Dr. Shawn Garber was my surgeon
I had my surgery on 6/5/ 07. The best thing I can say is, I woke up and thought " Hey what went wrong, I don't feel any pain, He must have decided he could not help me...but he did and I lost 175 lbs...it's been almost 3 years.
Dr. Garber was honest and up front. He told me from the get go that this was just a tool in my weight loss journey. I would have to work on a plan and stick to it. I follow all the rules, no caffen, no straws, no drinking with meals and walk... walk.. walk..
I watch people and think, why did they do this major surgery if they are not going to follow the advise given by Dr. Garber.
All these things make a difference from the start that keeps you on track.
Good luck to all who choose this path but listen to your doctor.... Dr. Garber and I partner shipped to changed my life and turning 60 soon it was about time...
I would like to see more detail information in the support groups such as rescipes, exercise that helps, any more sharing of concrete information.
I had my surgery in Nov 2004, My first impression of him was that he really cared. He has always looked at me as person and not just another patient. He addressed the risks of having surgery and made it very clear that it is just a tool. He made sure that I understood the aftercare and how I would need a structured program the rest of my life. Because I live so far away I let that get in the way and did not stay with the program. After 4 years of not seeing him he still has made me a priority. His office staff is awsome, very helpful and willing to answer any questions I may have. I hate the fact that his office is 6 hours away from me, but he has new online Seminars and services that makes it so easy for me to stay in touch now that I know he and his office staff is just a phone call or email away.
I just wanted to update and say thank you to Dr. Garber for changing my life. I will be forever his patient. He did the ROSE procedure for me and tightened up my pouch and I have reached my goal. He is always on the forefronts of new technology. Don't walk but run to Dr. garber to change your life. Dr. Garber changed my life. I thoroughly researched the surgery and found out that Dr. Garber is top notch trained. He trained with Dr. Wittgrove who operated on Carnie Wilson and he did an advanced laparoscopic surgery fellowship. His office staff is thorough and very courteous. He spent a great deal of time explaining the surgery to me. I had the lap gastric bypass and went home from the hospital in 3 days and back to work in 8 days. Dr. garber emphasizes aftercare and has a support group once a month. He has a great bedside manner. The only problem I had with Dr. Garber is that it took time to get a surgery date because he was very backed up but it was definitely worth the wait. Would love to chat with others interested in surgery or to be their angel. Don't walk but run to see Dr. Garber. Contact me anytime. Dr. Garber changed my life !!!!!!!
I first received Dr. Garber's name from my pediatrician and took his recommendation very highly. After a series of introductory and evaluatory appointments, Dr. Garber performed my gastric bypass surgery 4 months ago. It was the best experience I could have possibly dreamed of. His office was courteous, professional, and compassionate. From my first appointment, all the way to date, Dr. Garber and his staff have been particularly patient and answered all of my questions. He typically responds to emails within the hour and is incredibly accessible. rnrnDr. Garber's practice (The NY Bariatric Group) emphasizes a total care package. The surgery is only the beginning and is supplemented by a highly structured nutrition and exercise plan. When I was first considering surgery, I was wary of all the people that told me it would \"change my life\". Yet my new routine and follow up plan has really allowed me to make drastic changes in a short amount of time.rnrnDr. Garber regularly holds information sessions and support group meetings for new and post-op patients. If you are considering the surgery, I would urge to you attend one of these sessions and review his website to get the most information possible.rnrnOverall, I would give Dr. Garber an incredibly high rating as a surgeon. His calm and patient bedside manner is only matched by his immense qualifications and surgical competence!rnrnrnrn
hello, i had my first appt with dr. garber yesterday 10/23/08 and i was a nervous wreck because i had my surg. 05/2003 with another doctor and after the surg. its like the dr. and his office just didnt care anymore. the dr never showing up for appts most of the time and not caring so i was prepared for the worst. BUT!!!!!!! that is not what Dr. Garber is about, he explained what had to be done. i have a fistula and he gave me a solution to my problem instead of wondering what the heck i was to do with no doctors help. he is patient and understanding and a very thorough. he explained to me what no one else would. and i thank him for that. and his staff........... congrats they are amazing, friendly and a pleasure to deal with. thanks again for a great experience
Dr. Garber helped changed my life. He is the best doctor I have ever seen. He has a complete aftercare program with nutritionist, psychologist and even weekly support groups. Most surgeons only do them monthly. He is always available 24/7 especially via email. His office staff is also amazing. He has a state of the art office with its own endoscopy suite. He is also on the forefronts of new technology like stomaphyx and the Restore trial. At a recent support group meeting I was told he has done more than anyone in the world. If you are thinking about weight loss surgery or a revision definitely go see Dr. Garber you will be happy you did.
The following is based on my own personal experience with this surgeon:rnI thought that Dr. Garber was very informative & professional. His office staff was extremely nice & VERY helpful in all of my preliminary calls. He took the time to go over all aspects of having the surgery. The success rates, the possible complications, aftercare and the list of Dr's he requires you to see to get some preliminary testing done to assure your ok to go through with the surgery. At first I saw a surgeon who didn't even require any preliminary testing and I felt that to be inappropriate. Dr. Garber always kept asking if I had any questions after anything he explained and he answered all of my questions. Dr. Garber DIDN'T rush me through answering my questions... which was reassuring considering he did have other patients waiting be seen. <br> Make the most of your wait! At time there were several people in the waiting room that were post-op who shared a great amount of positive feedback about Dr. Garber and were more than willing to answer questions and help in any way possible. Many of the Post-op patients were extremely satisfied with him, the surgery, his bedside manners, and aftercare when I questioned them. He has a support group meeting each month which is great. I will keep you up to date when I find out for myself how his bedside manners are etc!rn********************************************rnJust wanted to report back: I am currently post-op & I'm so glad to inform you that Dr. Garber's is an extrememly caring surgeon. His bedside manners go Above & Beyond! His surgical competence is extraordinary. I trust him completely and would highly recommend using him for your surgery. He is truly a Doctor with compassion and always had reassuring words of encouragement to share when I was feeling scared. Dr. Garber is truly the best!
-This is my personal opinion of Dr. Garber - rnI really liked Dr. Garber. when I first met him, he answered almost all of my questions before I even asked. I like the fact that he has done over 2000 of lap RNY surgeries. His office is packed!!! I guess that comes with a great surgeon. Dr. Garber has an excellent aftercare program - I was impressed at how structured the follow up will be :) He fully discussed the benefits and risks of the surgery. He told me to call or email him with any questions that I may have after our consult. I did take advantage of emailing him and he emailed me back pretty quick - usually in a few hours. He requires quite a few pre op visits in order to be cleared for surgery. The office staff is friendly and try to keep things moving.rnrnStephanie - office manager at Dr Garber's office is amazing and a sweetheart :) She is SO helpful. She is organzed and KNOWS her stuff. rnrnSharon, The nutritionist is encouraging and supportive. rnrnDonna Franco, PA - is wonderful! rnrn
I liked Dr. Garber as soon as I met him, and like him more and more as time goes on.rnrnHis office staff is generally very helpful.rnrnThere is nothing I dislike about him, and his future patients should know he is warm, caring, down to earth, patient, and was very responsive to all my worried, anxious pre-op emails.rnrnHis feeling is that after RNY, we are lifetime partners. He has a support group once a month at Mercy hospital and you must adhere to his post-op appointment protocol.rnrnYes, he did address the risks of surgery.rnrnI would rate him the absolute best overall, and both his competence and bedside manner are great. My roomate in the hospital had pain med. complications which caused her uncontrolable vomiting, and Dr. Garber was either there or on the phone w/the nurses for 12 hours straight until she got better.rnrnHe's tops in my book!
