8-15-02 I have met with him twice so far. He seemed kind. When giving me a physical he did not make me feel uncomfortable at all, even offered a helping hand to sit up. I am disappointed that it takes so long for them to send papers into the ins. comp. the wait is so hard. I understand i am not their only patient, I will update after surgery....

Dr. O'Malley doesn't sugar coat anything about this surgery and the need for patient conpliance with diet and exercise. He is not overly friendly. This suits me fine. He answered all my questions openly and honestly. I believe he is one of the best surgeons in New York State.

Dr O'malley was a dream. My first impression is OMG he is SO YOUNG! He was very impressive and very knowledgable! When he started to talk about the surgery I understood just how much he knows and how knowledgable he is. He puts a lot of stress on aftercare, that you HAVE to follow his time line of appts. 1 week after surgery, 3 months after surgery, 6 months, 1 year and then once a year after that, his letter says that if you don't plan on these appts this surgery is not for you. I thinks he is a great doctor. He is known for being surgically gifted. its a longer wait for him, but in the long run I think it is worth the wait! Diane his office secretary is very stressed so give her a break, and don't call everyday, OK :)

Well I haven't met with Dr. O'Malley yet, but I had previously had my group session scheduled for January 31, 2003 and my 1 on 1 was scheduled for February 3, 2003, but just recently I received a telephone call from his wonderful right hand lady Diane and he is now holding 2 group sessions per month so now my group session is scheduled for October 31st, 2002 and my 1 on 1 is scheduled for November 11, 2002. I was so happy to get this phone call. It makes the wait seem so much bearable. I have also scheduled my appointments with the nutrionist and psych which will both take place in November. Hopefully surgery will be right around the corner!

my internist recommended dr o' malley. i called in late october to make an appt. and was told he held informatonal meetings once a month, the next was the 3rd week of november, and the sec. made a one on one appt. for dec 12. the group meeting was very informative, everyone had very good questions, something i might not have even thought of, others did. i also needed to have an umbilical hernia repaired and at my appt. with dr. o he said he would be able to do both . he is professional, business-like and very matter of fact. i felt very comfortable and confident in his abilities.
at that appt. i was given my surgery date of may 7th. i then had to make appts. with a nutritionist, a pyschiatrist and for an ultrasound to check my gallbladder. preferred care approved me within 3 days of all the paperwork getting to them, it was about 2 wks. prior to surgery.
surgery went fine, the anesthesist was very reassuring, dr o popped in just before they took me in, the pa, betty, who is a freind was there in recovery when i woke up. the hospital (highland) was good, i had a private room, the bed was specially equipped for the supersized. it was fairly easy to get in and out of bed.
dr o came in that afternoon to say everything went well, he didn't find anything he wasn't supposed to! i was hme in 3 days.
1 week after surgery i did develop an infection in the hernia site, dr put me on antibiotics for a wk.

Update.
I've gone to group info. mtg. and my consultation appt. with Dr. O'Malley. He was quite thorough in the group mtg. with explaining surgery, aftercare and longterm care. He is straight forward, knowledgeable and has a nice personality that goes along with his professional side. I met Diane his office right hand woman and she is very nice and helpful. He was a bit rushed for time at my 1:1 consult which didn't bother me as he explained all at group and I didn't have any questions for him at tht point. I feel very confident in his abilities and in my choice of surgeon.

A friend had him as her surgeon last month and is doing well.

I first encountered Dr. O'Malley at the group meeting he holds for people interested in pursuing bariatric surgery. I thought he was rather brusque, but he covered all the necessary basics and answered everyone's questions. My opinion of him altered somewhat when I next encountered him during our first one-on-one session. He seemed shy, diffident, not as confident. I liked him, though and I knew he was right on the cutting edge (no pun intended) of gastric bypass procedures. He is still in his thirties, but he has done nearly 1,000 of these procedures. His aftercare is quite good and he makes a point of emphasizing that this is no free ride. You have to do all the work. It's not a magic bullet. I came through my surgery fine and have thus far had no problems adjusting to my new way of life. If I have any quibbles at all with his care, I would say his practice has probably grown exponentially and he is in danger of becoming overworked. Fortunately, he recently hired on additional office staff, but I believe he (and his patients) would benefit greatly from the services of a nurse practitioner or physician's assistant. Lastly, I would have like to have had more notice that my surgery was approved by my insurance company. I didn't find out until ONE WEEK before the procedure that it had gotten the green light. That is just not enough time to get mentally and physically prepared. I would have preferred knowing at least a month in advance that I was okayed for the surgery.

He was very nice. He explained everything very well (I had done a lot of research ahead of time, and he didn't leave anything out). He answered all of my questions completely. I had previously heard he was a bit on the gruff side, but he wasn't that way when I saw him! He also came to our support group as a "guest speaker" for a Q & A session. (If you are interested in joining the BEST support group in the Rochester, NY area, click on the link where it says "Web Site" at the top of this page. This is an on-line group at Yahoo that also has meetings twice a month in Rochester.)

He is sometimes described as a "man of few words" but I think that's because he's a bit shy. But he is a fantastic surgeon, I'm amazed that he was able to do everything laproscopically. He visited me every day in the hospital and was very nice. You couldn't choose a better WLS surgeon! He has the most experience of any surgeon in the Rochester area, and has operated on patients weighing up to about 700 pounds.
