Dr. Custer was awesome, that's the only way to describe him and his team. They were all so professional and friendly from the get go. From day one which was over an 8 month process they took care of me and made sure I was ready for the surgery to be completed safely. Which it was completed this past week and I am doing great. Im sure it's due to this great team of individuals that he has assembled. I love him and would recommend him and his team to any individual needing help. From nutrition, exercising, insurance, gen health anything that you could need his team will help you with. I thank them for giving me a new shot at having the second part of my life being more fun and active. Thanks again!!
My initial impression of Dr. Custer was that he was straight forward, professional and appeared to be very healthy himself. His presentation at the initial consult was thorough and he discussed the pros and cons of different types of bariatric surgeries. He patiently answered all of my questions regarding the surgeries in my personal follow-up with him. My surgery went very smoothly, so I believe he is a skilled surgeon as well.
Dr. Custer and the staff recognize the importance of after-care, stressing the importance of nutrition and exercise. Post-op visits are scheduled at 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, at 1 year, and yearly after.
Dr. Custer is very engaged in the pre-op and post op process and the success of his patients. He is encouraging but also candid during office visits. He has continued to educate me on the benefits, the risks and the responsibilties of the patient post-operatively.
My experience with Dr. Custer and this process has been very positive, and I would recommend that anyone contemplating bariatric surgery consider Dr. Custer as their surgeon.
Dr. Custer did my RNY a few months ago. Personally, I would not recommend him based soley on his toal lack of "bedside manner". The day of my surgery he walked into the pre-op room and did not even acknowledge me. Didn't even say hello. He looked at some paprework for several minutes and then without even looking up asked if I had any questions and that was it. Very impersonal and unfriendly. My surgery went well. I have no issues with his ability as a surgeon. However, after RNY you have 1 yr of follow up visits. Who wants to visit a doctor that barely spoke to you on the day of surgery? I am so thankful that Barix has other doctors you can see for follow ups because I have switched to another doctor for all my follow ups. Not that Dr. Custer even noticed.
I first met Dr. Custer when my wife was having her surgery and knew when I had mine he would be my surgeon of choice. The staff at Barix Clinics of Ohio is the best and are there to take care of you. Dr. Custer is very upfront and open with his patients and will guide you along the way but never force you to take a step. When I frist met him for the consultation he did a group presentation on the lapband and RNY procedures giving both the pros and cons of each. He never tried to sway you toward either as he indicated that it need to be your decission. When it was determioned I was a candidate he asked which procedure I wanted, after saying I wanted the RNY gastric bypass he asked if I wanted laproscopic or open. I told him my choice and we continued to discuss the procedure. During this time he did tend to lean toward the open. We, my wife and I, asked why and he proceded to explain why but still leaving the option up to me. In the end I decided to go along with his preference for me and know that it is the best choice I could have made. In my opinion Dr. Custer is the best Dr one could have. He is very competent as a surgeon and has the bedside manner to match.
My first impression was that he was blunt and honest, a no punches pulled kind of person. My impression hasn't changed much, I understand the bluntness and appreciate the honesty. His office staff is right on it, they kept me updated and informed through the entire process. Because he is an all business type of person, there is no connection building us, which I didn't know I would have liked to have. But I would not exchange his expertice for his friendship. He's got some of the best numbers/percentages in Columbus, I would recommend him to anyone. He is not extreme about aftercare, he expects you to use the tool as intended and lets you have it if you're not following the plan.
Dr. Custer is very pleasant caring man. He is straight forward and does truly believe is this process. He has so much information about the procedures that most questions are answered before you can ask and if not he will answer any and all concerns. His after care is sturctured to days on this and that you meet with the nutritionalist at every follow up appt. and they are available all the time to address concerns as well. I would highly recommend Dr. Custer and his team to anyone checking into this surgery.. on a scale of 1-10 10 easy .. I had the lap RNY
