Dr. Brolin performed my surgery in 1998. Although the surgery went fine, his bedside manner left much to be desired. Post surgery nutritional planning follow up was never mentioned. I recently visited his office to discuss the possbility of revision surgery. Although his front office staff was very nice, I found his bedside manner the same. When I tried to get information on increased risks of revision surgery and success rates he changed the numbers from one visit to the next (for example, the percentage of risk of a gastrointestinal leak - which he said can be lethal or result in a 3 month hospital stay - changed from a 10% risk of occurence on the first vistit to a 20+% risk on the second visit). I felt I had to work very hard to get the information I needed to make a well informed decision about having surgery. I also had a visit with his nutritionist. She met with me for 15 minutes, seemed rather uninterested in my concerns and simply gave me a sheet of a paper with a food plan I am sure she gives every other patient that walks through her door. She did not mention exercise at all. I have decided that, although he is a pioneer in bariatrics and a skilled surgeon, I will not be going back to him or his nutritionist. Thankfully, I live in an area with many doctors/surgeons to choos from.

Although there are resources available within the office, I was not provided with instructions for diet and such for my first week when I was released from the hospital.

Dr. Brolin is a competent and capable surgeon. Any lesser of a surgeon would not have been able to handle my complications with ease. I would recommend his services without hesistation.

Had my first consultation with Dr. Brolin on December 5th. His office staff was wonderful, and very caring. My appointment lasted over 2 hours, and I never once felt rushed. They compassionately answered every question we had, no matter how stupid I thought it was. I found Dr. Brolin to be very nice, and thorough, and I got the impression that he truly cares about his patients-each one individually. Although I am still in the process of making my decision, I have started to follow the new lifestyle program that the nutritionist shared with me during my visit. Something that I was particularly impressed with was the follow up care they provide. I know that if I choose Dr. Brolin and his staff, I will have the follow up support that I will need long term to be a successful patient. That in itself, really comforts me because I know that I will not be alone on this journey. I have a caring, committed support team that will walk through it with me.

I met with Dr. Brolin of NJ Bariatrics and he took the time to answer all three pages of questions regarding Gastric ByPass Surgery, then asked if I had anymore questions. He never laughed or acted annoyed at any of my questions. That left an impression with me. I was impressed with his knowledge and felt very comfortable that I would be in excellent hands. So I began the pre-surgery insurance requirements and approximately six months later set my surgery date. I must say that Dr. Brolin’s office is excellent to work with and my surgery was approved without any hassle, which is due to the talented, completely thorough, Eleanor, who handled my insurance approval. Eleanor was able to intercept a pending denial due to additional weight history they needed. (Were they kidding me?) I have pictures to prove history, but my GYN came through for me and no time was lost.rnrnMy surgery was November 29, 2007, and it went very well. I had a minor surface infection develop, which I was told is always a possibility with any surgery. Dr. Brolin and his team (Dr. Gandhi & Dr. Patel) took excellent care of me. We discovered the infection when I was at home and frantically called the doctor’s service at 5:30 am. I received a call back literally 5 mins later and was asked to come into Princeton’s ER. A little while later, all three doctors came to look at the infection, cleaned it, and an CAT Scan was ordered to be on the safe side, confirming what Dr. Brolin already knew: this was only a surface wound. They set me up with home nursing care. I had a phenomenal nurse, Ben Mango, which allowed me to heal extremely well. rnrnI mention this infection because of how well I was taken care of. In life, stuff happens with no body to blame or find fault in. However, it’s how we handle the “stuff” that provides a true testament of the people we are. In this case it demonstrated how caring, thoughtful, diligent, and quickly Dr. Brolin and his team responded. I would not have wanted to be under anyone else’s care.rnrnNow, almost four months post-op, I have lost 107 lbs. This decision was the best thing I could have ever done in my life and worth every challenge.rn

My initial impression of Dr. Brolin was formed when I saw him conduct a seminar at the Hyatt Hotel near Princeton. I was struck not only by his clear presentation of gastric bypass surgery but also by the members of his staff; they all made a good impression. When I saw him for my first appointment, I thought he was a bit standoffish, and he did speak frankly about the risks of the surgery. As I have gotten to know him over the last four years, I realize how caring and concerned he is about his patients. When I went for the surgery in April 2004, I weighed 325 pounds, having lost 10 pounds in the previous three months, despite feeling the need to have many \"last suppers.\" My stay at the Princeton Medical Center lasted three days and two nights, and I was treated well there. A month or two later, I began having problems vomiting that didn't stop. I went to the emergency room at Princeton twice, and the second time they kept me there overnight and performed an endoscopy the next day. They diagnosed and treated a stricture, a too-tight connection between the smaller pouch and the intestine. It was dilated twice, and now it works like a charm. Dr. Brolin and/or one of his associates were involved in both visits to the emergency room. Eventually I lost 140 pounds and I am very pleased with the outcome. Currently, I take no blood pressure medication, when previously I took two different kinds. I am in good health, and I go every six months to see Dr. Brolin, whose personality seems warmer to me now. I think he is a highly competent surgeon and doctor.

Dr. Brolin was highly recommended to me by a number of people. He is a very skilled doctor and has lots of experience. I heard he has done almost 3000 gastric surgeries. He is very patient. He explains the procedure very well. He seems to me to be the kind of man you want your doctor to be. He is so experienced. You can tell by talking with him. He has a large staff of people that assist him in explaining the procedure and a dietary person to help you with the eating restrictions after the operation. The office staff is warm and friendly and are very helpful in general. I found that his staff took over the insurance process and has done very very well in helping us with approvals.rnrni have many health problems...too many to mention. I fell this is a necessary operation and I am very confident after seeing the operation at New Jersey Bariatrics that I am in good hands.
