Dr. Schauer saved my life. I was 473# had sleep apnea, high blood pressure and could not walk for long periods of time. He was at UPMC in Pittsburgh PA, when I consulted with him. My main concern being my morbid obesity. I asked if he'd lost patients my size and he said yes. But they had contributing health issues. Another concern was infection and wanted laproscopic surgery. He was so caring and patient. I had my RNY done Lap in 2 stages due to my size and amount of fat and previous scar tissue. I cried when he moved to Cleveland.
Dr. Schauer has gone above and beyond to work with me and my schedule as an out of town patient. His surgical team, including Dr. Dua, is fabulous. The whole team remembers me every time I walk in the office and is always kind, encouraging and understanding of what it's like to be obese. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Schauer and his team for the gift that they've given me; my health. Dr. Schauer's surgical competence is off the chart, as well as his bedside manner. My only complaint with my RNY experience, (which Dr. Schauer had nothing to do with) is that I was unable to be placed on the Bariatric floor post op. I suppose the reason was good though, it was because I was a very low-risk bariatric patient! Thanks Dr. Schauer and Dr. Dua!

Phil Schauer is one of the best surgeons in the Bariatric world! He is kind, educated, and willing to stand up for his patients. He TRULY cares about our health, not money.
The only reason I stopped going for follow ups was because of Dr. Cooper. She was insensitive, almost to the point of rude. Some of the comments she made went against what Dr. Schauer had said. She needs to get on the same page as the rest of the team. She is the one who turned me off from returning for follow ups.
Dr. Rogula is also a wonderful doctor in the practice. He also has a tremendous bedside manner and very friendly and kind. He assisted Dr. Schauer in my surgery (he was a fellow back then). If you have him, you'll be happy as well!

Gastric Bypass surgery is a big decision. Before surgery I had concerns about what I would be able to eat, how my life would change, how my changes would effect me at work and at home, and so on. What I did not have to worry about was my surgeon. The first time I met him, I immediately got the feeling that this guy really knew what he was doing. He was confident, knowledgeable, and genuine.
I'd done my research before I met him and knew he had a great reputation and tons of experience. I knew the Cleveland Clinic was THE place to go for bariatric surgery if you wanted it done right. I know, that sounds like a lot of hype, doesn't it? But seriously, Dr. Schauer and the Cleveland Clinic lived up to their reputations. I was confident going into the surgery. Dr. Schauer and the Cleveland Clinic took excellent care of me. And the results have been wonderful.
The nurses and nutritionists were knowledgeable and always helpful -- before and after surgery. And the literature! Oh my gosh -- if it was important, they gave you flyers and fact sheets and directions. And not just once. If it was important you got the handouts 3 or 4 times. Kind of funny, but they were really serious about making sure you got the information you needed to take care of yourself. From the introductory seminar (when I first learned about the surgery options) to the monthly support groups where I got to share my success, I felt supported and part of a well-coordinated, organized and cohesive program. It was great.
The one caveat I have is that the doctor who does the group follow-up appointments (Karen Cooper) is pretty bad. She doesn't listen to the patients, makes unprofessional and rude remarks about the nutritionists, and gives out incorrect information that is out-of-sync with everyone else on the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute team (and directly in conflict with what Dr. Schauer told me). But you can avoid her entirely and set up a post-op appointment one-on-one with Dr. Schauer. So don't let one rotten apple spoil the barrel.
I would recommend Dr. Schauer and the Cleveland Clinic to anyone and everyone considering bariatric surgery.

I am very greatful for having the doctor for my sugery, Dr. Schauer and all the other Drs. that assisted him. I am glad that i did not get the surgery that i wanted, but Dr. Schauer gave me the surgery that he thought was best for me.
That made him a very special and important person in my eyesight, because he didn't give me what I wanted, but what was the best thing for me. So, I got the lap band with plication.
You are a very good and wonderful, kind man. Thank you Dr. Schauer......I am doing really good

What can I say!? Dr. Philip Schauer is one amazing surgeon! From the moment I met him, I knew I was at the right place and with the right surgeon. He is kind and caring. He listens and is honest with his approach. Dr. Schauer is a very busy man, but always takes the time to answer any questions and address any concerns. My surgery was a HUGE success with absolutely NO complications. My scars are TINY and literally within 2 weeks post op I was eating solids and officially on the LOSERS BENCH! The Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic is one of the most amazing facilities I've ever been to and they have a GREAT leader in Dr. Schauer! I encourage EVERYONE who is seeking WLS to see Dr. Schauer.

I was originally assigned Dr. Brethauer to be my surgeon, but as Tuesday was my only day off for appointments, I was then assigned to Dr. Schauer, whose clinic day is Tuesday. The first visit was rather rushed because he was over 2 hours behind in his appointments. He and his nurse, Jim Morris, apologized for the long wait, citing unavoidable delays. It was cursory, going over general details. My second visit went much more smoothly. I felt my questions were answered honestly and to my satisfaction. He leaned in close and kept eye contact with me the entire time. He listened to my questions and didn't rush in his responses.
The staff at the Cleveland Clinic have treated me so well. My psychologist, Dr. Heinberg, and my dietitian, Lauren Sullivan, are the greatest! They answer my frequent email questions in a friendly and supportive manner. The office staff, schedulers, patient representatives make an outstanding team. I am very fortunate to have the entire team behind me and on the same page in regards to my treatment.
Make sure you save plenty of time for your appointments, as medical and surgeon visits can involve a long wait. Other than that, I love it!
