Mathew Rawlins Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
My first impression was at Dr Rawlins/Dr Bright's very first seminar on Gastric Bypass Surgery. My husband and I were both very impressed. So much so, I scheduled my first appointment. After my appointment, my impression only grew fonder. I talked to Carol one of his staff members and she was so very helpful as were the other members. I don't think I've ever felt so welcome as I did on my first appointment. I would highly recommend either Dr Rawlins or Dr Bright. They both have such wonderful bedside manners. They have a very good aftercare program I'm still pre-op at this point. The risks were discussed at the seminar as well as during my first appointment. If I rate Dr Rawlins, I would use a 1-10 scale and give him a 100!
I was very impressed by Dr. Rawlins. He is young, but I immediatly felt comfortable with him. He is friendly, positive, knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and thorough. We met for an hour and 15 minutes and I left feeling very good about my decision and very positive about the experience.
The staff was very friendly and caring, and I never felt anyone was looking down there nose at me for being fat. This is not always true as most of you know. I am having a little trouble with the insurance referral person right now, but feel sure that we can resolve that issue soon.
Dr Rawlins and Dr Bright seem to have a very good program. It includes a 5 year follow up program which kind of surprised me. When I asked him about it he very bluntly told me that they like to keep in touch not only for professional reasons, and follow up care, but because they get to know and like their patients and like to keep up. That made me feel very good.
He explained all the risks of surgery and also all the benefits. As with any surgery there are risks, and I have never had problems before so feel sure I won't this time, but I feel confident that if there are problems, Drs Rawlins and Bright can handle them.
Don't know what his bedside manner is, hope to find out soon, but if it is even half of what his office manner is it will be great.
Have no questions about his surgical competence. I am sure he would not be practicing at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane if he wasn't great.
10/08- Dr Rawlins was wonderful. Very nice, personable, and seems to care about his patients. The office staff was really nice and helpful. I hope they do their job in getting insurance approval. Dr Rawlins went over the procedure step by step and answered most of my questions before I had a chance to answer them. He wants me to meet with their nutritionist for after care, but I will also be enrolled in a weight management program through Group Health (mandatory in order to be approved).
10/20 - Dr Rawlins has really gone out of his way to help me. He personally called me yesterday to let me know that I was denied and that he was going to write an appeal right away. I was approved today! What a guy! DeNae... the Pre-approval QUEEN was just awesome. She answered all my phone calls, was very nice and was tremendously helpful!
11/12 - I went to see Dr Rawlins today after visiting with Chrystal, my nutritionist. (She was a hoot, very funny and informative.) I think that Dr Rawlins and Dr Bright are the only two surgeons in Spokane that have an "after the fact" program. They are really trying hard to pull one together that will pass the standards that Group Health is looking for in a post op weight management program. Anything has to be better than the once a week phone calls that I paid Group Health $725 for. Anyway.. he is soooo sweet, so empathetic to obese people. He answered all of my questions and made me feel totally better about my anxiety. I also met a nurse of his who is planning on having it done after the first of the year and it made me feel really good that after 5 years of working in this area she feels confident of the surgery, its effects, and the low risk compared to being obese. He is truly awesome! OH.. and the other people there are great too. His office staff gets an A+++ for all of their kindness and help!<p>
12/12. Well here I am 2.5 weeks post op and I love Dr. Rawlins. NOT IN LOVE MIND YA! I just love him. He is a dear, sweet man. He has been attentive, caring, sensitive and empathetic to me through this whole process so far and I would highly recommend him to anyone. I would rate him a 10 out of ten. He is competent, emphasizes a great deal of aftercare with his "in office" nutritionist, and his bedside manner is outstanding. His office staff and nurse Connie are very caring, have called me to check up on me, and are completely there for their patients. They have treated me with the utmost dignity and respect and are very encouraging. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about any of them.
I was so very impressed with Dr. Rawlins after our first meeting. He is a very kind person.
Everyone in the office is very kind.
You will be treated as a worthy person, not as just another fat person.
He feels that it is very important.
yes, follows are very important.
We discussed all possible risks, even the risk of not having the surgery.
10+
Dr. Rawlins is a very nice man, he seemed like he cared a lot about me. He says he has done only 45 Open RNY on his own, he has been working with Dr. Bright in Spokane. They assist one another with all surgeries. I have only met with him the one time, he answered all of my questions, but after using this site I did not have a whole lot, but my mother felt much more at ease about the entire idea after speaking with him.
His office staff that I have dealt with have been very nice and helpful. I went in with a full approval from my insurance company so it went much smoother then I had anticipated after reading the stories of others.
I really liked the fact that he was so pleasant and was very tactful with my feelings. He is extremely young, but very nice.
I think others should be willing to give him a try. I will keep you all posted regarding his bedside manner later.
He has a structured aftercare program which I should be getting in the mail within the next day or two. I meet with the nutrition specialist prior to surgery and after surgery. He addressed the risks well, he has not had any complications as of yet. Lets keep our fingers crossed that I am not the first one. Overall he is a nice guy and I am looking forward to him seeing "a lot less" of me. :)
