Massachusetts General Hospital Hospital
In a word, amazing. I only gave the rating of Excellent because there isn't a higher one. The care was incredible. I was on Ellison 7 surgical unit. It seemed to me that the patient/nurse ratio is very low there so that the nurses have the time and resources to care for the patients. I rarely had to wait for anything and all my needs were met immediately and cheerfully. The rest of the staff was equally impressive. The nurse in the surgical induction area was a WLS patient herself and was very enthusiastic and encouraging about the surgery, explained everything that would happen, and held my hand the entire time until I was under. You can't ask for better care.
I was afraid that, being a huge city hospital, that it would be understaffed and noisy. I didn't find that to be the case at all. It was quiet and restful with a cheerful nonstressed staff. I can't praise them highly enough.
I was truly the most afraid, scared patient there could ever be. But I knew I had to do something to get healthy because my diabetes was out of control. Even tho I only had 70 lbs to lose, my blood sugars could not be controlled even with the insulin pump inplant. I had research and was informed that over 90% of diabetics that have this RNY gastric bypass, actually leave the hospital after surgery, OFF INSULIN, and blood sugars are regulated. I was not one of those people (yet) but my blood sugars are always in the 150 range and I only take insulin in the AM and at bedtime. So I went from always feeling sick and taking approx. 300 units a day of insulin, to now after 6 months I have lost 60lbs., and have so much energy. Somedays I forget I'm 53 and I run around like a teenager. I am soooo grateful for this surgery!!
