Dr Kam was very professional and informative. I had a lot of confidence in him and would recommend him to anyone!

My first impression of Dr. Kam was that he was very professional. He got straight to the point and answered any questions I had. He created my trust in him right away, and I believe he'll do a good job on me. When I first met him, I was at my consultation visit and met Dr. Kam, and my patient counselor. Both were very friendly and encouraging.

I first met Dr. Kam on May 3 for my initial consultation. He was direct and to the point. I thought he was very professional and took the time to answer my questions about the surgery, particularly my interest in a laproscopic procedure (he hopes to become certified late summer 2004 but I wasn't interested in waiting that long for my surgery). His office staff were friendly and helpful. I know some people don't care for Dr. Kam but I never encountered any situations where I wasn't comfortable with him. I felt more at ease with Dr. Kam because of his trauma surgery experience which let me know that he wouldn't be easily rattled in the event of a complication. I was glad I went with Dr. Kam.

I didn't see Dr. Kam for my first follow-up visit because he was getting married so I met with his partner, Dr. Jeff Gauvin. I can see why some like Dr. Gauvin better because he is more friendly and appears to have friendlier bedside manners. With that said, I was pleased with Dr. Kam and would take him as my surgeon again in a heartbeat.

Sparrow Hospital has a comprehensive, multi-discipline approach to WLS. They require their potential surgical patients to attend 4 classes prior to surgery and hope the patients will attend 4 more weeks of classes after surgery. The classes cover pre- and post-operation expectations, dietary demands, and behavioral needs. Some of it was boring but a lot of it was helpful and I appreciated their effort to inform me of the changes that I could expect from the surgery.

Sparrow Weight Management Center also requires the patient to start a liquid diet 4 weeks prior to surgery. I made it through the program (with some cheating) and lost 20 lbs. before I went under the knife. The lost weight improved recovery and better-prepared for the surgery.
