Dr.Mun is extremely nice to speak with. He listens intently to any concerns or issues you may have in regards to your surgery. He explains in detail the various options you have as a patient and what he would suggest your best outcome would be. He makes sure you have started your supplements and have met with the nutritionist to fully understand your postoperative program. We talked about the risks involved and he explained them in detail. I felt fully aware of what would happen before, during and after surgery. His bedside manner and from what I understand from many of the surgeons I work with that he is a wonderful, talented and extremely competent surgeon. I feel very blessed to be having him as my surgeon.

Because I had post-op complications (wound infection), I spent an additional week in the hospital, followed by weekly visits to Dr. Mun.

He was absolutely terrific. He was patient, sympathetic, smart, and very concerned about my well-being. It was obvious to me that he had the respect of the other doctors and the nurses at BI.

Dr. Mun is moving to Faulkner Hospital, and I plan to continue my care with him. I wouldn't consider seeing anyone else.

My first impression of Dr Mun was that he was a very nice down to earth man. I felt very comfortable around him. As I got to know him up to and after surgery, I felt even more comfortable. He came to see me every day I was in the hospital and was great.
The office staff is fantastic. I love them all, very nice caring people.
If you're thinking about having the surgery at BI the only choice is Dr Mun.
Overall I would rate him an 11 on a scale of 1-10. Thank you Dr. Mun.

Dr. Mun was very pleasant, and informative. He went over both surgeries to make sure that I was confident with my decision for Lap band surgery.
He had me meet with a second surgeon to go over the surgery to talk of the benefits of both again.
The program is very thorough in making sure that all aspects of your care are met. I haven't had surgery yet but am pleased with all the assistance I have received from everyone.
the one thing that did stand out is the surgeons are definately more confident of the results of the bypass versus Lap Band.

I had read posts that Dr. Mun had a bad bedside manner, but I didn't find that at all. I thought he was professional and not off-putting at all.

Same--I kept expecting his 'bad' bedside manner to show up, but it didn't.

Some staff is good, particularly screening staff. His personal assistant is a little prickly.

Aftercare is really emphasized--it's one of the reasons I chose this program.

There is a very structured aftercare program.

Risks were well addressed on the website, in group meetings (required as part of the process), in one on one screening appointments and in the final appointment w/ Dr. Mun.

In my opinion, surgical competence trumps all.

He seemed very humble, and kind and he smiled at me alot. Very much tried to put me at ease. My impression of him only got better over time. The day of the surgery I was so frightend that I was sobbing. He and the rest of the staff did all they could do to put me at ease. The last time that I'd had surgery was when I was 3 and had my tonsils out, so I was understandably very nervous. His office staff is GREAT! They are very knowlegeable and kind. I have heard very good things about Dr. Mun and the whold bariatric team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Cenetre, and I have to say that everyone lived up to the things that I have heard. The only thing that I didn't really like is that I felt a tiny bit rushed at my pre op a couple of weeks before my surgery, but I attribute that to the fact that there were others waiting to see the doctor. Also, I only got to see Dr. Mun once after my surgery was finished. This didn't really bother me that much, because there was always a well qualified nurse there that was more than willing to deal with anything. Also, I had the feeling that if a major problem had arisen, the doctor would be available to see me. Aftercare is very much a part of the whole experience there. My next appointment was 2 weeks after my surgery, and I am to see the doctor every 8 weeks or so after that. They make you go to at least 2 meetings before surgery so that you are well aware of all of the risks and side effects of the surgery. I think that this is vital, because you are better able to make an educated decision about the different surgical procedures. Overall on a scale of 1-10, I give Dr. Mun and the rest of the staff at Beth Israel Deaconess an 11! He is really a wonderful person and surgeon.

Dr. Mun is a very reputable surgeon. He is very soft spoken but extremely knowledgeable. He made me feel totally comfortable at each preop appointment and at time of the surgery. He makes you feel like a person not a number. Dr. Mun's theory is " I am giving you a jump start on life now you have to roll with it" Which is totally the truth. He stresses the importance of aftercare and follow up visits. He explained fully the risks and complications associated with the surgery. He is very cautious. I was origionally scheduled for surgery 5 weeks ago, when I arrived at the hospital iwas running a low grade fever and my heart rate was elevated. After waiting about 2 hours to see if this subsided. Dr. Mun made the decision to postpone surgery. He did not want to take ant risks on an elected procedure. I definitely feel he made the right judgement call! I feel that all around Dr. Mun is an excellent surgeon and would highly reccommend him!!!!!!

My first impression was that he was very serious about his work and difficult to get any sense of his personality.
My impression has not changed except I'll add that he has a subtle way of showing he cares, but I have no doubt he does.
His staff is unbelievable. Everyone is very nice and informative.
If you're okay with an impersonal doctor, but extremely knowledgeable and competent, he's the guy. He's a no-nonsense guy and will give it to you straight.
He really emphasizes after care. He doesn't want anyone to go through with the surgery unless you are serious. He is very firm about following his guidelines he's set up. He addresses the risks more than the benefits. The benefits are obvious, so the risks are what need to be discussed. He makes sure you know exactly what you're getting into so you can make an informed decision.
I would rate him as 10 for competence and a 7 for bedside manner. He's not rude or anything, he's just very serious. Either that or I don't get his humor. For example: My surgery was on a Friday just before noon. I was up walking the halls at 4am the next morning. When he came in to see me later that morning, he asked my why I wasn't up the day I was operated on....I thought I was doing pretty good and so did the nurses.
I think his competence is the most important.

Dr. Mun is a man of great skill, tremendous compassion, and integrity. He is conservative in his approach to this weight loss surgery tool - and that is a very good thing.

Dr. Mun is supported by a helpful and professional (friendly too) staff. The level of activity within the program is high and all staff members do their very best to respond to patient inquiries in the shortest amount of time. My advice is to remember that your urgency is not someone else's emergency.

Dr. Mun is focused on aftercare - not only during the two years that you are followed in the program - but lifelong - this change to your body is forever and he advocates that your care should be as well - he works with you and your PCP to transition the care to the PCP.

Dr. Mun is open and honest about the risks of surgery and what is required of the patient for successful implementation of this tool. (Those who have a WLS and then continue to eat like crap and not incorporate exercise into thier lives should not wonder why it is not working!!!)

He's a very serious guy but I got him to smile.
His staff & the whole program at BIDMC is very good & supportive. That's why I went with this group. There are a lot of choices in the city of Boston but I like who I chose.
The patient's love him & know he is looking out for them. He was at the WLS fashion show last sunday 5/16/04 & was presented with a plaque from his patients and he said that seeing so many people happy & healthy was so gratifying for him & his team.
