTH THAN I HAVE BEEN IN 20 YRS. NO MORE INSULIN,AND BLOOD PRESSURE IS NORMAL. IT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME. I AM 65 YRS. OLD AND I CAN'T IMAGINE HOW SOMEONE YOUNGER WOULD FEEL. MY SON IS 42 AND IN REALLY POOR HEALTH. DR. MILLER DID HIS SURGERY THIS MORNING. I AM SO GRATEFUL.

I have noting but EXCELLENT things to say about my Dr.rnrnThe thing that I like the most about Dr. Miller is that he takes time to LISTEN to me. Alot of Dr.'s just talk. Dr. Miller actually listens to me and that means alot.rnrnOk onto answer the questions on this list.rnrn1. My first impression of him was that he was very polite and thorough.rn2. No my impression has not changed. Actually it has gotten even better.rn3. His staff is very friendly and down to earth. They make me feel very comfortable. Especially is Medical Assistant Kathy. She is great!rn4. I can't think of anything that I don't like about Dr. Miller.rn5. Future patients should know that you will be in good hand with Dr. Miller.rn6. He does emphasize aftercare. He tells you like it is. Obey the rules! If you do you will do well! That simple.rn7. The aftercare program is FANTASTIC! Mount Carmel has 3 support groups and a NUT onstaff to answer ALL of your questions.rnThey have an emotional support group, general support group for bariatric patients and an nutritional support group. I believe that these support groups will be KEY to my success.rn8.Dr. miller did advise me of the risks of surgery. He put everything in plain english for me to understand. I liked that.rn9. I would give Dr. Miller and EXCELLENT rating!!!!!rn10. I would say that both his surgical competence and bedside manner are GREAT!!rnrnSo far my experience has been great!!!

The postop nurse, Dave was wonderful. I had complications after surgery and he was by my side for almost 5 hours and called my family regularly to keep them updated.

On the floor, I was constantly being checked on and if I pushed the call button and had a need, they were right there. All the nurses were so nice and helpful, it almost made me want to stay longer.

I would rate my experience with the hospital 5 stars out of 5. They really were the best.

What was your first impression of him/her? I liked him immediately.rnHow did your impression change over time? Stayed the same for over 2 yrs now. He's cool and very patient friendly.rnHow would you describe his/her office staff? We got off to a rough start. I had to do a lot of management and follow up to get things done for me. I felt that I should have been paid for the work I did to arrange my own appointments, follow up on paperwork, etc. In the end, even with the hassles, it was worth it. You have to be very organize to get positive results in a timely manner. I excel at that, but not everyone does. Oh well. I can be very driven when I want something done. My advice is to know exactly who is doing what, when and how they are doing and keep notes, and you'll be fine.rnWhat did you like least about him/her? I only hate the location on the westside of town because I live on the eastside.rnWhat should future patients know about him/her? He is very good. Do what he says, and your results will the expected barring any uncontrollable factors. Control what you can to minimizee setbacks and risks. [That is good advice for anything in life, not just Bariatric Surgery!]rnHow much does he/she emphasize aftercare? He is very passionate relying on you to do what you should to help yourself be better. I'm glad he was not a crutch. I needed an expert who gave me advice, not another crutch.rnDoes he/she have a structured aftercare program? YesrnHow did he/she address the risks of surgery? Matter of factly and I really liked that. I felt he did not try to glamorize it. We set realistic goals, and I made a mental notes to prove that I could do better than goal. BTW: I did do better LOL!rnHow would you rate him/her overall? On a scale of 1(worse) - 10 (best), he is a 10.rnWhich is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great? Both are great.

Hospital has attached parking garage, lots of good directional signs to find your way around. Its a Level II Trauma Center so I felt that was an indicator of capability to handle emergencies which I never had but it was good reassurance.

The hospital was great. The nursing staff was horrible! I am a nurse myself so I know what to expect and had high expectations! After I had a fit on all the staff and the management though the care was a lot better! Advocate for yourself if you are a patient here! They won't do it for you!

Do not assume that all men in women in scrubs are doctors or nurses. Mt Carmel West has an odd practice of not being able to control the janitorial staff when they decide to dress up as doctors and nurses. I found out quite by accident as after my surgery, I was nauseated and disoriented. I walked around the floor and could not find my way back to my room. I called out to a "doctor" dressed in surgical scrubs, "Please can you halp me find my room, I'm feeling very faint" His response was a gruff, "I don't know where your ROOM is lady". I walked a few steps further and began wretching as I clung to the hand rail along the wall with one hand and onto my IV in the other. Two "nurses" dressed in nurses scrubs rushed up to me as they saw I had the dy heaves and was about to mess up their floor (presumably). I told them I could not find my way back to my room. They asked what my room number was, and I said I had no idea (I was wheeled in earlier that afternoon, quite groggy from surgery). Their response was, "Well if you don't know what your room number is we can't help you." One was kind enough to try to get me to sit on a rolling bar stool but logic (and a physics class) told me forward wretching would send me zooming backward on her rolling stool. I continued walking and wretching and was nearly doubled over in throes of nausea and FINALLY, what must have been a REAL nurse, came up to me, looked at my wrist band and instructed someone to go to "the board" and find my room number. Thankfully I was returned safely to my room. When I filed a complaint about the treatment by the "doctor and two nurses" a PR person from the hospital said that it was probably the janitorial staff. She went on to say they have been told NOT to wear hospital scrubs but,..."You know...help is hard to find and they are already operating at only 50% of staff". Even in my morphene-induced state of semi-alertness, this struck me as just about the stupidist thing I had ever heard. Are janitors at police stations allowed to run around in police uniforms for good morale? What about janitors at military installations? Are they permitted to run around dressed up like officers? I think Mt Carmel is a law suit begging to happen if they consider turning a blind eye to this practice any longer.
