El Camino Hospital Hospital
I started my foray into a surgical alternative for my obesity on August 16th 2007 at 326 pounds. I had a laperospic vertical sleeve gasterectomy accomplished by Dr. John Feng. My first impressiion of Dr. Feng was that he was interested in me from the git go. My first telephone conversation with him lasted about 35 minutes. He even called me back when we were disconnected. My admiration of him as a humanitarian and prodigal surgeon grew with each conversation and meeting. Shelly, his nurse, is more than competent, bubbly and supportive. You should know that Dr. Feng is attentive, caring and available. He delights in his profession and the blessings it can bring to others (if they take advantage of the tools he offers). He also avails himself of current studies in his field and passes that information onto his patients. I like that ALOT. He emphasizes aftercare and offers support groups through monthly meetings with him and educates his patients about Obesity Help.com. He is the person who told me about this website. He is very honest about risks and benefits and that this surgery is just a tool. He is right. That is all it is. That is however, what made the difference for me. I took his advise very seriously. I am currently at 176 lbs. Overall, I would rate Dr. Feng on a scale of 1 to 10 at 200+. I cannot speak highly enough of his caring and professional skills. So, which is better, his bedside manner or surgical competence? Well, if you would like both, choose Dr. Feng and you will be in the very best of hands. If I had any suggestions it would be that I would like to experience a more indepth aftercare support group, separate from the surgical information meeting. rnrnI exercise regularly and am currently seeing a personal trainer as I have about 25 lbs. to go and I find it getting a bit tougher to loose these last pounds. I am thrilled about my personal trainer, Dan and Cheryl of PATH in Pleasant Hill, CA (925 691-5854).
I first met Dr. Feng after a thorough visit to his excellent website. Weight Loss Surgery was something that never occurred to me until this year, but when it finally dawned on me, I was thrilled to discover it may significantly reduce my diabetes and possibly help me get off some of my meds! Dr. Feng has a great method of gathering information during the preop process. I felt that my best interest and readiness were evaluated, and going through the steps was worth it. Dr. Feng and Shelli take time to answer questions and show a very positive attitude. I especially liked that Dr. Feng showed me the Lap Band during the consult. His office provides a rich information packet which was perfect for a curious person like me. There was also a video link which I shared with my family, which helped them understand. I was pleasantly surprised with how they responded to my news, and I think the facts were helpful to having everyone's support. My first insurance request was denied, and I spent some months looking for other surgeons but ultimately concluded Dr. Feng was the surgeon for me based on his experience and how thoughtful and engaged he is in the pre and post op experience of his patients.
What can I say? He's the best. He knows his stuff and can talk like a regular person, too. While he's not super touchy-feely, he does have a big heart. And a sly sense of humor. rnrnAftercare and support are very important to him--he wants to know how we're doing. He made sure I knew the risks, answered all of our questions, etc. rnrnHis office, from the front desk to the P.A.s, is fabulous and very responsive. I would recommend him to everyone (and I do!)!rnrnFuture patients should know that these people are serious about helping you save your life. Be compliant and life is good.rn
I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Albert L. Wetter and the staff who took care of me at the hospital in Burlingame! My Roux-en-Y surgery was performed in 2003.rnDr. Wetter was very honest and straight-forward when I questioned him about his experiences, including the less than pleasant topic of complications. He had performed many successful surgeries, but unfortunately had one fatality which he made no effort to hide from me. When I asked, he shared with me exactly what happened in that particular case, including his regrets, and I know it weighed on him just because of the way he approached & relayed that experience in such complete detail as if it had just happened, though it had happened years before.rnWhat impressed me the most was that I felt Dr. Wetter and his staff did an excellent job of educating me, and letting me know just exactly what I was involving myself in. I was also very well informed of what I would need to do to maintain optimum health after my operation was completed. He was also flexible in working with me when I encountered negative situations while going through my pre-op requirements. (EX: At the first group support meeting I attended, the leader of the group was giving people hints on how to get around things that shouldn't be done when post-op. After I relayed my experience, Dr. Wetter allowed me to complete my Group Meeting requirements via online chat rooms & posting boards.) I realized how well informed I was when I started chatting with others on the internet, and I felt very fortunate to be placing myself in Dr. Wetter's capable hands.rnI did experience some post-op difficulties which I was promptly helped with. (I should mention this was my own fault for going on a kick of eating lots of jerky for my protein source. Too much salt!)rnAs well as being an exceptionally competent surgeon with a tremendous amount of experience in this field, the icing on the cake is that he is a very warm person with a wonderful, caring bedside manner.rnIf I, for some reason, had to go through this procedure again, I would very comfortably & willingly seek out Dr. Wetter to perform the surgery.rnAs I write this, I am 5 years out past my surgery, and I feel my operation and results were a wonderful success. I VERY STRONGLY recommend Dr. Albert L. Wetter for anyone who is considering bariatric surgery.rn
Dr. Feng is FANTASTIC!! He did my sleeve last August (on my 25th birthday, LOL) 2007rnI have absolutely NOTHING but wonderful things to say about him. He did a great job talking me through my options but I went in KNOWING I wanted to have the Sleeve (my mom had a DS and knew I couldnt take the pills required)and he was very respectful about my opinion and agreed with me on that decision. rn He was very active in my care and sincere. He has helped me with a few issues that I have had (not associated with the sleeve). He keeps a very close look at my labs I get done. He ordered extra vitamines I need (as a result of the lab work). rn I have NO COMPLICATIONS whatsoever with my sleeve, but if I did I knew he would do whatever he had to do to help. rn He is understanding and not intimidating at all. You know.. how some doctors look at you funny because your overweight. rn Anyone looking into the sleeve... I have always given his name because he is such a wonderful dr and I trusted him. I had to trust someone that I as putting my life in his hands (i couldnt die bc I have sole custody of my 4 yr old.. LOL.. besides the obvious reasons). I was so nervous walking into the operating table that I started to cry and he just held my hand and was saying everything would be ok. And it was!! THANKFULLY!!! lol MY WHOLE experience with him has been NOTHING but wonderful! rn
