I found Dr. Shikora to be very professional and informative. The staff is very friendly and helpful. He is team orientated. You will greet all clinical staff at your hospital bed checking your outcome. His office staff is top notch. Was voted top surgeon two days after my surgery, talk about a great feeling. I have done fabulous; ahead of the class on healing and doing well. Have post op meetings can be scheduled at your convenience with other patients. The overall program is excellent. I highly recommend this hospital over others I have heard about.
I would rate Dr. Shikora an excellent surgeon. He was also easy to talk with and very patient. He took the time to go over the surgery in detail and answered all of my pre-op questions and was also very kind and supportive during my hospital stay. I found the program at Tufts New England Medical to be comprehensive and positive start to finish. I had a great experience with the program and with the entire staff and Dr. Shikora was wonderful.
My first impression with Dr Shikora was good he sounded like a detailed person and proved it when it came time for my surgery. spelled out all riskes involed before and after surgery this is why he stresses on taking advantage of there aftercare program, great bed side manners.
His office staff works well they sure can multi task... the are with you for the long haul they have a well structured program from Pre-op to Post-op and on.
Koodos to the OCC team at the New England Medical Center.
Great Job....
Dr. Shikora is the unique combination of being humble, yet immensely skilled and competent. When I first met with him, he described the procedure in detail and answered all of my questions. He went in to detail the risks and rewards with the surgery and spoke in terms that were comprehensive but not overly technical.
His staff (thanks again Lynne!) is truly dedicated to the patients, and are eager to go the extra mile to make sure that we are prepared and informed of the process as it leads up to your surgery date.
Dr. Shikora came in at least once a day while I was in the hospital post op and he was extremely encouraging and friendly.
I did not experience any complications at all.
I would highly recommend Dr. Shikora.
Dr Shikora was very professional and made sure I had a complete understanding of the risks and life changes involved with Gastric Bypass. The office staff is very organized and friendly. They made the process very user friendly. I chose NEMC because of Dr Shikora's reputation as a leaqder in laproscopic bypass. Also because of the total person treatment..medical, and behavior. I especially liked the exercise program through Dr Pino. He layed out a detailed program of light weights and pool walking for me. It has made a big difference in my endurance. I would rate the prograqm at New England medical as excellent.
My first impression of Dr. Shikora was that he was a very busy man. But he did take the time answer all of my questions that I had about the surgery and what I should expect etc. The office staff is very helpful and was always there when I needed my questions answered. There is nothing I didn't like about Dr. Shikora. He has a great personality and a wonderful 'bedside manner'. He even joked with me that I was a "skinny one". My surgery was over 2 years ago and I am sure that aftercare procedures and everything have been changed since then. I was given alot of information to read about the surgery, what to expect, what I could eat after at each different stage etc. I had classes that I had to attend to learn about my aftercare. Dr. Shikora didn't hide anything when he explained the surgery and the risks of surgery. It is a very important decision to make about whether to have the surgery or not. But my medical doctor told me that I was more at risk of dying because of my health then I would be of dying from the surgery. I was diabetic and it was not being controlled by medication and my next step was going to be having to go on insulin. I hate needles so I made the decision to have surgery. I was always tired, my back killed me from arthritis. I had bad reflux where I would wake up out of a sound sleep gasping for breath because I had stomach acid coming up into my esophagus. I was never able to walk the mall without having to stop to catch my breath after a few feet. I had no energy at all.
When I had my first visit with Dr. Shikora I was in awe of him. He completely knew his stuff and answered all my questions before I even had a chance to ask. I left my visit with him feeling good about the surgery, and I am the biggest baby in the world not to mention the biggest worry wart! He made me feel at ease as he told me about both the risks and rewards of this surgery. Two days before my surgery, I got a call from his secretary asking if it would be ok to move my surgery out one day. I was to be done on a Wednesday and now was moved to Thursday. I agreed and hung up the phone. My phone rang again immediately after I hung up. It was his secty. again, Dr. Shikora himself wanted to explain why the surgery was being moved. He told me that there were a group of surgeons in Germany that were extremely impressed with his techniques in the surgery and they wanted to view a surgery via satellite. He asked if I wanted to be that patient, they would only see the iside of my stomach not me on the table and they would not know my name. I agreed and felt privilleged that my surgeon was being studied by surgeons in Germany. He also had a great bedside manner. If you are considering this surgery and you are looking for a surgeon I strongly reccommend NEMC the entire staff are wonderful!
