John D. Nye Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

I decided on Dr. Nye after thoroughly checking him out. I was told repeatedly that his bedside manner was not great but that as a surgeon he was wonderful. However, I found him to be extremely pleasant and seems to know his stuff (I'll let you know about that after Sept 12). His staff is wonderful, handled all of my paperwork for me, and helped with some of the preop blood work as I am 2 1/2 hours away from his office. Overall, I rate Dr. Nye and his staff a 10.

He was a large guy and was really to the point. It was a very imformative visit. His wife was the nurse, and she was great. It took two wks for them to send my letter to tricare, which upset me a little. However, tricare approved me in 1 day so no problem here. I think I'm gonna be very happy with Dr. Nye. My preop is Sept. 4th and surgery is scheduled for Sept. 9th. Im very excited!

I thought Dr. Nye was a very busy but caring dr. His office staff are very caring and efficient-most of the time.
On my first visit, I felt very comfortable about asking any questions, and he was very thorough in asking me and my husband how we felt about everything and about any questions we might have. Whatever questions the dr. may not have asked or answered for us his staff was willing and able to do so.
On the visit before my surgery, I came out of Dr. Nye's office feeling very knowlegeable about what was happening. I had to remember though, that anything I felt he may have not told me about,or I felt comfortable about, just to ask him because he will take the time to answer all questions.
He does address the risks of surgery and emphasizes the importance of following his aftercare program.
Overall, I am very happy with Dr.Nye. He has been very thorough in his after-care, and has seen me a lot more than he normally would have because of just a few complications.

He seems to be very nice. Answered all of mine and my husband's questions. His staff is very helpful. He said he has done about 500 of these surgeries. I feel very good about letting him operate on me.
I understand he has a very strict aftercare diet plan and appointment schedule.
I believe surgical competence is most important but a good bedside manner can't hurt. If I don't like the doctor because of his attitude, I WILL look somewhere else.

My consult was June 3, and my very first impression of Dr. Nye, was cozy, like a stuffed animal kinda cozy. he made me at ease and compfortable. Ans for the first time ever the doctor did not make me feel like an idiot about my weight and that being over weight was my fault.

On arrival to the office I had to fill out paperwork, was not that much really. Then I was taken back and weighed, height and before picture taken. Then I placed in a room and a nurse came in and asked me all these questions, diet history, medical problems related to my obesity, things like that. Then we waited for Dr. Nye.

He came in and asked some breif questions. Asked my husband some questions and then he explained in detail what the procedure was, the recovery and then that was about it.

My biggest fear before going to his office was being told I could not have this surgery. Not only was that not an issue but hemade me very at ease about my surgery and I am very very comfortable with him as my surgeon. His reputation stood true!

Surgery scheduled for August 19, 2002

I was very impressed with Dr. Nye. He was kind, and upfront with any complications. His staff is very nice. It took a while to get an appointment, but its well worth the wait. Dr. Nye told me he has been doing these surgeries since 1978.

Very professional, not overly friendly. The office staff is great. Very friendly and helpful. The Dr. is very informative and thorough and addresses the risks of surgery up front and openly.I would rate him very high on his ability to comunicate well and to listen to concerns. I feel very confident in his ability to perform the surgery.
06-26-02 I had my last pre-op appt. with Dr.Nye today. He seemed to be in a much better frame of mind today. He seemed very relaxed and we even joked around a little bit. I went in with a bit of anxiety about my upcoming surgery but when I left his office I felt completely relaxed and at peace with my decision to have this surgery. He completely put me at ease and at the same time was concerned about my concerns. He was patient and took his time and answered my questions. All this and he was backed up on his schedule today. His waiting room did not have enough chairs for everyone to sit. I was definately impressed.

My first impression of Dr. Nye was good, I felt comfortable discussing my situation with him and the staff. They are all wonderful. He answers all the questions that you have. BIG on after care. He put me at ease about the entire process. I called the office several times with quesitons about different things and was always treated with respect.

Have an appointment scheduled for April 24, 2002. His receptionist was friendly, polite, and knowledgeable. Will report more after appt.!I called for my appointment in mid January and this was the first available appointment.
UPDATE- My appointment went very well! Everyone in Dr. Nye's office, including Dr. Nye were very compassioante and supportive. I left feeling as if this giant oppressive weight had been lifted from my shoulders. They all were more than willing to work with me because of my time constraints and the distance I have to travel. I am so happy I chose to go out of town, Dr. Nye has been doing weight loss surgeries since 1979! He was upfront about the risks, the outcomes to expect, and about his experiences. I left feeling even more ready and excited to stop this obesity turmoil with weight loss surgery. Thanks Dr. nye, thanks all of you!

I thought he was a rather large fellow. Gentle enough. Still think he is large and gentle. His office staff was very busy, but to the point and pleasant. I asked to be put on a cancellation list and called once a week to see if they have any cancellations. I started out with a May the 5th and I went today 3/29. Dr. does have a aftercare program. Risks of the surgery were adressed by the nurse and Dr. Overall, I can't rate him yet because he hasn't cut on me before but I'll let you know! Surgical competence is far better than a good bedside manner as long as the Dr. is a good commuticator.
