I am in need of a revision, so I now am seeing Dr. Clifford Deveney in Portland, Oregon. I am excited to work with him towards my ultimate weight loss goals. Dr. Deveney is knowledgable, and has an awesome bedside manner. His staff is awesome and caring also. rnrnMy prevous surgeon was Dr. Kenneth Welker who left his practice shortly after my surgery in 2002. It seems he has begun WLS again in Reedsport, Oregon which is too far for me to travel.rnrnrn
Dr. Deveney is a competent, skilled and experienced surgeon. He answered the questions I posed to him in easy to understand terminology. His staff are the best. The nurse practitioner Vicki and an obesity researcher were splendid. We were laughing so hard my sides hurt. I can't say enough about how knowledgable and friendly they were at the pre-op visit. Don't ask me to rate the phlebotomist though. I warned her that my veins were sneaky and she haughtily didn't heed the warning. After poking both arms we had to go for the hand.
My first impression of Dr Deveney was positive, he is very knowledgable, very smart, and very good at what he does. His office staff is friendly. He is very straight forward and doesn't BS. He answered all my questions and was always friendly to me. My surgery went flawlessly and I'm 2 weeks post op with no problems to speak of.

I have met with Dr Deveney 3 times now and I hope as the old saying goes third times a charm .. He is a nice Dr.. He was alittle busey but willing to take the time to talk with me and answer all my qestions. I am looking forward to seeing him again hopefully the end of this month to get a date, If every thing goes good with Aetna.
I first saw Dr. Deveney at the orientation I attended with about 30 other people. He was very open to questions. Answered a ton of them and I didn't feel like he was holding anything back in his answers. I like him more each time I see him.
His office staff was very warm, friendly, and right on top of request/questions.
OHSU, being a teaching hospital, has interns(or residents?--I don't know the difference)come in and see you and talk with you and get your information, just like a doctor would. Although I wasn't real excited about that (I guess I just wanted to talk to the doctor who did the surgery, I don't know.), I feel they were very thorough and answered my questions. Then the surgeon came in and talked with me and went over all the same info. I am extemely pleased with Dr. Deveney, his staff, the interns/residents, the hospital staff, and the nurses. I was very confident with my decision before the surgery and my post-op has reinforced my confidence.
Knowing about some other aftercare programs that others have adhered to, I would have to say, OHSU does not have a strutured after care program, however, they are more than willing to help. I can call and e-mail the dietician and/or the RN anytime I feel necessary, and they get back to me within 24 hours.
I would recommend this hospital and doctor 100%. If my mom, daughter, brother, best friend, etc., were going to have the surgery, I would encourage them to at least talked to Dr. Deveney.
I am more comfortable knowing the surgical competence is high, but a nice bedside manner is certainly important.
My first impression of my Dr. was that he was very knowledgeable, and friendly.
My impression did not change.
Office staff was helpful, informative, and friendly.
Availability was my least liked trait.
He is competant, and friendly, but make sure to go over all the possible complications in detail before making a decision.
He placed good emphasis on aftercare, but not enough on diet. However, that really is the nutritionists job.
No structured aftercare program that I am aware of. Just a few follow up visits.
I don't feel that the risks were clearly explained beforehand, or the potential complications, but that could have been my fault for not probing.
I rate Clifford Deveny an 8 on a 1-10
Because I am not an expert, but needed a 2nd, open surgery, I will rate bedside manner as the best trait. :)
Seemed very pleasant. He is Chief of General Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University and also a Professor of Surgery. Technically I believe he did a very good job, but given his responsibilities, he didn't have the time to spend with me post-op which I feel would have been very helpful. I only saw his assistants afer my surgery.
He was recommended to me by Dr. Kent Skogerson who was going to do my surgery, but due to politics and greed by my local hospital, could not perform my procedure. So I had to go to Oregon.
All the staff there at OHSU were very friendly and immediately put you at your ease.
For the most part everyone was very professional.
I feel surgical competence is obviously more important than bedside manner, but the latter is definitely something to be considered as well.
