Julio Teixeira Bariatric Surgeon M.D.
My first impression of my surgeon was that he is a very understanding of the problems that obese people face. My impression of him from the beginning did not change at all over time, I simply just noticed how he is genuinely concerned about his patients. Anybody considering seeing him for surgery should know that they are making an excellent choice by choosing him. He makes sure that you are dedicated to attending his aftercare program, which includes regular checkups, labs, meetings with the dietitian and many various other things that are vital to success after surgery. He fully address' all the risks involved with surgery and makes sure you are aware of the changes that must be made after surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Teixeira
He is very nice and sweet guy. My impression of him has never changed. All of his staffed are very helpful especially the Nurse Practitioner and the Nutritionists. He emphasizes aftercare very much so and he does have a structured aftercare program. There is also an excellent support group. At every appointment he reminds you of the risk and before surgery everyone must take a small test regarding the risk to make sure that you are aware of all the risks. I would rate him an 8 or even a 10.
I found Dr. Tex to be very informative. It was also somewhat comforting to see that other surgeons from around the country come to train with on the Laprascopic procedure. It simply adds to his resume. He is simple and down to earth when it comes to explaining issues to you. He keeps all that medical jargon out of the conversations.
Dr. Tex is a very busy surgeon, I've had follow up appointments cancelled on a number of occasions and then the rescheduling was even further out. Also be prepared to wait well past your scheduled appoint time. As I said he is very busy. That aside, he is pleasant and informative. His staff is equally pleasant but I think also overworked.
My surgery went without a hitch. I've had no post op complications.
His support group was very informal, but the forum to get most of the information you need and to learn of other peoples experiences thus providing you with the basis to prepare yourself for surgery and your after care. The group was very overcrowded, but the nutritionist worked very hard to resolve that problem. Also, nutritional handouts were always available. Questions were also handled by phone or email promptly.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Tex and his staff an A+ and I highly recommend him.
First impression was okay. The first meeting was quick, because I had done a lot of research and did not have a lot of questions. I like Dr. Teixeira he is an excellent surgeon. The hospital sucks. I knew what I was suppossed to do, like get out of bed and move, yet all the teaching doctors kept saying wait not yet tommorow. Then Dr. Teixeira would come in and be like why aren't you doing this or that. I was beyond congested and very emotional so I was not explaining myself at the time. The stay in the hospital was the worst I have ever experienced. Thank god my husband was with me, because he took care of my every need, NOT THE HOSPITAL, and he also assisted the women in the next bed. It was crazy. After care absolutly sucked, and I admit I never wanted to return to the Bronx after my surgery. I had major issues like panic attacks from even the thought of returning. So I did NOT want to even return for check up appointments. I did go for an initial check up appointment that was a complete waste of time and did not want to return. The doctor was not willing to refer me to someone else in my area. I traveled 4 1/2 hrs to the Bronx for the surgery and appointments, so with all the problems I did not want to return. So inconclusion Dr. Teixeira is a great surgeon and the program sucks. Others have had very different experiences than me and I don't know why. I would suggest NOT traveling long distances to have surgery, because traveling after surgery is NOT something you want to do. The best of luck and if you have any questions please let me know. Also I have basically done my own follow up care with blood work and such through my PCP. I weighed 364lbs two months before surgery (surgery date October 31st, 2002) and now weigh 212lbs May, 2004.
my very was impression was, "this was is who"?" he confused me when he entered the room and continued to explain the 2 different techniques being used. I had to say excuse me, "who are you"? he said I am Dr. Teixeira in a very low, sweet tone. Then we all laughed and he continued his speech.
He is a very sweet, smart and knows and understands all the issues we are going thru.
Dr. Tex strongly emphasizes after care. all the right amount of liquids, vitamins, shakes, etc.
I need a couple of more weeks with Dr. Tex and i will feel more confortable in answering all of these questions. Right now i feel i need more time to know Dr.Tex.
Well I had done some research on surgeons and actually ended up gettig Dr Teiceira by 'accident', that was the best day :)
When I met him, he reminded me of my uncle actually, and that made me feel comfortable to open up and talk to him about my concerns and issues. I liked the way his office and appointments are set up (except its hard to get an appointment soon) My first appointment was an informational appointment, done in a group setting. This to me was easier, this way everyone was asking questions and you could get answers to the things you might have forgotten to ask. Also it shows how comfortable your surgeon is with answering questions. Dr Teixeria DOES NOT AVOID ANYTHING! I have encountered this with other surgeons, and to be frank, its annoying. Its great to be able to hear not just the good, but the bad too. The best thing is how he gives you options and choices. You may be set in your ways about one surgery, and then he makes you listen to all the pros/cons of each surgery and then individually sits with you to make the best choice for you! This is based on your needs, not what he likes to do or feels is the best. He is not only open and easy going, but he is caring and funny! I went to both my own and my sisters informational meeting and it was great! It wasnt repetitive or boring, but packed full of good information (and sometimes its good to hear some things twice). On to the office staff....I LOVE THEM...all of them! From the nutritionists (Ashley and Alison), to the Secretaries (Sean!) and the Billing woman (Betty) to the nurses (Aja) and Residents in training. You end up really getting to know the staff by your second appointment. It was really amazing to feel so secure and open with these people. Even when I call up with questions, they are always happy to talk and answer each and every question in detail. If you happen to be around and have a question, they will even come out and talk to you (thanks Betty!). My least favorite thing...would be (like my sister) the wait..but guess what? Sean CALLED!!! and THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE! My surgery is being moved up to May 26th and my sister is two days before me (thats what I get for not being home to take the call lol). The staff and doctor knew that I really wanted to get this surgery done before I turned twenty one, and they have pushed to make it happen. My original appointment was set for October of 03, it is now May of 04 and I am going to have surgery this month :)Future patients should know that trust is most important, even if Dr. Tex isn't the doctor for you, be sure to trust whomever you choose. Also only trust doctors who are willing to give you the risks/failure rates as well as the good stuff :) ...Aftercare is essential and the Staff seems to have a great program going...also what I really loved about Dr. Tex. is that he does not mind if you want to go see someone else, to compare surgeons. He also did not mind that I went to support groups that another surgeon held (do to scheduling). So far I am totally happy with the care I am receiving from the staff and the doctor. They handle the insurance company, they give you all the information you want and need, and they offer you help and support. What more could you want? Its like having someone in your corner all the time.
A good doctor has a mix of surgical competence, bedside manner, personality, success, and compassion.
I have found that other doctors...arent so good with one or more of these fundamentals, and care more about 'cutting you open' then your health care and needs.
I feel very confident of Dr. Teixeira! He is funny, honest and very knowledgeable. I highly reccommend him. Even my younger sister is having surgery done by Dr. Teixeira.
His staff is very helpful, and are always eager to help, I especially LOVE my nutritionist, Aisling! She has answered so many of my questions she must truly be exhausted of me! :)
He explained all the pros and cons of the surgery, covered complications and diet and other lifestyle changes neccessary for successful WLS.
I like his attitude with regard to WLS. He insists upon all his patients making an informed decision about wheather or not to have WLS. He empowers his patients by making them all schedule their own tests, so that you are the one ultimately who decides when you are ready for surgery. He also requires you to go to at least two support group meetings, which I felt truly helpful. He also requires after surgery support group meetings, which I had every intention of going to anyways!
The thing I like least is that the waiting period before my surgery is SO LONG! (Yes, I know that there is a reason for everything, but I am starting to feel anxious to get started on this exciting journey! And Yes, I know that Dr. Texeira is a responsible, well regarded surgeon and he is EXTREMELY BUSY for that very reason!) I completed all of my tests now, and I am just waiting for my countdown to begin...Even though I will have to wait until August to start!
I will probably have more to add to this 'novel' as my surgery date gets closer, and after the surgery of course! :) Get out those reading glasses huh? :)
Dr. Teixiera is awesome. He is sensitive and speaks to his patients like a friend. His staff is well trained and respect him greatly.
I think that anyone in my area that is thinking about the surgery should use him.
The aftercare is excellent, the nutritionist is also excellent.
His surgical competence and bedside manner can't be beat!!
Dr.Teixeira comes across as a very caring and considerate surgeon. My first visit to
his office he answered all my questions and
when over the surgery with the risks and
benefits included.
His office staff is also very good. The
hospital has a structured aftercare program
which includes bi-weekly support group which
I find very helpful.
Dr.Tex as I call him was very supportive
and encouraging to me when I had some
problems with vomiting in the 1st week.
He is very laid back and easy going and
makes you feel like it's all goind to be O.K.
