NewStart at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center Hospital
The nursing care was horrible. I am so disappointed as I am an RN and I pride myself in excellent care of my patients. I was left my first 8 hours after surgery without being able to reach the call light. I didn't want to yell, because I had a roommate. The didn't see that the compression devices were on my legs at all during the first night after surgery and they alarmed all night, kept me awake, and of course, couldn't call the nurse for help. I am also disappointed with Dr. Naaman in that he NEVER spoke with my husband after surgery, my husband had to ask around to find me...and he waited in the waiting room, just as the doc asked him to. It's a good thing I am an excellent patient and a nice person.
Had my first consulttion on 12/14/03. Dr Spiegel was very nice and courteous. He had a great sense of humor, maybe a little dry at times kind of catches you of guard but he laughs often which counteracts the dryness. He seems to be dedicated to his patients success and he believes fully in the benefits of the Lap Band surgery. He only does Lap Band and although he has been doing this WLS for only one year he has several years of experience in Laparascopic surgery. He took his time explaining both the benefits and risks of the procedure and he made you feel comfortable enough to answer all of your questions.
The office staff was very nice although both of the girls working the front desk were just starting (was their first day)but they made sure I had answers to my questions before I left.Overall my exprience was good even my hubby left feeling better about the surgery and that alone was an accomplishment!
The hospital itself was OK -- the nurses however were something else...Of the 10 or so different nurses that came into my room - there were only 2 of them that were informative and helpful...The other ones were just there to do their time and really didn't care how a person felt....I told one nurse that my head hurt and she just looked at me for a whole MINUTE --now that doesn't sound like a lot of time - but try staring at someone for a whole minute... it is very uncomfortable... and she said NOTHING about my headache... just stared at me...strangest thing! Then some idiot comes in to the room in the middle of the night to take your blood - which I never understand why they have to do this at NIGHT.. and since my veins are collasped becasue of the no food/drink deal - he can't find a vein... he in turn dug and poked and poked all over my arms for a vein and could only get a drop or two of blood -then he went away -- a few hours later he came back... for more. I left that hospital with bruises all over me. Actaully when I went for pre-ops -- the nurse who took my blood - missed my vein or something and I told her it was burning -- she didn't believe me -- but I woke up in the middle of the night with a HUGE knot on my elbow -- where blood had collected... burning hot and I thought surgery was going to get cancelled because of it... They do not know how to use a needle there - so be careful of who pokes you! If my family had not have been there -- well I don't know what I would have done -I think they just stick you in a room and hope someone else takes care of you.... I don't like the hospital and just won't go back if I don't have too!
When I first tried to call for the nurse's station, my nurse's buzzer was not working. I had to yell down the hall, crying for a nurse. Luckily a visitor in the bed next to me was able to call a nurse for me. They did fix my buzzer a short time later. The RN that worked my first night shift was horrible. When he answered my call (yelling for the nurse) I told him I was in pain. I was in so much pain, I was crying for pain medicine. I asked him to call my doctor, immediately. I don't think he did. He told me I needed to walk. I could barely sit up much less walk. I forced myself out of bed and I forced myself to walk. I almost collapsed the first time. He did not help me in our out of bed. I am sure it was gas, but his bedside manners were severely lacking. He brought me some pain medication (not sure what it was) and said, does this help?. I told him NO. He said, it must, you aren't yelling anymore. I was in such pain; I still had tears in my eyes. I asked him if he called my doctor, he didn’t answer. I am sure I was rude to him at this point. The whole time he was talking to me, he was looking at the ceiling or the wall, but not at me. I told him I was still in severe pain. This was about 7 PM. I was still in pain at 11pm. This time, a new nurse showed up and said she talked to my doctor (didn't the other nurse?). She gave me pain medicine and I felt better right away. I asked her about the other nurse, didn't he talk to my doctor, she said, no she did. After she gave me the medication, I was able to walk more. I was so relieved. I had to call them each time I went for a walk to remind them to boots back on my feet. The would have left them off. :( Because I had to help myself in and out of bed so often, the hand with the IV swelled up to almost double the size of my hand. I was so bruised. When I left the hospital, my left hand was double the size of my right hand. It took about three days to return to normal. The nurses never checked my hand or said anything about it. My husband noticed it. I hope I never have to stay at this hospital again. If I have a choice, I won't.
