I chose to have Dr. Le Port do my surgery in
California. He was very efficiant and thorough.
I especially like his staff. They were patient,
kind, and understanding when I was investigating
having surgery. Answered all my questions. I
think Dr. Le Port's office did everything they
could to insure I knew what I was preparing to
do and made sure I was as risk free as possible
before doing the surgery. The only thing I
wish is that there was a support group in my
local area. I understand Alaska is removed
from the rest of the world, but we need friends
too!
My experience with Dr. Le Port was completely positive. Since I was from out of state, I made all my contacts and arraangements by phone with Lilah. She is the most patient and helpful person you could ever want. After taking extensive information from me on the phone, she wrote up the report to submit to my insurance company, and in less than 2 weeks, I was approved. All of my pre op tests and appointments were scheduled in advance so that when we arrived, all was ready. Any questions were answered by the Dr. or Lilah. My husband was with me, and was welcomed by all.Even after being home, Lilah has called just to see how I am doing.
Will update when I have met with him on 10/29/99.
Update: I have met with Dr. LePort once. He is friendly and personable. He is also very stern and serious about the complications and the fact that this is a tool, not a miracle cure. He has a wonderful support group that meets every week. I think that's very important. I've heard nothing but good things about Dr. LePort, in regards to his competence and bedside manner.
Update 1/31/00: Dr. LePort has been wonderful with regards to post-op care. He is very concerned about his patients in the weeks after the surgery. I am grateful to have a doctor who cares as much as he does.
A little nervous about meeting him, but that proved to be a false feeling. He is the most kind and empathetic surgeon I've ever had. He continues his after care for as long as you need. He's always just a phone call away... and yes he does take all of his calls. My insurance company stated that his letter of recommendation was the best that they'd ever seen and approved me within 24 hrs.
My insurance did not cover his full fee, however when my bill came it had over $2,000 scratched over with the words "Surgery paid". This is far above and beyond my wildest dreams.
He has aftercare meetings weekly, although I will admit to not being at one yet. That is my fault do to time constrictions.
I would recommend him to my own family, which I have already done.
I had no complications...including my regular physician who assisted told me that I'd only lost 10 cc's of blood for the entire surgery. My gallbladder was removed at that time also. My scar? It is as thin as you can get!
Dr. LePort and his staff are very encouraging and accommodating. When I decided to have this surgery, I had a deadline for this year, as we have a paid-for cruise early next year. Both Dr. LePort and his staff worked to get me approved and into surgery before my deadline date so I'd have six weeks post-op before my cruise. My husband came with me to my initial visit with Dr. LePort, and we were both given all the risks and complications of this surgery. Everything was explained well (and we'd done our homework, using this site as well) without any unrealistic promises or scare tactics.
I have not meet him personally, however have
heard wonderful things about him. The
support group meetings are fantastic and I'd
recommend them to anyone looking into wls.
There are great examples of all stages of the
surgery. Even people that had the surgery
over 4 years ago - now that's an inspiration!
I meet Dr. Le Port on 11/11 so will update
more then.
Update: My appointment on 11/11 got changed to 11/12
due to an emergency. When I got to Dr. Le Port's
office today, I was told I needed to go over
to the other office due to another "emergency."
My appointment was at 11:15 am and I was seen
at 1:00 pm. I realize that this wasn't planned
however, couldn't help but be annoyed. The
staff was very accommodating and when I finally
met with Dr. Le Port I was very impressed.
I feel as if I'm in very capable hands.
