Surgery April 13, 05.
Have long term history of overweight. Would never have considered this procedure except for the experience of my wife, Mary Ann Guthrie (This group) Impressed with his demenor and staff from day one. very helpful and non judgemental (servant's heart) I have problems being at ease with him, but it's on my side, not his.

At Surgery + 18 days hit first big speed bump. Severe back pain and blood in stool. First thought to be possible acid reflux problem. 4 day hospital visit - Cat Scan - upper and lower GI testing. 2 units of blood product. No one told me this was an easy method of weight loss, don't kid yourself.

Back on track, will update as events unfold. never under estimate the support groups and others who have gone before. no need to reinvent the wheel.

Feel I have a new chance at life. Energy level through the roof. Other health problems - Diabetic issues, foot issues, and CPAP much better.

no real second thoughts on surgery to date

My first impression was Man! He's tall...and young! I was nervous because he seemed so young. I quickly found him to be professional, and I could not ask for a better surgeon.

The staff is incredible. I had to go on COBRA and they worked with it well. I got scared and I KNOW they had to get tired of my phone calls, but they never complained.

I was impressed by the way he explained the surgery, answered my questions, and when we prayed on the day of surgery.

Aftercare is emphasized. 2 visits every 2 weeks, then visits every 3 months.

He explained that this is a major surgery, and that there were risks involved. He explained the statistics and asked me if I wanted to go ahead.

On a scale from one to ten, I would rate him an eleven.

Surgical competence and bedside manner were both great. As soon as I was done in surgery he went and talked with my wife and gave he all of the information she wanted.

Very nice, well dressed man. My impression never changed. Office staff have been wonderful. I can't say that I didn't not like anything about Dr. Touliatos. He is a wonderful DR. Can not ask for any better. Dr. Touliatos said a prayer with me before going into surgery, which won my heart and made me feel so much better about the surgery. I got to see him only 2 more times before he had to go out of country to teach the surgery, but I get to see him this December for my 2 year check up. Yes he sees his patients at 6weeks, 12 weeks, 1 year and then yearly I think. He tells you like it is. I would rate him a 10 overall. Can't ask for any better. Everything is great about him.Blue

Dr Touliatos practices in B'ham, not Arab, Ala. I had my surgery 5/30/03, and saw him for my 3-wk visit. That was his last day in B'ham for 1yr--he had a teaching fellowship in Kansas City. I am waiting till July to see him again--a little past 1year for my 1yr follow-up, but it was my choice to wait to see him, instead of seeing ano dr in the practice. The other doctors have been great, but I want my follow-up visits with my surgeon. Dr.T is very caring, very patient. I had LOTs of questions each time I saw him & he always took time to answer/explain. His staff was helpful in scheduling all pre-tests, and providing any info I needed. DrT. prays with all his patients before the surgery, and I appreciated this. His practice has a support group that meets once a month at the hospital, and they encourage attendance. I highly recommend Dr Touliatos to anyone having this surgery. He is an extremely competent surgeon, and a good person as well.

At the time, he worked at the same hospital I did. He has since relocated. Good first impression, I was the second WLS at the hospital he performed. His office staff was wonderful, always answered my questions.

Not enough information about aftercare. That was one of the suggestions I made to the hospital. It needed a support group since there wasn't one in the area. They are working on it at this time.

Dr. John Touliatos is now at Baptist Medical Center - Montclair in Birmingham, AL. He is a very conscientious doctor. I feel very confident in his abilities as a surgeon. He does not enter into weight loss surgery without thorough examination of his patient. His office staff have been very friendly and helpful with great response times to any questions I have had and in scheduling all my screenings and my surgery.

Dr. Touliatos make sure that his patients are educated in all areas of post-op care. He requires a physical therapy evaluation and a nutrition class. He also makes sure you understand the risks associated with this surgery before you make a firm decision.

Dr. Touliatos seems to be a great doctor. I feel very comfortable putting my life in his hands. I look forward to working with him in the future as my body is transformed. Thanks, Dr. Touliatos!

UPDATE: WOW! What a great experience! I do not believe I could have found a better surgeon. Dr. Touliatos is a very caring, compassionate doctor witha great bedside manner and a great sense of humor. He has a great personality. He is one of those doctors who actually spends time with his patients. He took the time to answer all fo my questions and prayed with me before my surgery. He never seemed to be in a hurry to go, even though I know how busy he is with his practice. He is a rare find! In my limited dealings with the others members of his group, they are great too!

Thank you, Dr. Touliatos!

Well let me sign up to be the one woman campaign for Dr. Touliatos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I had originally got my surgery approved with a different Dr. in MS but because where I work I have the chance to speak with lots of Dr.'s and plenty of RN's not to mention patients! On a daily basis so everytime I would talk to one of the RN's at Montclair that had some dealings with him I'd always ask about his "bedside manners".Along with other Dr.s throughout the state that perform the surgery.I kept like a score card by my desk with all of their names and little tidbits and I can tell you after doing this for 4 months and 9 days.I changed my mind on going to MS because I knew I'd be just fine here with Dr.Touliatos.Yeah, I know I haven't had the surgery yet but I spoke to him several times on the phone he not knowing me from adam and asked plenty of questions of him and he never once hesitated to answer even if it was a "silly" question 11 at night.I talk to all kinds of Dr's everyday and wonder sometimes how they keep patients but this Doc is a sweetie! And his staff is absolutely awesome..Lindsey and Margaret especially. The Dr. and the staff are very thorough with answering questions and addressing concerns and making sure you understand any and all instructions.

He is personable, young yet knowledgable,
thorough..and does what he says he will.
I knew his surgical skills were superb as I had spoken with the R.N. Surgical Supervisor at the O.R. where he operated. He also performed the surgery on a Nurse Practioner I know. He just got rave reviews from these two (which alone was enough for me) as well as Superb comments from other Dr.'s I know.
My impression hasn't changed. I have actually only met him and had my abdominal physical, EKG, CXR all on the day of my consultation.
His office staff is excellent. They are all about helping you. They are busy, but; they have done all I have asked for ...on a timely basis.
I don't know him well enough to have a least favorite thing about him. He was kind, courteous, informative, knowledgable and willing to address any and all questions I had and may have in the future.
He does emphasize this is a lifelong comittment. He lets you know the follow up schedule and lets you know what he expects from you.
He basically let me tell him what I know about the surgery and then explained exactly what he would be doing, the possibilities of complications and the risks associated with this surgery. He let me know he would do his best and I would be watched and checked after surgery and prior to discharge. He is not misleading in any aspect.
Scale of 1-10. He's a 9. I reserve the right to add or subtract after my surgery.
I know from reviews this man knows what he is doing. He is also very pleasant. He is not as talkative as I am..(don't know anyone who is). Surgical competence and bedside manner are equally important. As I said I have only had consultation with him one time, I do reserve the right to inform any and everyone of any changes in my opinion.
