First off, Dr Touliatos is now in Birmingham, AL. He is a wonderful and caring physician. For a surgeon he is very warm and friendly. I met some that have "God complex" written all over them. Dr T. is very informative and his staff is very willing to help. I am just 6 weeks post op and Dr T. is very much involved with my diet and progress. I guess I need to say that he uses a team approach with his patients and the patient is a very key member of the team. I was a very high risk for surgery and Dr T. together with myself and other key physicians planned how we would proceed and treat me post op.
I would recommend Dr.Touliatos to anyone, he is competent, caring and has a wonderful bedside manner.
This is my opinion and I had a very good experience. I know others may have different views, but mine have all been positive with Dr. T and his staff at Baptist Montclair.

First of all:
His office location has changed.
He is at Baptist Montclair in Birmingham, AL.

I first met him when my husband began the process when John touliatos was located in Arab, AL. My first impression of John Touliatos was how kind he was. He made me feel welcome and at ease. The office staff was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Due to my first impressions and prior experiences with him, I followed his practice to Birmingham. The new office seems smaller, but the staff is just as nice. I would highly recommend him for this proceedure. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both great. He has a mild mannered, concerned persona that endears him to you and immediately creates a feeling of trust. He did a Lap RNY on my husband, myself and an immergency intestinal surgery on my thin mother that just had an obstruction due to hysterectemy scar tissue. I was pleased in ALL circumstances.

When I went in he asked if I had any questions for him. I lost my brian when I got there, but luckily I had written my questions down. By the time my appointment had come around, I had done so much research that I really didn't have that me questions. He drew me a picture of how he would to my take down (5'). My primary physician referred me to his partner, who has only done 8 RNY's, and Dr Touliatos has just moved from Arab to BMC-Montclair and has done 40-50. The do have aftercare program and support group. Kind of quiet, have question ready. He is very thorough with pre-op testing. I have to see Nutritionist, Physical Therapist, Cardiologist and Physcologist.
I work in Medical profession, to I feel that surgical compentence is more important, but he is nice to have both.

I met Dr. T aat a WLS meeting in Boaz. I liked him, but he was a little withdrawn. I am very open and friendly so this was a little disturbing for me. I want a Dr. that I can talk to and not feel like I am "bothering him". I got an appointment fairly fast. He said I was a good canidate. My insurance approved on the first try, although they refuse to pay for complications. I guess I'll fight that battle when it gets here. (Hopefully, I'll never have to worry about it.) I had an EGD on Feb 02. He found the H-py-lori bacteria. I had to take the 14 day pack of antibiotics. I was told the list was very long for surgery. I was put on the "list" after the EGD. Amy, Dr. T's nurse, said it would take about 6 mos. to get to the top of the "list". April 5th I got a call from Amy asking if I wanted to have the surgery on the 11th. Only a week away!! I said "Yes" but I was battling Bronchitis. I had to cancel because of Bronchitis, Sinus infection and a bad UTI. Pooh!!!
Back on the "list". I called Amy on the 22nd to find out how long I would have to wait now. She said Dr. T was moving to B'ham in June and he was going to try to do the employees of the hospital before he left since their insurance was only good at that hospital. Double Pooh!!! They tried to get me to wait on Dr. Groves. He is Dr. T's assistant now. He will be approved to do the surgery in July. I hate to start over on everything. I called Amy back to say I would try to wait on Dr. T. She said he was going to try to do all the patients he had approved before he left for B'ham. Yeah!! It is now May 7th. I spoke with Amy today. She says that Dr. T has given her some surgery dates and she would get back to me as soon as she got everyone scheduled. Dr. T is going to stay till Aug so he can take care of his patients. Yes!!
