William O'Malley Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
My Doctor was Dr. William O'Malley from Highland Hos. in Rochester. He's quite a young doctor. Which is what I Was looking for. I wanted someone that was versed in new techiques. He makes his office calls brief and to the point. Don't expect him to spend a great deal of time with you. But considering the volume of his practice I expected that. He's pleasant, but quick. I saw him only once before my surgery date. The only complaint I can make is he didn't go and speak to my family when the surgery was over. I think that consideration was due. He preformed a Lap Rouen Y on me and I have had absolutely no problems with the proceedure. His office staff consist of one person, Dianne. She seems to handle all of his office chores. We did not start off well together but that has gotten better over my past few visits. After care is stressed. I had to go back one week after my surgery, then once a month for the next two months and now I don't go back for four months. I have had four successive diets to follow. I would grade the surgery a sucess and my surgeons competence great. Bedside manner, so so.
Dr. O'Malley is very professional and he takes weight loss and the surgery very seriously. He is very through.
I like Doctor O'Malley
His staff is excellent they help you every step of the way. Leave no stone unturned.
There is an extreme amount of emphasize on aftercare. The way I understand it is the surgery does your weight loss work in the beginning but the rest of your weight loss is up to you.
Yes he does have and aftercare program.
He gave all the facts he didn't candy coat anything.
I would give Dr. O'Malley and excellent rating.
Don't know yet haven't had the surgery.
My first impression of Dr. Omalley was that he knew what he was doing and cared very much that his patience do well with this. He did make it clear that you can fail at this and there is no cure for obesity. His staff has just as much knowledge about the proccess as he does. He gets to the point and tells how things are and how you rlife as food will be. I really liked his aftercare, he said "if you are not going to come to every post op visit and excersize and do what I say, then don't even schedule a date for surgery." He explained that there are alot of risks with this, he said the biggest problem he had what that one woman's organs were on the wrong sides (what was on the left should have been on the right and what should have been on the right was on the left). He is a great doctor.
I have seen Dr. O'Malley twice, once in a general informational meeting and once for an individual consult. He is pleasant and professional. I felt confident that he knows what he is doing. Besides, he said I look younger than I am. He lays everything out for you including what your aftercare will be and seems very straight foreward.
11/23/01 My first meeting with Dr. O'Malley was in September 2001 and I found him to be very professional-which was fine with me! He met with a large group of us and explained the surgery and answered everyone's questions patiently and completely. This meeting lasted about 2 hours. I was able to book my surgery that day because I already had insurance approval. I had my lap RNY surgery on 11/1/01 and the experience was great. The staff at the hospital were incredible, I can't say enough about them! The only "complaint" that I have is that I ended up with a numbness in my left thigh above knee-which is not an uncommon occurrence and goes away in time. While I was in the hospital, Dr. O'Malley checked on me every day. My surgery/recovery has been extremely easy. I felt so good that I probably could have gone back to work two weeks after my surgery. I would rate Dr. O'Malley a 10 on the scale of 1-10. He's the best!
My first impression of Dr. O'Malley was great. He is a caring individual, who is very knowledgable about bariatric surgery. He was patient in explaining every aspect of the process, the up's and the down's. His office staff was wonderful. They helped out as much as possible, letting me know exactly what I needed to do, and have done. Dr. O'Malley let me know all about what would be happening to my body, and what types of diets I would be going through in my different stages of weight loss. He told me about the risks and complications. I have to admit they scared me, but this is a life altering change, and my lifestyle will have to change in order for me to maintain my health. To me surgical competence is more important, but when you find a surgeon that also has a good bedside manner, that is complete care.
Dr.O'Malley is somewhat shy (which I found quite endearing), very professional, and quite thorough. He is an excellent surgeon and his experience is extensive. I've come to like and admire him more and more as time goes on. He is caring, concerned and attentive.
His open scars are approximately 4 inches. From what I have been told it is due to his use of a newer stapling machine that needs only the smallest of openings to operate.
I would like future patients to be aware that they should bring in a list of questions when they see him, and expect that he will not only answer any and all of them, but take the time to explain from start to finish, the surgery and any and all information pertaining to the surgery that you should know.
He does use an NG tube during surgery, but it is removed before you awaken in recovery. He does use a drain, but that is removed before leaving the hospital. His open surgeries take approximately 1 hour (barring any complications of course). His laproscopic surgeries take about 3 hours.
Dr. O'Malley has been very good about providing patients with enough information regarding foods to eat so that they know from the start what to expect. As far as aftercare goes, he will see you in 10 days post-op, at the end of the 1st month, 2nd month, 6 month and then again at the 1 year mark. From there on, he will see you once a year. He has no structured aftercare program, but does have his newer patients consult with a nutritionist before surgery.
I would say that Dr. O'Malley's surgical competence shines. Since he is rather timid, his bedside manner is sweet, quiet. He's not real "cuddly," but I do think that's because he'd probably turn ten shades of red if anyone wanted to hug him. :)
I would rate him a definite 10 overall! That is because I have met countless patients at a support group I belong to and another that I run, and have only met 2 of his patients who have experienced problems... and even those patients swear this is the best thing they have ever done. The problems those two have had were related to some strange things going on in their bodies that are not the usual. One, her body parts were not where they are supposed to be. Another had her stoma open up so wide you could probably fit a golf ball through it. They are looking into that now. Otherwise his other patients don't seem to have had any problems related to the surgery at all.
My first impression of Dr. O'Malley was a very good one that has not changed and I am now 2 days away from being 9 weeks post-op and I have already lost 45 pounds. Everyone at Highland Hospital was very knowledgable about my surgery (laparoscopic RNY) and concerned about my pain control as well as keepin me free from infection. Before I had the surgery, Dr. O'Malley was very thorough in explaining the procedure to me from beginning to end. He even went as far as drawing a diagram of how my digestive system was at the time and how it would be post-op. I received extensive patient teaching during my hospital stay. Dr. O'Malley's office staff is also very knowledgable about the surgery and what steps should be taken before the surgery and what precautions to take after the surgery. I was provided with a different menu at each post-op visit and was able to ask any questions that I could possibly think of. I also called the office with questions between office visits. I had no complications during or after my surgery and I am very grateful to Dr. O'Malley for a job well done - before, during, and after. If I had to rate the "DOC" on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being most satisfied, Dr. O'Malley would definitely receive a 10+. I am a healthcare professional and I must admit, I was a bit nervous before my surgery especially having heard the "horror stories" regarding the surgery but I am so glad that I did not let that discourage me and neither should you!!!
