Gastric bypass surgery is still a relatively new surgical procedure, and I feel that in time the hospital will develop the means with which to expertly handle the special needs of morbidly obese patients. Compared to society in general, the staff at the hospital is much more compassionate and informed, but there may always be that one rogue individual that lacks understanding.

I found the staff at Christiana friendly and very attentive to my needs. One person who was etched into my mind was a lady whose job it was to transport patients via wheelchairs, to other areas of the hospital for additional testing. The lady who showed up to take me back to my room ,with the I.V. Machine in tow, immediately stated: "I can't push her by myself, I'll need some help." Another lady then came over and took my I.V. Machine and began walking down the long corridors back to the elevators and to my room on the fifth floor. The whole time the lady was pushing me she was chating with other co-workers who passed us. Then when we were at the elevators, she said to the other lady holding the IV machine, "I didn't mean I needed help with the pole, I need help pushing her." I really felt awful. The man who brought me down to the test area did it all by himself, pole and all. But that was the only time I felt awful while I was in the hospital because of my size.

I felt that my care was excellent and that the staff was very compassionate and willing to provide the best care possible. I had my medications and other requests met everytime in an orderly timeframe with 1 exception. Overall, they were there fore me and offered help and encouragement to do the breathing exercises, walk and other things to help feel better.
I know that they provided special equipment to make sure that I had what I needed from a special bed, wheel chair and potty chair. I only used the special bed myself.
Overall, I would highly recommend the staff on 5D. The average for finding a restfully quiet experience was more related to my roommate than anything else. She listened to the TV very loud and had lots of visitors. I tried to be patient, because she had already been in the hospital for 4 + weeks. I must admit though that I would have rather had a better roommate.

My hospital experience, my daughter's hospital experience and quite a few others was horrible. there is no special area for biatric patients. you are put in a room with other patients suffering often much more serious and painful conditions. my roommate had colon cancer and moaned all night. I was able to 'share' the entire experience of hearing all the details of the 6 hour surgery and got far more information that i wanted. my daughter has a similiar experience in that her roommate was very very sick. there is talk of a biaratric ward in the furture. in my opinion that is not soon enough.
