Edward Mun Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.
Dr. Mun was great. He saved my life as far as I am concerned. HE was very informative and willing to answer any and all of my questions. Fortunately we both work at the same hospital so it made contact easy, even via e-mail.
The clinic is well organized and FULL of support. Patients are required to meet with an MD, a psychiatrist, a nutrtionist and to attend a support group before surgery will be booked. I found this to be every helpful.
Dr. Mun also does not use NG tubes or PEG tubes post-op which I was happy about!!!!
I liked Dr. Mun very much. He definately seems very
skilled and confident in his skills. He is very nice, but
shoots from the hip and tells it like it is, and that's a
good thing. He definately made me feel like he was in this
business to help people with their weight problems, not just
in this to do surgery. That was important to me.
I don't have anything negative to say. I asked him if having
the surgery done LAP was a possibility, and he was very up front
to tell me that he would definately not be comfortable doing LAP on
me because of my size. I respected that very much. I feel much more
comfortable now knowing his view of it.
My first impression of him was that he was soft spoken and serious. After my meeting with him, he is very smart, and very serious but also caring about your health and wanting you to succeed. I had lost 34 pds on my own, which he thought was excellent. He thought i would be an excellent candidate for laproscopic surgery. Which he admits he is not an expert in, onlyhaving done 17 or so. But gave me the information and i decided i would go for that, with the agreement if he had to go to the open he would.
The office staff was nice, office could use a facelift, but its the people who count, and they were friendly. Aftercare, i know they have a schedule of visits for afterwards, I think the big aftercare role will lie in the hands of the nutrionist. The only thing i see lacking is the support group, which they have but i dont feel people get what they need from it. I think alot of postops feel there are too many preops asking questions, they should really have seperate ones and at times bring them together. I feel comfortable with drmun or i wouldnt be there. I think surgical competence is the most important and if he has a bedside manner all the better.
My first inpression of Dr. Mun was not that great. I was a revision patient and felt like he looked down at me for "failing" the first time around. I didnt feel he anwered my question clearly, but after I had the surgery he was great. Ihad a couple of complications and he was very good with my care. His team as well were terrific. I still feel as though he is leary that I will "fail" again this time, but I will prove him wrong! The office staff is great as far as the dietician Linda and the other doctor's go. I have never met his worker Pat, but have spoken with her several times and she is the best! Every office should have a Pat.
The after care is good too. There are also group meetings every thurs that patience can go to. I live almost 2 hours away and the parking is outrageous, so I havent gone yet, but plan to when I can. My overall rating of the staff and Dr. Mun would be a B+ Surgical confidence would be A++++ and bedside manner about a B+ as well.
He is just wonderful....not a typical doctor in a hurry and running around here and there. He takes his time to explain everything regardless of wether you want to hear it or not. My team is compiled of 5 medical professionals. Dr.Mun (pronounced moon) has done 250 surgeries so far. He operates almost every Weds and Fridays trying to do 4 to 6 patients per week.
The only thing I didn't like was the waiting...so long to get everything done
and to finally get the date! It took determination and 5 months. There are meetings at the hospital every Thursday for patients, care givers and anyone else who may want to come. Last month there were over 200 people at the one meeting that Dr. Mun was going to speak at. Aftercare is very defined and fully explained. You WILL change your eating habits for sure...unless you like "dumping". You
will avoid sweets (sugar) and fats. I rate Dr. Mun as an A+ surgeon...I will let you know about him even more after my suregery!
My first impression of Dr. Mun was very favorable. He was very knowlegable and up front about the possible risks and potential benefits. His staff at the Center for the Study of Nutritional Medicine are phenomenal!! The really seem to understand the problems of the obese.
The Center is big on post-op and follow up care. I had an appointment at 2 weeks post op, one month, two month and three months. My next appointment is at six months.
Overall I am extremely happy with the services provided by Dr. Mun. Most importantly, they were so buttoned up at the center that my insurance approval was a snap! I ws very concerned about this, but they did everything! I NEVER once had to communicate with my insurer.
My first impression of Dr. Mun was that he is a caring and respectful person. Since I have only seen him once so far I guess I cannot comment further on him. However, I have seen other doctors for weight control and had never felt comfortable with any until Dr. Mun.
The center for nutrition at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital where Dr. Mun practices is very competent and pleasant. My husband and I went through several months worth of testing and seeing psyciatrists, nutritionists, medical doctors, etc. before we were accepted into the program.
The before and aftercare program made us feel confident that we could do this and make it work. Dr. Mun as well as the other doctors we saw in the program addressed the risks of surgery and explained in detail the entire operation. They also explained the laproscopic bypass and why they do not care to use that on us. The open one is called the Gold Standard and would keep us under for a lesser abount of time. I don't plan to wear any bikinis so it made little difference to me or my husband!
I guess I will be able to tell more after my surgery on January 19th, 2001.
Dr. Mun was very professional. He appeared to be kind and considerate. He knows his stuff. He did not rush you and was informative. He explained things in laymens terms. His manner was very soothing and gentel. I would highly recommend him to anyone thinkins of having the surgery in the Boston area.He requires that you attend aftercare and that you must go to suppot grous prior to surgery. His office manager Pat is lovely. I have never met her only spoken to her over the phone. She has always returned my calls even when they did not need to be returned. She was kind and supportive. I would recommed the clinic for anyone in the MA area.
I like Dr. Mun a lot, and really appreciated how carefully he described the procedure to me and spoke frankly about all the potential problems. He was recommended to me by another person who had RnY surgery a year ago.
Dr. Mun isn't an outgoing person who will pat you on the back and laugh, he is very professional. I like that as it made me feel that he was competent. If you looking for someone who is really affable and outgoing, Dr. Mun is not really like that. Meeting with him made me feel comfortable for different reasons. He didn't rush me in the office and took the time to make sure I was aware of ALL benefits and possible problems with the surgery. If I had one compaint it would be that he didn't call me after the surgery when I got home, another surgeon who helped him who I never heard of did. I would have liked to have spoken with Dr. Mun personally, but I'm sure he would have been available if I called. Overall, I think he was great.
Dr. Mun is an excellent surgeon! He is very serious about this surgery and does not beat around the bush, he told me fact for fact what was going on and what would likely happen if I did not have the surgery. He has been very quick to respond to any of my calls to him that I have made with concerns, and he took the time to explain everything, even over the phone.
