Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery Hospital
Dr. Sudan is the best!! The best of the best. He not only did my WLS surgery, he also did both my mom and dad's. He literally saved my dad's life, because he found a rare cancer in him, and took it out during his WLS surgery!! If it wasn't for the surgery, there is no test to detect his type of cancer until it's too late. Dr. Sudan is very caring, professional, and doesn't treat big people differently than little people. His staff is excellent too. I have nothing to say about him, but positives.
I have not met Dr. Sudan formally he will be the primary surgeon but initial consult was with Dr. Forse. Orientation was very organized and informative. He seems to be very professional and have a passion for his work. rnrn10/05/2007rnCompleted my pre-op testing and met with Dr. Sudan for the first time. He was professional. I couldn't think of any questions because I research so much myself. I did have one and that is how long is the surgery. I did ask as well about the staples he cleared that up quickly. Staples are better becasue there is less infection and because he takes them out after 5 days little to no scarring. Home there are no nasty oozings. Yuk. i am on the count down, 10 days to go.
Dr Sudan and his staff are awesome. They have been very helpful and courteous in this journey so far.
My surgeon was Dana Portenier. I am so happy to have had him perform my surgery. He has an excellent bedside manner. He takes his time in explaining and making sure that you totally understand. When I first met him over a year ago I was a little skeptical about him being my surgeon. Only because he looked so relaxed, calm, and just a normal person, while the other surgeons appeared very poised and articulate. So once I got the call to schedule my surgery I was praying please don't let it be him. I thank God that he decided to not answer my prayers! Dr. Portenier is the BOMB (great). I will continue to see him for any future surgery's that he is able to provide!!!rnrnThe staff of Dr. Portenier is not to be forgotton. Beth the program corrdinator is awesome. She is very knowlegeable of her job. She is resourceful, and has th patience of Jobe! She helped me through a rough time with my insurance and did not back down until there was an approval. rnrnI would highly reccomend the Duke Weight Loss Surgery Center to any and everyone who is considering this surgery! They are there for you from day one, and for the rest of your life. They are considered a Center For Excellence and I am very honered to be a part of their program!!!
I have to say all the nurses, LPN's, everyone was very supportive, caring and attenative even if they weren't assigned to you - I don't think anyone will get a good night of rest at a hospital b/c they are there to check on your vitals and see how you are all during the night, which is great but tiring, it is totally understandable though. Parking was a little far, I had seen nurses and employees all parking towards the front in the visitors parking area which I think should be for visitors only and not employees. I had a great experience with limited problems.
Dr. Sudan came across as experienced and committed to the treatment of obesity. I was impressed with his surgical history and felt very comfortable with him. I looked at other surgeons in the area and I kept coming back to Dr. Sudan. His office staff was helpful and professional. My calls were returned quickly and all paperwork was filed when they said it would be. I never felt rushed with Dr. Sudan. He answered all questions --if I didn't have questions the visits could be a bit short but I didn't need the extra time. I have just started his aftercare program and am excited to begin this journey~
It was clean and provided the necessary basics. Rooms are considerably smaller than those at other facilities. The rooms were very tight, but each was a private room. Furniture, etc. in rooms seemed at least as old as my 25 yr old kids. Clean and in good repair, but old especially if compared to other hospitals, such as UNC Chapel Hill. Generally, care was very good. However, didn't receive some medications for another condition and there was a problem with pain meds on one shift.
I must say all the nurses that cared for me was great, until the last day. The male ICU nurse I had really cared about my needs and made sure I was very comfortable. He really need a raise. The 2 nurses assigned to me my last day was horrible. The had NO bedside manners, just did introduce themselves to me. Otherwise my stay was good.
