I was so pleased with my consultation with Dr. McCarty. I didn't know what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise. He was considerate and welcoming, taking his time with me. I knew when I left his office that this was the right thing for me to do. He went step by step through the procedure with me. He was very honest about risks of surgery, but he made me feel better when he told me about all of his successes.
I was really impressed with Mrs. Leverton. As usual people that I spoke to had something negative to say about her. My feeling is that each doctor is not for everyone. When my husband and I went for out first consultation grained we were there longer than we thought. We had to fill out all that wonderful background history and all that good stuff. The staff was very helpful in answering all my questions (all 10 pages worth). She was telling me all the dos and don’ts after the surgery.
BY THE WAY ANYONE WANTING THIS SURGERY AND YOU SMOKE GET PERPARED FOR THEN TO TELL YOU TO QUIT 6 WEEKS BEFORE AND 6 WEEKS AFTER!!!!!!!!!!! I think that is going to be the worse part of everything. I do know this clinic I am going to has 4 offices in Texas, Illinois, Michigan and 1 more I cant think of. If you want any addition information about her please e-mail me and I will help you to the best of my ability.

Well as you can see that I have changed surgeon. Dr Leverton was just not for me. I was really unsure about there facility. So I have chosen to go to Dr Mc Carty. He is a very wonderful man. He answered all my questions even if they were weird. He really seemed like he enjoys his job, which is to help people like you and me. I would recommend everyone to see him even if it is just for a second opinion and more than likely you will decide to have him as you surgeon.
I met with Dr. Leverton on 11/15/00. She seemed very young, but very knowledgable.
The BTC in Wylie, TX is brand new and all of
the staff were friendly and understanding.
Dr. Leverton and I went through the procedure, risks (1 in 800 die), and aftercare. I am concerned that she hasn't had years of experience doing this type of operation, only 15 procedures to date.
I believe that surgical competence is of
uptmost importance!
12/6/00 I met with Dr. Todd McCarty! He is going to be my surgeon. He has done over 100 WLS and is starting now to do LAP RNY.
I loved his office staff but didnt like having to wait an hour and a half for the DR. We only got to consult for about 30 minutes because he was due in surgery. Other than feeling alittle rushed, I'd highly recommend him for his experience, caring attitude regarding the sucess of WLS.
Now the battle with insurance starts!

i've got an appointment for monday the 16th...
i've had to call the office a couple of times; first, to find out what i could do to help the approval process, and second - i know it sounds silly, but i've been planning to go to austin for a year to get a tattoo, but i wanted to call to be sure it wouldn't have an effect on my surgery... both times, the girls were GREAT.
i'll update after the visit.
((10/16/00)) WHAT A GREAT VISIT! although i had to wait almost an hour, once i got in, i realized why i had to wait... Dr. McCarty truly acts like you're the only patient he has... he was/is an oncological surgeon (operates on people with cancer), he explained why/how he got into bariatric surgery... he explained everything - the risks, the procedure, the aftercare, everything... i feel so much better for having visited with him. he even gave me phone numbers of previous patients he had to call and get THEIR feedback! so, needless to say, i'm 100+% satisfied that this is the Dr. for me. now, all to do is wait for the insurance company to approve...
(one additional note - he explained the the National Health Institute has approved this surgery for anyone with a BMI over 35 with obesity-related health issues, and anyone over 40 without any issues. this is an important "fact-oid" to throw at your insurance company if they deny you.)
((10/29/00)) one additional note... i'm struggling with my company to get this surgery approved... sharon in Dr. McCarty's office is truly a champion!!! she's swamped, but when you get her on the phone, she truly tries to help....
((11/10/00)) by the way, sharon in Dr. McCarty's office has said that ANYONE who uses them who has any problems at the hospital with the nursing staff or care given shouldn't hesitate to call their office and let them know (while still in the hospital) - they will fix it ASAP.
((11/30/00)) i never followed-up on my entries for dr. mccarty. his office is going to be starting a support group in jan (good idea). Sharon made it possible for me to have this surgery, she just kept working on the ins. company from one side, and me from another.... in addition, dr. mccarty was very supportive. he's great!
I haven't had my consultation yet with my surgeon. I still have three days to go until the appointment. Why is the waiting so hard? I will update on Monday after my appt. with Dr. McCarty.
November 28 - I had my consultation with Dr. McCarty and he is just as warm, caring, and yet professional as everyone says. I was very impressed with how thorough he was in explaining EVERY aspect of this surgery to me. He even gave me lots of background information on himself, including how he got into doing this type of surgery. I feel very confident that I've made a very wise choice in choosing Dr. McCarty. I highly recommend him to anyone.
I have herd nothing but good things
about Dr. McCarty. I can wait until
My 1st visit. I will keep every one up-dated
10-9-00, today was the big day and the start of a new life. " I hope " I met with Dr. Todd McCarty today. He was very careing. He explained in detail every event that will take place in surgery. And after the surgery and what to expect. He is a wonderful person. I truly beleive that he understands that "fat" people do not want to be fat.
The office people were great, I call them they always do thier best to help me in any way they can.
Dr. McCarty is young and very nice man. I like the fact that he trusted my research and didn't tell me what i already knew. I got to ask questions without being made to feel stupid. He is very respectful to our plight.
He communicates by email with me the same day and doesn't consider my questions bothersome.
I like the most is he is a surgeon, oncology specialist so he is very skilled in surgery and etails. And my other regular doctors know him and trust him. the least i like is that he has only done about 100 open RNY and is just starting lap RNY Dec. 2000. I might be his first!!! He also doesn't have a aftercare program-but that may change with us!!
His staff is sweet but you have to stay on them. She forgot to call to tell me i was approved, she forgot to fax it, it took a week for the letter to get typed and mailed out (once it received at ins-it was the next day approval) so stay on them-sweetly.
he prefers not transecting but will if i understand the increased bleeding risks involved.
When I went for my first visit with Dr. McCarty I was rather scared and unsure of the surgery and after talking not only with him but his other patients that were in the waiting room, I was sure this was the right thing for me and I felt at ease with his knowlege and skill, all his staff have been most helpfull. Dr. McCarty has a wonderful assistant named Sharon who has been my lifeline, when every I have had questions she has always been there to answer them and not made me feel like she did not have time and I was calling about insignificant things. I would highly recommend him to anyone who was considering having this surgery done, he is located at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
I really liked him he was very friendly. He got right to the point, and asked me how much I knew and I was able to tell him that because of all my wonderful friends her on WLS I knew quite a bit. He went over all the risk for me and asked if I had any other questions. I told him know but that I wanted to get it scheduled today, because I wanted to be able to go back to teaching right after Christmas break. He scheduled me for surgerybefore I left his office. His nurse kept looking at him and tried to say something and he told her that he knew that they needed to wait on approvial but he did not feel like there would be any problems getting it approved. He told me that they never schedule surgery before approval, but I had already shared with him how I believed Go'd hand was in this and there would be absolutely no problem getting this approved.
Thanks to all of you who prayed for me today. It worked! Of course,I had no doubt because our God is an awesome God!!! Thank you Lord that you are in control!!
I will let you know as soon as I know anymore information. He was very blunt about the risk and told me that I was even at greater risk because of my BMI. I told him I understood and that still wanted the surgery. I knew so much information already that he talked more to my husband about explaining things to me. I think he is tops.
