Cabell Huntington Hospital (COE) Hospital
MY ONLY COMPLAINT WAS THAT WHEN I ARRIVED FOR SURGERY, I WAS FORGOTTEN ABOUT BY THE WARD CLERK AND THE END RESULT WAS THAT MY SURGERY WAS DELAYED BECAUSE THE STAFF DID NOT KNOW I WAS THERE. THIS CREATED A LOT OF STRESS AND ANXIETY ON MY PART. INSTEAD OF A 9:30AM SURGERY, I DID NOT GET ON THE O.R. TABLE UNTIL ABOUT 5PM. HAVING THAT MUCH TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT, I JUST ABOUT CHICKENED OUT. I KNEW THAT I HAD CAME TO FAR TO BACK OUT AT THAT POINT IN TIME.
Finding this office was a God-send. Dr. Blaine Nease and his staff are incredible. When I first walked into the office I was welcomed with open arms, compassion and smiles. Everyone on staff is upbeat and enthusiastic. That enthusiasm has continued in the 5 months and 83 pounds since my surgery.
Dr. Nease is confident, caring and witty. He puts you at ease the minute you meet him. His knowledge and competency is very reassuring. He counseled me on the different surgeries available, but didn't hesitate to give his opinions on what is best for me, while at the same time, explaining the risks involved. His bedside manner and reassuring mannerisms, however, seemed to minimize any fears I may have had. Competency and a great bedside manner! What more could you ask for?
Because I live several hours from the surgical center, I have kept in touch via phone calls and email. Any concerns I have had about the changes in my body have been calmed by Kimberly Do. She has provided me with great ideas, product/nutrient information and insight.
I am so grateful to have found Dr. Nease and his staff. What an incredible experience this has been. I recommend to anyone, anywhere, who is considering bariatric surgery to talk to Dr. Nease and his staff. I can guarantee your experience will be wonderful. And if you choose them to do your surgery, your experience will be a positive, life altering one!
Dr. Nease and his staff are second to none. The office staff is wonderful. Training given before and after surgery is very thorough and very good. Dr. Nease's skill level = 10+, Bedside manner 10+, an extremely competant and caring personal surgeon. The hospital staff at Garden Grove Hospital is also very good and much better than I have been accustomed to.
No surgeon I spoke with in the midwest would consider a lapriscopic RNY for someone my size, which was 521 lbs. Everyone I spoke to prior to Dr. Nease demanded that I have an open operation. Dr. Nease successfully completed my operation lapriscopically in 3.25 hrs which obviously makes him the leader in his field. I was very impressed by the measures taken to check for and make sure there were no leaks in my post op system. I am even more impressed by the fact that Dr. Nease was able to operate on me lapriscopically. Not having the big scar makes a huge difference to me. It also makes a huge difference in post operative recovery time. I am only dealing with the pain of excersize as my body was reaching the limits of carrying all this weight.
After I met him at the seminar my instinct told me Dr. Nease was to be my surgeon. I did further research on the internet and also I learned of all his credentials to do this type of surgery. What really sold me that he was so sincere. He discussed and showed family photo's of his father that struggled with obesity. He decided, based on his father's illness, that he wanted to use his training to help those people with weight problems. Dr. Nease spoke at a seminar that lasted approximately 3 1/2 hours. His drive to educate everyone on the surgery seemed to be the most important thing to him. His program is very thorough and his staff highly professional. His surgical competence and bedside manner were far above any expectations I had. I just feel I chose the perfect doctor and I feel very confident I received the best care available.
I just liked what I had read about Dr. Nease. I liked him very much -- he was personal and informative. I looked for a Doctor who was going to be INVOLVED in my recovery - and someone who has had a history treating the disease of obesity. He also had a great bedside manner, was very nice and understanding. He cared about my personal needs. He came highly recommended to me and I would definitely also recommend him to anyone thinking about having this surgery.
First became interested after seeing ad for the Carnie Wilson seminar in Orange County. Had seen her story on TV and was interested in learning more so we went to Dr. Nease/Wittgrove seminar. After the seminar, my husband and I discussed the seminar and we decided to move forward and do surgery. I researched all the side effects and different things that could happen - even though there are some risks, it's worth it as my health was already getting bad - HIgh blood pressure, apnea, arthritis in back and hip. It was all going to get worse - thought to rid myself of these ailiments was worth the risk of surgery.
Went to meet with Dr. Nease where he showed us an informative film. He was wonderful - he explained everything - answered all my questions and when I left I felt he was very down to earth and very comfortable with him as a person. Eight months have gone by and everytime I visit with him, my confidence grows.
I had alot of pain after my surgery - felt like I got ran over by a truck, but that only lasted a week. Within three weeks things were fine. Know that the first week can be painful - all worth it though! Just know that it is going to better!
Garden Grove Hospital was wonderful! Everyone who works there that I came in contact with knew what they were doing. Very polite and caring staff.
It's important to know that immediately post-op, you miss your friend food - it's an addiction and then it's taken away from you. Be prepared to deal with it mentally. Luckily that has passed and I have no issues with not being able to eat as much!
I first attended the Carnie Wilson lecture and was impressed with everyone. I talked to Dr. Nease afterwards and he answered the questions I had. I kept putting it off because I was nervous, but knew when I was ready to have surgery I wanted Dr. Nease to do it. He seemed like he really understood what I was going through having a father himself who struggled with being overweight. I always felt like I could call anytime or everyday if I needed (and I did at times!!) One thing that struck me about Dr. Nease is that he remembered me 7 months after that first lecture when I was finally ready for surgery. A++ for overall rating!
This surgery is an option for people who are ready to make the commitment - no whining about about the water you need, the foods you can't eat, and decide that your life is more important - you are worth it.
Look for the Dr. that fits in the same category. Make sure he/she is a straight shooter and you should be too! It's time to quit kidding yourself and it's OK to get help! The pain and suffering we have gone through as morbidly obese people we are lucky to now have a tool that can change that! Like we love other things that are important to us, we need to make ourselves that important. Reach out for that tool.
I found Dr. Nease to be very serious, no games. Have been searching alot of Drs., and found him through his website. Wanted a surgeon who had "been there/done that" or had a family member who had been obese and Dr. Nease was that person. He touched my heart. He's available any time. He tells me "you're doing a good job", that's more than anyone has done in my whole life. I wish I could be with him all the time, be on his staff, I would love to work with him 24/7 because I believe in his abilities! Over time my opinion of him grew stronger. He told me all the risks - his seminar is very informative - bring a notebook to take lots of notes. If it's information you want than do not miss the seminar.
Be serious - make the commitment to yourself and to him. The aftercare program is comprehensive. We have nutritional lectures, support groups and we call anytime and get a return call. The focus is on us!
