My first impression of Dr. Schauer was that he CARES about his patients; he wants the best outcome and takes the time to go over all aspects of the surgery, the good the bad and the potential ugly! rnThe after care program includes checkups over the next 3 years after surgery, support groups and you have at your finger tips nutritionist and physiologist if they are needed. rnDr. Shauer is located in Cleveland, Ohio. I am traveling more than 600 miles from Iowa to have him do my surgery that is how convinced I am that HE is the best surgeon for me! rn
My first impression of Dr Schauer was that he was very informative. The office staff is great they work together very well and stay on top of what they need to, to make this journey go as smooth as possible. I work for the Cleveland Clinic and even if I didn't I would have chosen this as my facility. The BMI is extremely easy to get to and appointment scheduling was very easy.rnrnMy impression of Dr Schauer has changed now that I am post op. Wow! He really made me feel comfortable and the fellow doctors and nurses that he has working for him have been amazing. i met a nurse name Sheron, what a freat lady! She talked to my family and re assured me. She even gave me her number to call her at home. There were numerous doctors in my surgery and all of them came to visit me just to say hi. This was extremely impressive! They didn'y just act like they cared they really did/rnrnI am so thankful for Dr Schauer and his staff. From nutrition to surgery to my stay in the hospital even down to scheduling. rnrn
First impression was not good. However, after processing the experience for a few days, there were extenuating circumstances. It was late in the day. I had driven from Columbus area to Cleveland at 7:45AM, had Binge Eating Group Therapy at 11AM, met with Psychologist at 1PM, went into exam room to see surgeon at 2:20PM, waited until 5:30PM to see him. rnrnI was tired, stressed, hungry and he gave me totally new information that I didn't expect and wasn't prepared for: my surgery would need to be a two step affair... the sleeve followed by the complete gastric bypass after the weight loss plateau is reached following the sleeve procedure.rnrnHis bedside manner was a little abrupt, and he didn't seem able to understand my emotions in the moment.rnrnSo, my impression has modified. I know he is a world renowned talent and look forward to having him do the procedure.rnrnHis assistant is a little full of herself. She is a bariatric patient, having lost all her weight and has had many cosmetic procedures. You'd never know she was ever obese. But her demeanor is a little condesending.rnrnFuture patients should know that he is maybe the best surgeon available anywhere.rnrnFuture patients should know that the Cleveland Clinic program, in general, prepares you for the change in your life. Allow several months to pass all the departments before the event: Internal Medicine, Nutrician, Psychology and the Surgeon.rnrnThe Cleveland Clinic program is a lifelong support structure. Monthly support group meetings are held. An RN is in attendence.rnrnRisks were made very clear, a no 'blue sky' approach.rnrn
On 10/19/06, I met with Dr. Schauer. I liked the way he explained everything to me. He was kind, patient and ready to answer any questions I had. His staff is great, as well as knowledgeable. There is an aftercare program run by the staff. The doctor went over all the risks. Prior to seeing the doctor. I met with one of his assistants. He also went over the risk. I would rate Dr. Schauer a 10. rnI prefer to have a surgical competent doctor first of all, however, if his bedside manner were lacking. I would not feel comfortable with him. So I guess I would have to say both.
Dr. Schauer is kind, soft spoken and a good listener. Beams with self confidence without being grandiose. My first and number one priority was surgical competence when looking for a surgeon. I was wanting to have the Lap RNY but was afraid because of multiple surgeries that it would end up being open. But with his extensive talent and experience I got my wish. After my surgery was over he came out to speak with my husband and daughter.rnHe could have easily just picked up the phone. But that's not in his nature. We drove two hours to see him. And stayed at a Hotel on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic. Everyone went out of there way to be helpful in my journey.
Dr. Schauer was the first physician that didn't make me feel ashamed that I had failed at losing the weight. He was the first physician that gave me hope that I could achieve a better, healthier life. His manner is soft spoken, professional, allows for questions. He also doesn't \"gloss over\" anything. He is honest. The staff that works there is amazing. His office is in the Cleveland Clinic hospital. Wait for appts. is minimal. The staff is efficient and knowledgeable. Nutrition and psychology is located there. You can schedule all your appts. in one day if need be. The after program is very structured. I follow up with nutrition and psychology. I started with them pre-op. Psychology helped me identify issues that would have held me back postop. I feel more encouraged that I am continuing with their care. Dr. Schauer discussed thoroughly all risks and potential adverse outcomes. Cleveland Clinic being a teaching facility, many times a Fellow (Dr. in training) will see you first. I find this so helpful. They are very thorough. Also, the Cleveland Clinic utilizes an electronic chart. So, anywhere that I go within the system, they can access my full record. I would rate Dr. Schauer very highly. I am only 10 days postop, but everything so far has been wonderful. I think surgical competence is much better than bedside. If you can get both, then you are that much more lucky. I am an R.N., so competence to me should be chosen over bedside. But if you are looking for a surgeon with both, then Dr. Schauer is the one for you.
I have complete confidence that Dr. Schauer is the best. I've heard his patients and former patients talk, and they back up this thought. If I am nervous about anything about my surgery, I'm NOT nervous about Dr. Schauer's capabilities. He is kind, caring and very concerned with his patient's knowledge of the surgery and after-effects and also included my husband in our first visit.
