John Baker Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
I have not had my consultation visit yet, so I can not yet tell you about first impressions. I can tell you that I find the process of seeing a Weight Loss Surgeon a little strange in that you don't actually get to visit the doctor until after your insurance approves your surgery.
The office staff seems to be a little more informative the closer I get to my consult visit. So far, they have always been willing to answer my questions. At first though, it seemed like I had to prod them for answers. It gets better the closer you are to your visit.
To me, surgical competence is imperative. Bedside manner is great to have, but is really a subjective matter anyway. I would always take the more competent doctor.
I loved Dr.Baker from the get go..He is funny, warm and very sincere with his patients. He is genuily concered with each and everyone of his patients. If it wasnt for a change of insurance companies I will still be there..He is a saint and I truely think he could walk on water. His office staff is very friendly and concerned also. Dr.Baker stresses aftercare at all visits and even has participated in meetings that our support group has put on. Dr.Baker does not leave anything out when he talkes about risk he goes into detail up to and including death. He is truely a upfront kind of person he wants you to know exactly what you are getting into.I would recommend Dr.Baker to everyone, he is truely a miracle for obese people he is a god send.
I have not yet met Dr. Baker, my initial visit will be 1/11/02 with surgery 1/14/02. Dr. Baker was highly recommended by my personal physician.
My original consult date and surgery date was rescheduled. Surgery will be 1/28/02.
I met with Dr. Baker on 1/18/02 and found him to be a very concerned and caring surgeon. I feel extremely fortunate to have him for my surgeon. He wants his patients to be sure to know that this is a lifetime change and to be fully committed to making that change.
His office staff was very nice.
Dr. Baker was very informative and leaves time open for questions.
Seems to have covered everything.
I believe that sugical competence is No. 1 priority. Good bedside manner helps, but skill is imperative.
I was very impressed with Dr. Baker when I first met him. He seemed very competent and knowledgeable. He was also able to provide a very in depth and accurate description of the exact surgical procedure, lifestyle changes necessary for success, and possible complications. After my surgery I realized he was even more wonderful than I had originally thought. He is the most compassionate surgeon I have ever met (and that is saying a lot since I practiced as a surgical nurse for three years). Dr. Baker's nurse has been there. That really helps a lot to go in and meet a person with the nursing expertise but also with a patients perspective. I cant think of anything that I didn't like about Dr. Baker or his staff. He is very big on after care and you several follow up appointments. Everyone of his patients are provided access to his pager or his nurse post operatively. Overall I would give Dr. Baker A four star rating. I tend to lean toward surgical competence when selecting a MD. Because I am a registered nurse I see the detriment that choosing a less than skilled surgeon can cause. After all it is not good bedside manner that will save your life in a crisis. Of course both a re great. That is what you get with Dr. Baker the total package. You won't like him if you are the type of person who likes to be lied to and have everything sugar coated. However, if you are ready to face your problem head on and make a commitment to change your lifestyle- you will love him as I do. Of the patients that I have met who were dissatisfied with Dr. Baker, it is my opinion that they were not ready to accept their share of responsibility in why they are obese and are not ready to accept their responsibility to change. I consider myself an expert at this point on the subject and my stats can prove it. From 240 pounds, size 24. To 115 pounds and size 3-5 (with no major complications what so ever). I am over one year out from surgery and I have only thrown up one time, do not have any "dumping syndrome episodes," nor are my labs out of whack and I am certainly not sickly. As a matter of a fact this past October I participated in an adventure with a team of three other women where we ran 5K, mountain biked 5K, and kyaked 2K and we placed thrid (I didn't miss a lick). It may sound too good to be true but believe me it is. I believe it is all about attitude and determination. I refuse to accept anything less than success.
Surgeon:Aug. 2001 - Have not seen Dr. Baker Yet officially. I did get to meet him briefly at a "maintenance" seminar he held recently at Barnes & Noble. (July 2001)
It was my impression that he seemed kind, caring, attentive to detail and expects compliance from his patients. So far I am satisfied with Dr. Baker. Consultation is Aug. 30 at 8:30 AM.
08-30-01 Met with Dr Baker for consultation. He is very thorough and really takes an interest in me as a person. I have heard horror stories about him and in my case, they are simply not true.

Staff: Feb 2001: - Office staff quickly emailed me forms to complete and tests to have done before my initial consultation.
Staff is very congenial on the phone and makes you feel at ease.
Updated Aug 29, 2001 - Staff called to inform me that my paperwork was not in order and that they needed a letter from my PCP stating that I had been under care for weight loss for at least two years. This letter was actually FAXED to them on or around June 1, 2001. They misplaced it.... AGAIN!
I recommend to anyone that they get personal copies of ALL correspondence with their PCP and surgeon so that last minute oversights can be avoided.
I was also told about a $235.00 PRE-PAYMENT to the surgeons office today. I dont have that kind of money on such short notice. I was able to arrange that payment be made in a few days. BE AWARE!! You may have to make some sort of payment up front. ASK! ASK! and ASK again!!!

*NOTE* This is just my experience with Dr.'s staff. I know they are busy people and have lots of patients to deal with, but you would think that they would have a better way of dealing with incoming paperwork.

St Vincents Hospital After Baptist had problems with my bed being broken, I was switched to St. Vincent's. I would have received good care at either facility, but in my opinion, I got EXCELLENT care at St. Vincents. The Nursing staff is top notch and the aides were also well versed in caring for a bariatric patient. Thanks to everyone at St. Vincents.
Hi Iola!!(The Best Nurse next to Sandy!)
