I found him as being very nice, he also explained the procedure in great detail as to which I really had no questions to ask him he answer all of them at the group meeting. My impression has not changed much he a good doctor and really knows what he is doing. They are all great. I liked everything about him. He's a great doctor and will take the time to answer any questions you have. A great deal. He pulls no punches he tells you all the risks envolved. On a scale from 1 to 10 he is definatly a 10.

Love him!!!!
Very honest and forthright. "Professional" and takes pride in his job!
He visited with me everyday...durring recovery.
Makes sure all of his patients knows, in detail what the surgery is about. His assistant, Dianne is very helpful and friendly. On a scale of 1-10(10 highest) I would rate him an 11+.

My first impresion was very much like most other patients have written. He is very professional and comes across as very skilled and knowledgable. He is not a Dr. that you could warm up to.

He explained the riskd of surgery very very thoroughly and emphasized the importance of aftercare very strongly.

His office is very busy so you have to be a bit patient but they are all very accomodating and proficient.

My surgery date is May 21. I will update after surgery.

Everyone else has commented that Dr. O'Malley certainly isn't "warm and fuzzy", but is thorough, knowledgeable, and clinically excellent. So far, I guess I'd pretty much agree - although he's young, and cute, in an irish sort of way - Ha Ha Ha! That always adds something positive to the experience, doesn't it? His mandatory educational seminar really was quite good. I thought that I knew everything there was to know about Roux-N-Y (after all the research I'd done), but I learned a few things that I hadn't known. Also, it gave me an opportunity to see the man, see his knowledge, question his experience (great), and I also got to see his sense of humor, as we all enjoyed a couple of shared "laughs".
My personal consultation with Dr. O'Malley the following week was basically the same - my impression was one of a surgeon who is extremely strong clinically and who I will trust with my life. Further, I sensed a warm and caring human being who is rather on the shy side, which may be why people don't get the "warm and fuzzies" from him. I like him.

Now for the one negative: Today is 2/6/03 - I am 12 days out from my scheduled surgery.
My "packet" still has not gone from his office to my insurance provider because he hasn't dictated his final note. It is

3/1 - An update: I had my laparascopic R-N-Y on Feb. 18th, and, as promised, was discharged 2 days later - Feb. 20th. I can't tell you how very happy both I and my husband are that I went to Rochester (it's 1 1/2 hrs. from our home) and had Dr. O'Malley perform the surgery. He may not be warm and fuzzy and hold your hand going in and coming out, but he certainly is an excellent surgeon who knows exactly what he's doing and has it "down to a science". My husband works in the health care field and has seen many other people who've had R-N-Y surgery. He's never seen anyone recover as quickly or with less difficulty than I have. We both believe that this can be directly attributed to Dr. O'Malley's skill, talent and knowledge. I give Dr. O the highest rating possible - I would not hesitate to use him again myself or to recommend him to anyone I care about. Thank you, Dr. O'Malley!

Also, I believe that he now has a new partner, so that may ease some of the "paperwork burden". His office also has just come together in one central location so all of his staff is now there, and I believe that will help in effective communication with the office.

My first impression of my Doctor was he is young. But, he has the experience needed to do the job, right. He is an excellent surgeon. His office staff of one is very knowledgeable and busy.
He was excellent to me before, during and after my surgery. Every Doctor that talked to me only had the highest regards for Dr.O'Malley and what a wonderful job he did on me.
I would rate him 100%. His surgical competence & bedside manner are very good.

Dr. O'Malley is a fantastic surgeon! My first impression of him at the group meeting was "he doesn't look like a surgeon", well what really is a surgeon suppoed to look like! LOL! He was very thorough in his explanation to the group of the surgery, what it entails and every detail from one-on-one meeting with him to follow up after surgery, i was throughly impressed! My surgery went wonderfully on 11/15 and was released on 11/17 with no problems whatsoever, i would HIGHLY recommend Dr. O'Malley...he's a top notch surgeon!

My impression of Dr. O'Malley at both the group meeting and personal meeting was that he is a very knowledgable & busy surgeon. He was willing to give me the time I needed for any questions I might have, and his bed side manner is cordial, but he's not the warm and fuzzy type [very professional]. I like that. He's not there to be my buddy, but he is going to do major surgery on me, and I want to feel he is competent and sure of himself and the procedure he will do. I got that impression.
He is very adamant about understanding the life changes that are required afterwards, and he's up front about the risks. They are there, they happen, and he doesn't want anyone not to recognize this. He's also strict about post op care and appointments, and compliance isn't optional.
Rating a surgeon is an interesting concept. I will be asleep so will be clueless, and I will be sore afterwards but that is expected. At this time I'm willing to say this. With the research I've done at several support groups that are made up by a majority of his patients, and with the praise heaped on him by patients that he has already done the same procedure on, I have to say he is the surgeon I feel the most at ease with doing the surgery. He has the reputation as one of the the best in his field in this area. I really wanted him to do it, and appreciate that he will.
The most important in my case is surgical competence. Bedside manner should not be undervalued, but excellent has to be better than Mr.Friendly and adequate.
Diane has been very helpful and runs the administrative part of the office. She is also a very busy person and has to run the office for everyone's good. I won't bug her constantly when she's working on your case if you won't bug her while she's doing mine. OK?

PostOp statement: Dr.O'Malley was very consciencious about visitation while I was in the hospital, and his surgical team were also there several times a day. At no time is this ever treated as an elective procedure. I was Impressed.
