Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Hospital
The nurses were fantastic!! In pre-op, one of the nurses had had gastric bypass surgery and she stopped by to let me know how pleased she was and that I was in very good hands. Post-op, the nurses on the ward were fantastic. They made sure I was comfortable at all times of the day and night. Even changing my pain medication so that I wasn't tired and could walk around.
The nurse's aides were helpful in helping me bathe as I could not do it myself after surgery. A couple of the nurses were really stellar, but they were all good. I was lucky in that though I had a double room, I didn't have a roommate. I think that if I had had a roommate, I would have been disturbed by the noise and commotion. No one ever encouraged me to get out of bed and walk. The only problem I had was that I had a severe headache from the pain medication that I was getting. They kept giving me more pain medication, which only made things worse. When I went to a support group meeting on my way home from the hospital, I found that many patients were familiar with headache as a side effect of pain medication. It's really surprising that the surgical residents who were caring for me couldn't figure it out. I really got good care but wonder after reading some of the other comments, whether I got better care because I'm a physician.
I can't say enough good things about Fair Oaks hospital. The doctors and nurses all were very friendly and treated me as equals in my care-- there was no condescention. They were very polite when entering my room-- if my door was closed, they always knocked.
Visiting hours were very long-- 8 am to 8 pm-- plus certain relatives can stay overnight.
Fair Oaks has free valet parking during the day (until 6:00 pm). The valets are not allowed to accept tips, so it is really free. This service is necessary, though, because it is hard to find a parking spot on your own.
This staff is used to dealing with WLS patients. The food and drink is geared to our needs-- no worry about receiving sugared jello, for example. There were even extra-large wheelchairs for those of us who need them!
