I felt very comfortable with Dr. Nye and his office staff, they were all very friendly and helpful. He is very big on after care...he stresses the need to follow his routine he has mapped out after your surgery.
He was straight forward and upfront about the risk, he didn't sugar coat anything. I think Dr. Nye is a very competant M.D. and I having worked in the medical field for 16 yrs. feel that surgical competence out weighs bed side manor, however I think Dr. Nye has both.
Hello, I havent yet had my first appt with the doctor but am scheduled too soon. I cant wait! I am nervous but excited.
JANUARY 13, 2002...UPDATE... WEnt and met the doctor today. He was very upfront and honest with is anwsers. I didnt get to talk to him more then 5 minuts cause he got a page and had to go to an emergency. But in the time that I did have with him he was great. I would recommend him to anyone! He and his staff were very nice.
I just got home from my consult with Dr. Nye and his staff. All of them are wonderful people and I felt secure and at home from the very second I walked in. I had already researched what a BRILLIANT surgeon he is so his knowledge on wls didn't surprise me. Everything was addressed at our meeting and I didn't feel rushed one bit. I am glad I chose him as my surgeon (and he chose me as his patient..lol) and I am anxiously awaiting a swift surgery date. I would rate him and his staff a "10".
My first impression of Dr. Nye was good. I feel he does really care about his patients. I saw him everyday while in the hospital even though it was the weekend. He listen to may concerns. When it came time to leave I was a little uncomfortable about leaving and I told him this, but after removal of the tubes and changing my pain medicine to what I would be using at home I felt more comfortable and I was able to leave that afternoon. He would have let me stay another day if I wanted to. He has done over 650 of these surgery in the past 20 years with only 4 deaths. Knowing this made me feel very comfortable with him doing this surgery. His staff is super nice, not one problem. They help me with all my questions.
First of all I'd like to thank everyone associated with this site because this is how I found Dr. Nye. I emailed every patient who posted a comment about him and got responses from approx 60% of the inquiries sent out. Encouraging positive responses about Dr. Nye and his head nurse/wife Rose. They were very caring and compassionate. I had seen another doctor and I had done hundreds of hours of research about all the procedures and checked http://www.spotlighthealth.com.
Oct 23rd, I met w/Dr. Nye & Rose for the first time. I was very impressed by their caring attitude & total attention to learning about me & how they can best help me. My doctors had already sent copies of my files and blood tests & upper GI test. I had my 3 week food journal completed and I even took very disgusting pictures of a rash I've been fighting and a semi-naked picture showing my tummy... I figured anything that really convinced the insurance company that I am serious about this and need to have this surgery... why not. I can cover alot in clothes but naked.. wow... ewwwwwwwww. I also had my letter written to the insurance company and Rose said she would also write her letter to send along with mine to the insurance company asking for approval. It must've worked! Rose sent my paperwork off Oct 29th and BC/BS of AL said they processed the paperwork Nov 6th and I called this morning (Nov 14th) and was told I was APPROVED....
Next appt with Dr. Nye - Dec 9th and then surgery Dec 11th... I'm ready to begin my new life in a smaller body... :)
Dr. Nye was very personable, kind and presented himself in the best manner. He was knowledgeable and explained everything in terms that we as layman could understand. His office staff is kind and upfront. Very encouraging and honest.
After the surgery Dr. Nye and his staff were kind, but I always felt rushed. Most questions were answered with, "That is normal." I don't care if it is normal, I want to know what is causing and discomfort or problems, how long they will last and how do we get rid of them. I think since Dr. Nye is the only surgeon in the area to perform gastric bypass he is swamped and I liked him well enough, but felt that I was just another one of the herd and it was hard for them to remember details and personal information that would have made me all the more comfortable and secure. Overall it was a good experience and they are knowledgable if you ask the right questions and insist on a full answer.
My first impressions of Dr. Nye was good. He was very easy to talk to and he seems to have a sense of humour. His nurse is also his wife Rosa and she made things seem comfortable and I was really relaxed with the two of them. The office staff is great. They do all the paper work. I can't say there was nothing I didn't like about Dr. Nye and his staff. He makes sure that he goes over the procedure and gives you time to ask any questions. He makes sure you understand that you have to follow the program to make this procedure work. From other people I talk to his aftercare is great. He did explain the risk of surgery and he was up front with me about anything risk that I asked him. I would rate him and his staff a 10.
October 29, 2002 - Dr. Nye and Rose (his wife) are the greatest. If I have any questions they never have a problem giving me the answers. We always have a good time picking on Dr. Nye and making him laugh. He is just a really down to earth kind of man. I would recommend him to anybody. He is the best in my book.
I haven't met with Dr. Nye yet but his staff has been wonderful on the phone and setting me up with an appt. I'll update more when I see him on Sept. 20.
9-25-02 I met with Dr. Nye today and he is wonderful! He was very thorough, and took the time to draw me a real to life diagram, on the exam table paper(ha)of the procedure he is going to do and what effects it will have on me now and in the future. He asked if I had questions and he answered every one of them.
His staff is also great. They were extremely friendly and helpful in getting me scheduled promptly.
He has a strict aftercare program. You have to go see him once every month for the first year and is big on the support group.
I think it is best to be very prepared when you go in, ask lots of questions. Have a diet history with you too and your psych. eval done already. that will help speed things up for you.
My first impression of Dr. Nye was that he is very professional and knowedgeable about WLS.He was very straightforward with his answers to my questions and concerns. I liked that. He seems to be kind and seems to really care about my overall health.
Dr. Nye's staff are fantastic, they are very courteous and seem to enjoy the work that they do. The office is very busy but I felt like they took the time to make sure I got everything that I needed and they were very prompt about setting up my insurance, pre-op appts. etc.
What did I like the least? I can't think of anything right now but I'll try to get back to that later.
I hear that Dr. Nye really emphasizes after care and I would rate him as excellent overall.
I have finally met Dr. Nye. He is truly a wonderful doctor and I'm glad I chose him. I went to my consult Aug. 6th. He didn't tell me NO, exactly, but he did want to to change my drinking habit (get off the sugars!). He was right. He said to come back in 4 weeks and if I have laid off the sugar drinks, then he'll give me the "OK". I was sooooo upset that I just started to cry. He gave me a hug and said that it'll be alright in the long run. He told me the risks of this surgery and also that he didn't want to do such a risky thing (especially being young, married and two little boys) just to know I'm going to keep on drinking my sugars (which defeats the whole purpose of having this surgery). His nurse was really nice too. She comforted me after he had left. She said that he wouldn't have told me that if he didn't really mean it. He said that he was talking to me like I was his daughter (and he said he loves his daughter very much). So, I may have to wait another 4 weeks, but at least I know he cares enough. I give him a 10!!!!
I went back to him (as scheduled) on Sept. 5th, 2002. He sat me and my husband down once more and told me what I had to do from there to get prepared for the surgery. He said that I should be able to have my surgery within 3-4 weeks. I'm very excited. I have been going to WLS Support Group @ my local hospital. I've never once heard a bad thing about Dr. Nye. I'm really relieved about that!
