Cabell Huntington Hospital (COE) Hospital
Before coming to Dr Nease I had been to other WLS surgeons and attended their seminars and even 1st appointments. I had corresponded with several via email. I was scheduled for surgery with another surgeon for my BPD/DS and then I found one more surgeon that I had not checked in to - Dr Nease in Portsmouth OH. I admit - the wait to get in to him in his office was extremely long b/c of all the patients - but once I got back to see him and met him for the first time I knew he was the surgeon I wanted even though scheduled with someone else. That first appointment he spent an hour with me explaining everything. (the reason for the long wait, of course!!!)
I knew I was only going to be his 2nd DS patient but I was totally confident in his ability and had peace about the change at the last minute. He came down to my level and talked to me like a human not some object that was going to make him more money. He took time to listen and answer all questions. He is very honest and open with all the risks as well as all the benefits of WLS. He & his wife Sheila are genuinely concerned for the obese and you will see that in your first meeting with either of them.
Before Dr Nease moved to CA I had the opportunity for some follow up and he was just as genuine and concerned afterwards as he was pre-op, always taking his time. He then was taken to CA. It truly was Ohio's loss and CA's gain. I had my BPD/DS on 8/19/2002 and was 404lbs pre-op. My surgery was uneventful and had a fairly uncomplicated recovery. In one year I have lost 125 pounds and still losing.
The DS is the best thing I've ever done for myself and I would be more than happy to answer anyone's questions regarding this surgery. Just email me on my profile page. I chose it over the Gastric Bypass b/c of the more normal lifestyle I can lead post op along with long term success of keeping weight off.
If I had to do over again I'd do it in a heartbeat and wouldn't change a thing about my experience.
my first impreeion of dr. nease was he truly seemed like he cared. after a couple of visits and him doing my surgery i knew i was right.
his staff was wonderful. they were all very helpful and took the time to make sure the patient understood everything. he was very involved in the aftercare program and even had support group meetings.
he sat down with me and explained the risks involved and excatly what he would be doing to me. there were no surprises.
i would give dr. nease an excellent rating. his bedside manner and surgical compentence was beyond my wildest dreams.
Dr. Nease is the BEST!!!! Took time to explain everything, before and after...His office staff were wonderful even when you see them out in the store they inquire how you are doing. I would suggest him to anyone wanting to have the surgery done. He moved from Portsmouth Ohio to Garden Grove, CA, and we really do miss him here. He's not hard to look at either. :) He showed a slide presentation to a group before he would even let you have a single appointment. He has a very structured before and aftercare program. My problem was with the hospital.
I have carried my weight around for over 20 yrs, but was really obese the last 5 yrs. I had been researching WLS for awhile, when I found Dr. Nease through a girlfriend of mine that worked at Garden Grove hospital. I had also reserached surgeons for a long time.
I liked Dr. Nease because of his background that brought him to this profession. His father was Morbidly Obese and passed away from complications. Dr. Nease's heart is in his work, more so than any other surgeon I have met. He wanted to do something to help other morbidly obese individuals.
I was Dr. Nease's first patient to have this done here in California. I had already seen two other surgeons prior to going to Dr. Nease, but once I met Dr. Nease, I knew he was the surgeon for me. You can see the warmth and compassion in his eyes and you know that he cares about you for YOU and not just another patient.
I had an uneventful surgery. I healed very well, I had very minimal scarring and I have followed the diet exactly as he has stipulated. To date, I have lost 58 lbs and I take my protein in abundance. I have had no dumping or throwing up and I am very aware of what I eat. This surgery has given me a complete new lease on life. I am happier than I have ever been and I am loving life!!!!!!
I found Dr. Nease through a referral from a surgeon in Ashland, KY. I went to my initial consult with Dr. Nease to go over my weight and to start paper work, then I went to his seminar.
His seminar was very helpful, it provided me with all information about the surgery that I needed, as well as about Dr. Nease and his reasons for being a bariatric surgeon.
Dr. Nease was an excellent surgeon, he was very caring and compassionate and was there for me throughout my surgeries (gall bladder and a scope). He called me at home quiet frequently to check up on me and anytime I had questions, he always returned my calls as soon as possible. I am now almost one year post op and lost almost 100 lbs. Despite the additional surgery, I would do this WLS surgery in a heartbeat. Dr. Nease is a fanstastic surgeon!!!!!
In addition I have had two family members that have had surgery with Dr. Nease as well.
I called Garden Grove Hospital about the surgery back in Nov of 2002 and attended Dr. Nease's seminar. Dr. Wittgrove was there also and the seminar provided so much information about the surgery. It answered all my questions and helped me to decide.
I submitted all my paper work for ins approval and then in March I met with Dr. Nease for a consultation.
After I was approved, I met with Dr. Nease again and we set up my surgery date. I was scheduled for surgery on 5/16/03. I started out weighing 476lbs. About 2 weeks after surgery, Dr. Nease told me I could go on semi soft foods, so I had some split pea and ham soup. Unfortunately, a piece of ham got lodged and I was in pain. I went to the ER and Dr. Nease came in, they did an upper GI and found the problem. Dr, Nease did not get upset with me, he told me that this can sometimes happen. He then told me that I was going to have to have an EGD to remove the food, so I would not be in pain any longer. Throughout this entire procedure, Dr. Nease stayed right there with me. After I was sent home, he called me quiet frequently to check up on me, see how I was doing and to make sure I was ok.
Dr. Nease is one of the most caring and compassionate surgeons I know. He makes sure that you have all the information you need to make a decision about WLS. His seminars are informational and excellently presented. I highly recommend Dr. Nease to anyone looking to have WLS.
I attended Dr. Nease's seminar about 2 mos prior to my actual scheduling of surgery. I was overwhelmed by his seminar, not because of all the info he gives you, but how open and sincere he was. He was so open with us and I am not use to this with a normal size person when dealing with obese individuals.
Dr. Nease shows you slides of his family. His Father died from complications as a resulf of morbid obesity and this is why Dr. Nease is a bariatric surgeon. The information that Dr. Nease relays to you at his seminar is not only professional, but hearfelt. He knows where we are coming from.

My surgery was on 7/19/02, I had lap RNY and had an uneventful surgery. I had surgery on a Thursday and was relased from the hospital on Sunday. I was up walking the same day as surgery, which Dr. Nease stresses to us! He says that he offers the surgery and support, but you have to do your part too. I was back to work within one week of surgery. I have lost a total of 120 lbs to date. I have had no complications whatsoever.

I would highly recommend Dr. Nease! I always wanted to be a jogger and I am running 5K in August. I owe everything I have accomplished to Dr. Nease and his staff. He is so caring, compassionate and supportive of all his patients. You are just not another patient to him, but a human being.
I would very highly recommend Dr. Nease to do the surgery. I had spent the past year visiting a variety of hospitals and talking with Drs. regarding the procedure. I was scared and in all honesty wasn't even sure I was going to do it. There are several hospitals in the Orange County area where I felt as though I was part of a "cattle call" , others did not offer the pre-op or post-op support group and individualized attention that I felt I'd get with Dr. Nease.
I attended a seminar about 2 months prior to my surgery at Garden Grove HOspital and after hearing what was said, I knew that I wanted to do the surgery. After the presentation a friend and I asked Dr. Nease if we could ask him a few questions.
Well.... an hour later we were still in his office but you see that is his. style. He answered all of our questions and explained everything in great detail. He cared and it showed by this interaction. It was at this time I knew I'd found what I considered to be the best Dr. for my surgery.
On May 16 I had my surgery. Everything went very well. Dr. Nease visited with me each day I was in the hospital(2 days) and he even called me several times after I got home. Again, he answered any questions I had. I was up and walking around 3 hours after I got up to my room.
Dr. Nease and his staff are very supportive, extremely kind, good, caring people. They offer a monthly support group and I have never called the office without receiving the answer to any question I have. There is a pre-op seminar to explain how to eat post-op and we've had two post-ops seminars - one on nutrition and one on exercise.
I did have an infection at one of the wound sites and that is still healing. Dr. Nease instructed me how to care for the wound and although the healing process is taking a bit longer than I like, it is healing at it's own pace. My understanding is only 5% of patients get this infection. Lucky me :-) Five of the six scars are slowly disappearing - my primary care physician even commented how wonderful the scars looked.
Would I recommend Dr. Nease? You bet and I have already. Meet with him and you'll understand why.
I invite anyone to email me with any questions.
My life has already started to change and it's only been 6 weeks. It is an adventure though and be sure you are willing and ready.
