First impression - down to Earth, knows his business, can be trusted. Impression did not change. Office staff - awesome; very excited to be going through the weight loss process with me (and others like me).
Yes, he addresses the risk and tries to make sure that this surgery is really something the patients want and that they are willing to do what it takes to succeed post-op with their weight loss goals.
Surgical competence of this doctor is A+ as well as his bedside manner. I was concerned more about being able to trust his surgical competence since I would not be awake during the surgery.
Dr Melvin is a great caring guy, and I was so happy I researched the internet and found him. He always good to answer your question, and to know just how your feeling, I hope anyone reading this will no in my heart he is a great surgeon and man, and everyone in his office makes you feel so welcomed.
My 1st impression of Dr. Melvin was great. I felt at peace with my decision of having surgery after meeting him. I have no complaints about him or his staff, as a matter of fact, I have had lots of doctors through the years for various things being we moved around alot in the military and I have never met anyone like him. He is the best in every way. I wish I could have him for our family doctor, but I wouldn't want anyone to lose out on such a terrific surgeon. I would recommend him to anyone. There is not one thing I would of changed about him or his staff. The only complaint that I would have about my experience is my room at Vanderbilt. It was the most depressing place, very cold. The walls were all white and the floor looked dirty, it wasn't comfortable for my husband (terrible chair for him to sleep in)who helped me the entire time,(I felt sorry for him) which kept me from calling on nurses. They need to do something about that. It needs to be a more cheerful place and must look clean.
My first impression of him was fantastic, he just sat right down and said ok ask me questions, and boy did i have a lot of questions. The office and staff, well let me say this, I can't think of a more impressive word to say about them. They are the best. The office had wide enough chairs so you could sit in the waiting room comfortable and there was hardly any wait time at all. This is a great office and staff, they really take their time with you and help you all they can.
My open RNY was performed by Dr Willie Melvin on 12/18/2001 at Vanderbilt. He was extremely open and honest with me about the surgical risks as well as the hard work required of me postop to be successful. My insurance company placed time limits on my approval but Dr Melvin and Vanderbilt were very accomodating to work me into the schedule. He is a very kind and concerned physician with a wonderful, friendly smile. I never felt rushed during clinic visits and he always answered my many questions thoroughly. There were a few long waits at clinic appointments, but I knew that he was taking as much time with other patients that he would with me. The hospital care was wonderful and the Nutrition program at Vanderbilt provides excellent pre and postop support. I highly recommend Dr Melvin and Vanderbilt.
Dr. Melvin was very courteous and nice...he performs all of the open gastric bypass surgeries at Vanderbilt in Nashville....He answered all of my questions intelligibly and without hesitation....I am glad that he will be performing my surgery.....he put an a.s.a.p note on my file to get things going a little faster.....This office is magnificent. They are always trying to help you in any way that they can. They are always kind when you call for updates or any other correspondence. They even e-mailed me about the status of my pre authorization for my surgery. What else can you say. Great Choice...
