As of this past Monday, it has been 8 years since I had a gastric bypass at NEMC, performed by Dr Scott Shikora. rnrnAll I can say is thank you to Dr Shikora for not only saving my life, but allowing me to learn what having a quality life is. I thought I knew, but before 10/19/98, I wasn't living, I was just existing. The whole experience was wonderful, from the initial appointment with Dr. Vogel, who walked me through the psychological issues that I'd be dealing with, to Dr Shikora who patiently explained the proceedure to me. rnrnI was the patient from hell and a complete pain in the ass, but the whole staff was wonderful.rnrnAll I can say is that if anyone has the opportunity to go to NEMC and deal with Dr Shikora's staff, than you're very, very lucky. He's one in a million.

Dr. Shikora is AMAZING. He is thorough and very nice. He made me feel so comfortable about my RNY bypass.

Although I was initially nervous, after meeting with him, I knew this was not only the best thing that could happen to me, but that he was the ONLY person who I wanted to do this procedure.

He's an amazingly talented man and I feel honored that he performed my surgery. My scars are so small hardly noticeable at all. Besides, I had no major pain and didn't even need to use any of the percocets post surgery.

Thank you Dr. Shikora for giving me a fresh start. I'm already down 38lbs just 5 weeks out of surgery. My hypertension is GONE, my GERD is GONE, Sleep Apnea is just about gone, and the type 2 Diabetes is GONE.

I have already recommended him to other friends and family members who are now eager to have him do their surgery.

I had a great experience with Dr. shikora. He can be a little intimidating initially, but after a few minutes of talking with him, I realized that he is just very precise and professional. I trusted him completely and felt very comfortable talking with him about my concerns. I would rate him and his staff a 10.

Very Proffesionall All the way through the process. The best staff in New England. He is considered a world renowned surgeon and anybody who gets him is extremely fortunate. If you are being banded Dr will not do it unless you are commited to aftercare. They have the best program I have heard about on this board. Dr Shikora is propably the top surgeon in this part of the country.. My MD told me if he neede laproscopic surgery and he was in europe he would fly to Boston and have Dr Shikora do the surgery. He is simply the best!!!!!!

He is a great surgeon and really takes time to explain things... When you are having any trouble just call and he always gets back to you and assures you of the situation. If you need to be seen he will see you.... Overall I have had a great doctor and could have asked for better......

I would rate Dr. Scott Shikora a Perfect 10...............

I first met Dr."H" in May of this year (1999). He reminded me of those two guys that I enjoyed so much in "Grumpy Old Men". hahaha! I liked the fact that he was older and considered to be an EXPERT in this field. He has a dry sense of humor(but, believe me, it IS there-he's very funny), and is very matter of fact.

I had prepared some questions before going, but after the video and my consultation, ALL the questions had been answered! I felt real foolish when he asked if I had any questions, and all I could do was smile and say "no".

His office staff is incredible! Vicki and Tammi are always soooo nice and helpful, even when they are extremely busy, which is the majority of the time. They go out of their way to not let you feel like you're "bothering" them.

He was recommended to me by a good friend of mine who is almost a year post-op, and she looks and feels GREAT! He is her doctor.

If surgical competence is what you're looking for vs. a Letterman, Murphy, or Carey type personality, in my opinion, Dr.Harberg is your man.

Dr. Shikora is wonderful and I highly recommend the NEMC program. Very comprehensive with excellent pre and post op follow up.

I felt comfortable with him. He was very knowledgable and answered all my questions. My impression changed a bit in that I discovered that he is a straight line do it now kind of person. There were times when he was almost too enthusiatic about me as a patient and more about the surgery itself. However, he was pleasant, upbeat and very competent. The office staff was friendly and moved things along. They tried to schedule appointments conveniently for me. Most of the aftercare is covered in Behavior Groups that are required and talking to the PA, the anesthesiologist and the nutritionist. Yes, the program is structured. I was told straight out about the risks and was given a sheet that had all the possible risks and the percentages that they occur nationally and then for Tufts. I would rate overall very favorable. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are great, but if I had to pick it would be competence. In this case, surgical competence was higher than bedside manner.
