Dr. Melvin and his staff were absolutley wonderful. I really don't have any complaints about him or Vanderbilt Medical Center. From the time I stepped into the hospital on May 19th, until the time I left, I felt comfortable and at ease. These are some of the nicest people I have ever encountered in my life. They took real good care of me. Even though I experienced some major complications a few weeks after surgery, I don't blame them. My body was in such distress from all the years of abuse I put on it. When re-admitted for pnuemonia and infection, they once again took great care of me and my family. I would recommend Dr. Willie Melvin and Vanderbilt Medical Center to anyone who is considering having wls and lives in Tennessee or surrounding areas.
UPDATE: I am gonna have to change doctors my BCBS has an exclusion policy, so i will have to get a doctor that takes my medicare and tencare...I have found a new doctor at Vanderbilt. I have just about all my ducks in a nice little row. Hopefully a date soon. Will update u soon. Dr Melvin is my Doctor now.
Dr Willie Melvin is just a great doctor...he is so ready to answer all questions that you have for him...as far as my surgery went...great and no complications but a bit sore..the overnight thing was okay but I would loved to have gone home the same day but insurance would not let me so I stayed..there is nothing that would change my mind about Dr Willie...he's a together package and so is his staff so if you are looking for a great doctor...HE'S THE ONE...my hospital stay wasn't the best..they were all out of rooms so I had to stay in the holding area and it was noisy and loud and I didn't get a real hospital bed until almost midnight so the foam and metal made my back sore and uncomfortable. but otherwise ok..
Dr. Melvin has an excellent bedside manner. He was very easy to talk to, and I felt very comfortable with him.rnrnThe only concerning point was that I asked him about nursing my baby after surgery. He told me that I should not have a problem doing so, but when his nurse practitioner heard about this, the NP brought me into his office and told me that I would have to wean or reschedule my surgery. Which left me wondering...should I listen to the surgeon or the staff? I feel that they should have totally been on the same page.rnrnPOST OP UPDATE:rnDr. Melvin did an excellent job on my surgery. My incisions are very small and smooth. He uses dermabond and staples instead of stitches, so my the incisions should disappear well. My only disappointment with Dr. Melvin is that I didn't see him during the entire experience. Vanderbilt is a learning hospital, and I only saw one of his assistants beforehand, and groups of interns later. I found it strange that he didn't come by to see me even once. I would assume that we was just tied up, as I know that he does scheduled surgerys on Mon and Tues, and emergency surgerys during the rest of the week. His assistant was nice and calming in pre-op, but she was a little rude after surgery. I think she just needs a little work on her bedside manner.
He was very nice and encouraging. I had an encounter in the waiting room with a post op patient that said I wasn't big enough to have surgery and gave me the whole horror story of her surgery and problems. She made me feel very guilty and he and his nurse really calmed me down. He assured me that I was doing the right thing now, before I was bigger and became diabetic or hypertensive. The entire staff at the Vanderbilt Center for Weight Loss is very nice and sympathetic and encouraging. My calls and concerns are answered immediately and no one has ever gotten impatient with my questions. The after care program is very extensive and they really keep up with you and your progress. I would encourage people that are near Nashville to consider Vanderbilt. I went there because of my insurance, but I am glad I did.
Dr. Melvin was compassionate, knowledgeable and knew how to put you at ease. He took time with you to answer your questions before the surgery and after. I have nothing but good things to say about him.
Just completed my 6 week check up....still love Dr. Melvin....he is very caring, makes you feel special.....He takes all the time you want to answer questions. He is so helpful....you think you are his only patient.
