Massachusetts General Hospital Hospital
My only regret was that I didn't get a private room. I was on Ellison 7 and all the rooms were full. I had a loud roomate and that made resting difficult. I had my surgery on 7-18-03 and I had weekend staff and I found them all to be wonderful. I adored each nurse and did my best to help them help me.
I wouldn't go anywhere else when having major surgery. I have had major surgery there 4 times and feel extremely safe knowing I'm at one of the top hospitals in the country. At first I was concerned over being in a teaching hospital and also that I would feel I was just a room number. I have built relationships at MGH that will last a lifetime. I felt I was part of a family. I would also like to mention that I have been a patient on other floors, but I prefer a private room and my sister wants to stay with me 24/7. Therefore I now request a room in Phillip's House and we feel we're in a grand hotel! (little more expensive, but WELL worth it!http://www.mgh.harvard.edu/visitor/phillip.htm
Surgery date: February 28, 2003.
Hospital Review date: March 14, 2003.
The bariatric surgery by Dr. Janey Pratt was excellent.
The recovery room made an error in the meds given me (had documentation re: bad reactions to certain narcotics, and still administered to me (morphine, specifically). Luckily I was alert enough when I got to the floor and the nurse commented on the Morphine pump...I informed her I was not supposed to get Morphine, and she checked my record and changed it and I was better...Very scary. Food protocols for GBS were not followed...no food offered, even after specific request made to "nurse of the day"...no johnnies to fit me, 2 days in a row...luckily I had brought some of my own pj's, etc. Weekend staffing, poor planning, and the upset of crises on a surgical unit made this stay less than optimal. I was very surprised by the status of the MGH unit and THRILLED when I could leave 3 days post op.
I;m hoping my situation was unique and this was the exception rather than the rule for MGH...known to be one of the best hospitals in the world!
the nurses are not told more information on how to handle Gastric Bypass Patients. With there foods or meds. They need to have a certain section in that hospital just for these patients after surgery. Right now they put you on any floor and then those nurses dont always know how to handle your after care. They brought me Ginger Ale and Sugared Jello.. Thank god I was aware of what I could and couldnt eat otherwise I would of been in big trouble.
