Dr. Malhotra is wonderful. I can't say enough about him. I am very sad to learn that he is leaving PA and going to NY. His last day working in PA is Friday 7/16/04 so I was very lucky to have him as my surgeon.rnrnI needed to page him on the Sunday after my surgery and as soon as I hung up with the answering service 30 seconds later the phone rang and it was Dr. Malhotra to answer my questions.rnrnAll of the nurses were wonderful anything I needed they got for me.rnrn

From the very first time I met Dr. Malhotra, I knew he was going to be my inspiration for the rest of my life. I had my surgery done on June 15, 2004 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital. I was scheduled for if my memory is right 8:00 a.m., I just remember when I woke up that morning that I was having my surgery, I was so excited and did not have one drop of fear in me. My sister Donna & my wonderful friend Gina went with me and they as well were also amazed how excited I was to be going. When I was in the pre-op area, Dr. came to see me with a big smile on his face and I had one to give him right back and he told me he would see me in a little while. Next thing I know I was in my room with some more family there along with Dr. Malhotra. He told me all went well and I remember even though I was under the anesthesia just thanking him and asking him when he was coming back to see me. Well there he was the next day and at this time I was already sitting up in a chair. He walked in the room sat down and talked to me like he was more my friend than someone that probably just gave me some more time in my life having weighed 368 pounds. I was dozing on and off since I think I still had some anesthesia in my system. I remember with a smile of course him saying I will see you tomorrow. I had my camera with me and made my sister take a picture of us one day post-op, (wish they would put it on here just to see by the looks in our face that we were both proud of what was accomplished one day prior)..he came in the next day and again sat and talked to me, we even talked about things not related to the surgery. The next day he came in and removed my drain and told me I could go home. He then said I am on call this weekend and please call me with any problem no matter how small it is. My brother came and picked me up on Friday, and guess where I was Sunday at the Viewmont Mall walking around. I thank god every day what a great recovery I had and how great I look, (at least I think I do). I then had my first post-op visit with him and he told me he was leaving the area. I was really upset, but obviously he was going to make other people happy just like he made me. Dr. Malhotra is the greatest man in the world in my eyes.

What was your first impression of him/her?rno (a) Honestly, my first impression of Dr. Malhotra was such a good one, he was a very calm and knowledgeable professional. rnrnHow did your impression change over time?rno (a) No, if anything I am so grateful to have such a surgeon and staff covering/handling my pre-operation and post-operation care. rnrnHow would you describe his/her office staff? rno (a) His staff was very courteous, patient and concerned (Bonnie the nurse stayed on the phone with me 20 just to give directions to the office) rnrnWhat did you like least about him/her?rno (a) I guess the least thing I like about his office is the distance from my home (But the service is well worth it)rnrnWhat should future patients know about him/her?rno (a) That he and his staff are truly concerned with each of their patients needs, fears concerning surgery, and personal problems that would affect them from living a healthy life. rnHow much does he/she emphasize aftercare?rno (a) Both Bonnie and Evelyn (Dr. Malhotra’s nurses) strongly emphasized the importance of aftercare, pre-operation meetings, post-operation meetings and dietary needs/guideline prior and post-op. rnrnDoes he/she have a structured aftercare program?rno (a) Dr. Malhotra does have a structured aftercare program which included support meeting and doctor appointments to discuss any concerns that I have had. rnrnHow did he/she address the risks of surgery?rno (a) Both the staff and Dr. Malhotra were very honest about what complications can occur for the surgery and whether I was a good candidate for the surgery and what I could expect after the surgery. rnrnHow would you rate him/her overall?rno (a) Dr. Malhotra: Excellent!rno (b) His Staff: Excellent!rno (c) His Facilities: Excellent!rnrnWhich is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great?rno Both surgical competence and bedside manner were important to me because it had something to do with my health and recovery; in which both Dr. Malhotra and the Long Island Jewish Surgical Staff did an outstanding job.

This was my second consultation, I was not at all impressed with the first surgeon I met with. However from the first time I walked into Dr.Malhotra's office I felt like I was going to be well taken care of. I work in healthcare and tend to be critical and in the case of WLS, I am being even more critical because this is my life! Dr. Malhotra is very compassionate, caring and extremely knowledgeable of WLS. He contacted my primary doctor the same day! On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the absolute best I would give Dr.Malhotra and his staff a 10 all the way!! To me surgical competence is much more important than bedside manner, with Dr. Malhotra his surgical competence and bedside manner are both amazing!! I felt completely comfortable with him and how he treated me(I was not embarassed at all!) He explained everything completely and fully to me, the good and the bad! He was not at all judgemental as far as the lap band versus gastric bypass which I also appreciate! I have NOTHING negative to say about him....sorry!!

Gentlemen;
I am writing this letter to commend the work and dedication of the entire staff at your center. I have been mightily impressed by the caring and professionalism displayed by Doctors Malholtra, Emily Marcus, Stein, and Doctor Saperstein since my first consultation. The staff, from the Bariatric Nurse coordinator (Emelda Forrester) to the receptionist and clerical staff have treated me with courtesy and kindness.
I knew from my very first experiences with the staff, that my surgical outcome would be a good one.
The planning for the surgery was meticulous and the pre-operative testing exhaustive and extensive. I felt calm and confident at the time of my surgery simply because I was aware that every precaution for a positive outcome had been taken.
The operation was indeed successful and without any complications. I attribute the success completely to the pre-operative procedures and the care given by the entire staff.
I cannot tell you how comforting it has been to know that I have a team such as that at the Long Island Jewish Center for Weight Management to continue to monitor my progress.
My medical complications seem to be becoming much more manageable since my surgery and the fact that there are support group meetings has reinforced the progress that I have achieved thus far.
Without the help of the staff at Long Island Jewish, I would not have had the confidence to undergo the surgery. I had previously had a consultation at the office of Dr. Gadaleta, however the atmosphere in his office did NOT inspire the confidence that I feel each and every time I visit Long Island Jewish. I feel that you have gathered caring, competent professionals, who treat each patient as individuals.
Although I was a surgery candidate and I have been able to take advantage of the procedure, I would also have been willing to undergo the non- surgical program simply because I truly believe that it would have been more successful than previous programs (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, L.A. Weight Loss, etc.).
Thank you for the new lease on life that your staff has initiated for me!
Respectfully,
Marion I. Smith

Dr Malhotra has a very calming and professional manner. he knows how to put your mind at ease and will spend as much time necessary to answer questions.
He helped to make the entire ordeal go very smoothly and he is a strong beleiver in after care and constant followup
I give him two thumbs up!!!! I find that, in a surgeon, bedside manner is just as important to me as clinical expertise and I am pleased to give Dr Malhotra an A+ in both areas!!
Way to go!!!

Dr. Malhotra made me feel very comfortable at our first meeting. I had done a lot of fact finding on the internet and through conversations with other WLS individuals from my workplace. Dr. Malhotra let me say what I knew without embarassing me and we had a conversation which I believe has honestly never happened in all my doctor's appointments. Even when I see him around the hospital he always takes a moment to say hello. Everyone in his office is inviting, always willing to go the extra mile and never running out of patience when you have one question after the other, one situation after the other. I feel I have been blessed not only with a tool for weight loss but also with new people in my life. I know that immediately following surgery, I will probably hate the whole office including the gentlemen who cleans it for the way I feel but right now there is no bad experience.

First off the meeting with the Md was great I have only meth with him once and he totally made me feel at ease about the surgery. The office staff at the Ceter for weight loss at NS LIJ are the best around. The secraterys energy is the welcoming start to yor experence. The nurse coorinators advice and help with every aspect of the pre sugical testing, the nutionist, and the psycologisist, the exercsise phsyologist, I can only say awesome, awesome, and awesome. The Md is a straight forward and said that I will be out of bed asap to walk around and to begin the healing process. The after care support is going to be great. Everyone from the office that I have come in contact with said they will be there that day after surgery to see me and to help in the recovery process.
